Sure would be nice to have them send push notifications for messages that are read, too.

Super annoying to go from the mac, to the iPhone, to iPad and have the same old messages show up as a badge - and have to open the mail app only to find out I already read them (where they suddenly are 'marked read').

I shouldn't have to open mail to do that. Push notifications should take care of that on all macs/devices.

Seems to me anyone running the iOS team and going through that crap every day like the rest of us would want to fix it.

It's working like what you wish on my devices..!

No one is mentioning Eddy Cue who seems to have a very full plate now - iTunes, iBooks, App Store, iCloud, Maps and Siri.

As far as Ive goes, maybe he wants to branch out and expand what he does? I know Steve's way was find the best person for the job and leave them there, but perhaps Cook prefers to give senior leaders different experiences, rather than saying 'you're an industrial designer so that's all you can ever do'.

Apple Maps implementation approach has a fundamental flaw. If it was just correcting the data one can hope it will get better. It has been 5 months since product announcement and 6 weeks since product launch. No significant breakthrough came out. It will take 1-2 years to make Maps useable and probably 5-10 years to make it at par with Google Maps.

Apple owned the good old maps application. Google only provided data and search engine. It is disingenuous for Apple to claim Google didn't provide Vector Maps & Voice Navigation.

They could have simply switched source to vector Google Maps data and get the voice navigation software from TeleAtlas (TomTom). TeleAtlas was navigation provider for Google Maps prior to Google switched to internal navigation software.

Uh. No. You got it all wrong except for the 5-10 years bit.

Google won't provide map and vector data nor license for turn-by-turn without some major kickbacks. Can't blame them cuz the companies Google licensed from before wouldn't either. It takes major effort to gather that data. And if it wern't for Google's self-driving car research, not only would Android not had built in turn-by-turn, but Google Maps would be behind Yahoo Maps, Mapquest, AND Bing Maps since they all had a head start.

TeleAtlas was not the only map provider to Google. It depended on area. The US was primarily Navteq.

Apple had to do something about Maps. Google had demands. Apple wouldn't budge. Whether or not the ask list was reasonable or not, we'll probably never know. And unless we know, it's dumb to try to pin the blame on either company.

An interesting 2013 is starting by now.
I didn't like Forstall and all the focus just on Ios,
but i know he's a great talent and i know he will
find a good place where to start again maybe with
Android or Win8 mobile ?
So good luck Forstall,an era has ended a new has started
as usual.

Best thing to happen to Apple this year!
Although I disagree with skeumorphism being ugly, I actually like it and it was good design where they didn't take it overboard. Podcasts, calendar and contacts I don't mind, but game centre could've been less... Green and brown.
Jobs was right - Apple's best days really do lie ahead.

Tim Cook should step down and the board should put someone like Forstall in charge. Apple needs a vocal ****** to keep everyone in line and cut out a lot of the ********.

Maps problems are no big deal. Whoever put that ****** black anodized coating on the iphone 5 that scratches off so easily should have written an apology to customers, not Forstall.

Browett being out, yeah, that's expected.

Forstall needs to get a lot more credit than most of you folks are giving him. Yeah, he might have an abrasive personality. He might look a bit creepy sometimes on stage. But the guy's done Apple a lot of good in his time there.

Like all the early OSX UI work.

Heck, he's one of the guys who got iOS to where it is today. Even if you're going to crucify him for Maps, he did bring you iPhone in the first place.

Personally, I'd keep an eye on him. He's smart and bound to do something interesting later.

If the board did that Ive, Mansfield and who knows who else would have left the company in short order. Apple doesn't need an ****** running the company. Especially a Steve Jobs wannabe.

Jon Ive was behind the current MacBook Pro design. He seems like he has a bit more of that "Apple" vision while Forstall might've been out of place. This is good news. Apple was starting to look like it was falling off.

Wow, this is huge news. John Browett didn't last very long at all! And Ive being in charge of the iOS interface can only mean good things- I feel very positive about getting an iPhone 5 now.

I guess Ive doesn´t miss S.Jobs at all.
Finally he got what he deserved. He is the biggest factor in Apple´s success.

Ive has no problem forcing Jobs to chose between him and Jon Rubinstein. Perhaps Jobs and Forstall weren't as close as people suggest? Ive was at Steve's bedside when he died. Ive, Cook and Cue were the only Apple executives at his burial service.

Some people see in this is the total lack of leadership of Tim Cook .. Unable to weld his team.
Steve Jobs did more than 10 years with the team and Tim Cook in less than a year has managed to crack ...
For some, this is Tim Cook Apple's problem, because yes apple has a problem, it loses its image of an innovator firm replaced by a Financial Holding.

Tim Cook and his friends will spend more time to stay in power instead of moving Apple forward.
The real punishment may come from the competition and consumers disinterest.

Forstall has not only been on iOS projects but since the beginning of OSX he was one of the first system architects and a part of what apple is today, so he may go elsewhere, and imitate Rubin to fight apple.
He's replaced by the guy who made OS Lion and Mountain Lion, and many people complained and still complain about it.
Look at what happened with Steve Jobs and the creation of Next .... Will history repeats itself ?
20 years ago apple had to fight Microsoft, today you have to add Google, Samsung etc...

Maybe, but Ive also stood in Job´s shadow. Not satisfying for a designer of his class i guess.
There is no antagonism in still visiting the funeral of a person you maybe were befriedned with and definitely worked with for many years.

Good to see Browett out. Everyone here said he wasn't a good fit for Apple and now they can feel vindicated. He needs to go back to horrible Dixons/Currys stores.

Hate the design of Newstand, iBooks, Game Center, Calendar, Notes and then saw Passbook app at the iPhone 5 / iOS6 Keynote. I barfed when I saw the paper shredding in action in Passbook. I welcome this news!

Um, what? Maybe my sarcasm detector is off, but you do realize that you already can't see individual pixels unless you're holding your phone closer to your face than is comfortable to use, right? That's the definition of a retina display. Increased resolution on the iPhone at this point would have absolutely no point except to make the thing more expensive and harder to produce.
This reads like "Apple has told you to not be able to see the pixels, don't question that!"
I don't have great eyes, but I can clearly see pixels on the iPhone 5 screen. I'm not trying to say the screen is bad or anything, but Apple's "Retina"-definition is flawed. You need to take a lot more things into consideration than just the resolution of the retina, as the retina is not a ccd-chip. For example, look at images on your iPhone screen that are not antialiased. There are your pixels. Granted, with antialiasing on, they are not that obvious, but still visible through a similar effect.

I thought Apple hiring Browett was a terrible decision in the first place so i'm glad he's going. Scott i quite liked (i thought he had that nice spark of enthusiasm on stage, a bit like Steve himself) but i hate skuomorphism so maybe that's not such a bad thing. Good news Mr Ive is taking over the look and feel of iOS, i'm a big fan of his work; it'll be really interesting to see where iOS goes in the future; just a little worried they're putting all their eggs into one basket here...

Apple are clearly struggling to get the right mix of people at the top at the moment; i hope it settles down soon because i don't think this kind of constant shuffling around is not very good for a company.

These are good moves. Forstall was mediocre at best, and Browett was a disaster.
