Maybe they will fix mail push notifications now.

Sure would be nice to have them send push notifications for messages that are read, too.

Super annoying to go from the mac, to the iPhone, to iPad and have the same old messages show up as a badge - and have to open the mail app only to find out I already read them (where they suddenly are 'marked read').

I shouldn't have to open mail to do that. Push notifications should take care of that on all macs/devices.

Seems to me anyone running the iOS team and going through that crap every day like the rest of us would want to fix it.

Good riddance to bad rubbish!

I'm so glad that both of these "guys" have been booted where the sun don't shine! Browett is a cheap-ass discount store guy with no taste and no idea of how to give fine customer service. Forstall is a liar and a weasel who was more into coroprate politics than he was into creating great products!

Just look at Maps! Even though it is the best mapping software on the planet, it should have been better. MUCH better. That's the way a REAL Apple exec does things.

And now with Sir Jon in charge of all human interface, we'll see iOS and OSX totally merge into the one OS to rule them all! Forstall was too pushy and didn't listen to Sir Jon. He didn't have what it takes to really progress towards transcendent greatness. But Sir Jon does! He'll whip Federighi into shape in no time, and together, they will introduce an OS that again changes the entire world!

This is the tipping point for Apple, when they transform themselves from being merely the biggest, baddest tech company in the word to being the biggest and most powerful force the world has ever seen! The Catholic Church? The Roman Empire? Twentieth-Century America? They ain't going to look like sheet compare to what Apple is about to become. Nations will bow down to them. Before Tim and Sir Jon are finished, Apple will become the center of World Civilization.

And it can't happen soon enough!

Whoa there, buddy.

Not really odd. Apple considers optical media the next floppy drive. If you need it buy external. As for blu-ray. Not surprised either. Not only does it compete with iTunes, Apple doesn't want to bother with a form a DRM they don't control (DVD being an exception) and that is better suited in the home theatre and not on the computer. Again, the only support is the most basic and if you want a drive, buy external.

You shouldn't comment on half of a sentence. I have no problem that optical drives are gone. My problem is that they seem to be sprinting into the future while looking in the past. If they want the future to happen now, then they should avoid referencing the past in their design choices. It doesn't make much sense.

I disagree. Certain things should be relegated to the dust bin. But skewmorphism isn't necessarily looking to the past. It's looking at something familiar. We will always have paper notebooks. Heck the "desktop" has a real life analogue. It's a part of design. What Apple is eliminating has nothing to do with how the calendar app is designed (which I like by the way) - they are eliminating technology that is irrelevant to them. They did it before.

i'm just surprised ios still hasn't evolved into a more gesture based interface without all those silly buttons. minority report style if you like. it's still an os you could operate with a mouse. look, no hands!

time for new heads, different think.

Big loss for Scott. Looks like he won’t be granted his 1,000,000 shares of Apple (half would have been granted in 2015, the other half in 2020 if he had stayed). He’s lossed out on $600,000,000. Big decision by Cook and the board.

On the other hand, I think everyone is pleased Browett is out.

Well, Scott probably isn't hurting financially... Those awards are meant to be paid out if he chooses to stay, but there's always golden parachutes written in if they are asked to leave before it vests. I'm sure he's walked away with a tidy sum... not anywhere near $600M, but I bet $50M is not unlikely.

I think we all knew that there were internal conflicts between Forstall and the other senior management so I'm not surprised.

Browett must have made some major mistakes to get the sack so soon. He's only been there 5 minutes. Or maybe he just decided to take the money and run recognising that Apple isn't Dixons/Currys and he would have one battle after another to go down that misguided route. I hope they bring the previous guy back as he did an excellent job.

I think Tim Cook needs to look at his VP management team. Personally I would move things around and increase the number of seats at the table. For such a large company they have a very small top management table. I can understand it when Steve was in charge because what he said went and that was it but Tim Cook doesn't seem to be so autocratic. A wider team would open them up to fresh talent coming through the ranks with new ideas. You can't keep the old guard around forever and not expect things to go stale.

Really glad to see that John Browett was shown the door. He may or may not be a good retail executive, but he was a terrible fit for Apple. Making retail staffing cuts at the cost of the customer experience showed he didn't understand what Apple is all about. The fact that he was sent packing with Forstall makes me suspect that Forstall may have been instrumental in Browett staying on as long as he did.

The skeuomorph look as stated earlier is a nice compliment/contrast to the minimal design of the iPad. I wouldn't want to see it completely gone but I do worry as others have said this with Jony the interface will be reduced to an industrial/minimal look. But i'm definitely willing to give him a chance. I think he'll find a way to make the interface natural and organic (Jobs and Ive were inspired by sunflowers for an earlier iMac design). This changes shouldn't be surprising I think as management changes theres naturally going to be a shift in perceptions. Though Forstall might have been seen as valuable by Jobs, new management might not feel the same way.

Glad Browett is gone but are is he still getting that overblown salary?

I'm not too thrilled that Forstall is gone as I actually like him. I thought he had great charisma at the keynotes and enjoyed his stage presence, it kind of reminded me of Steve. However, I wasn't entirely a fan of where iOS was headed so I'm glad that responsibility has fallen to the OS X team.

Full disclosure.... I am currently holding a long position in AAPL. I'm glad the markets are closed tomorrow because I'm wondering how this news will affect the stock price.

The sky is falling

This is bad for Apple. Dump your shares immediately. Apple is trending down these days. I miss Steve Jobs. Apple is nothing without the mind of Jobs.

Please tell me your were being sarcastic. What was bad for Apple has already happened. This is correcting the problem, which is DEFINITELY NOT bad for Apple.

Apple will not be the same w/o Jobs. That doesn't guarantee it'll be worse. Jobs was no deity. He made mistakes too (cube, anniversary edition, MobileMe). Steve accepted responsibility and did something when things went bad. Cook is doing the same thing.

Let's see what things look like after the next release.

lol....No one here is giving ***** about Browett.... the guy must be really bad at what he does/did ?

MR admins can as well remove his mention in OP.

I am praying for AAPL right now...
I'm already $900 under, jesus...
I think this is good for Apple long term, but I doubt the stocks will agree...

Sell now? Who else is in the same boat??

Not sure about adding responsibilities to Ive. He may be good at one thing, doesn't mean he'll be good at others.

With all the turmoil, criticism and change the past year, this is the beginning of the end for Apple. No company can stay at the top forever.

Forstall was a consistent man that Steve liked. Steve probably would've never hired Browett.

Steve Jobs would never have let Forstall hit the road, Tim Cook has.

The problem was iOS6 was boring and brought nothing new or exciting. In terms of the biggest iOS update in terms of new features: iOS1>iOS2>iOS4>iOS5>iOS3>iOS6

iOS 5 was huge with iCloud and cord cutting. It removed a big barrier for novice users: iTunes. Yes, many of them find iTunes and the whole app/music syncing / backup thing confusing! I saw a Facebook update from one of my friend a couple of weeks ago: [a picture of Galaxy SIII] "saying goodbye to iTunes!" I don't think he made a right choice, but it pretty much sums up what the public thinks about iTunes.
