Apple today at WWDC 2022 announced the "next generation" of CarPlay, which will support multiple displays within a vehicle, offer built-in climate controls for adjusting the temperature of the A/C or heat within the CarPlay interface, and more.

The next-generation CarPlay experience will be able to provide content across multiple screens within a vehicle, and deeper integration with a vehicle's hardware will allow users to control the radio, adjust climate controls, and more directly within CarPlay. Apple said the new version of CarPlay will also seamlessly display a vehicle's speedometer, fuel level, temperature, and more on the instrument cluster.

Apple added that CarPlay users will be able to personalize their driving experience by choosing different gauge cluster designs, and widgets will provide at-a-glance information from the Weather and Music apps right on a vehicle's dashboard.

Apple said the first vehicles to support the new CarPlay experience will be announced in late 2023, with committed automakers including Ford, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Honda, Acura, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, Nissan, Volvo, Porsche, and more. Apple said it will share more information about the new CarPlay experience in the future.

Introduced in 2014, CarPlay is Apple's in-vehicle software platform that can be accessed through a vehicle's infotainment system when an iPhone is connected to the vehicle with a Lightning cable or wirelessly in vehicles that support wireless CarPlay.

Sounds AMAZING but also a bummer for those with existing cars (that have recently purchased). Just bought a 2021 and have no desire to upgrade until absolutely necessary.

This looks insane. I just bought a new Kia Sportage 2023 Hybrid three weeks ago and it has one of those wrap around screens. I'm praying that this new experience will be compatible with my car.

So far, this is the one thing that has me most excited this year. New Car Play looks gorgeous.

Too bad Ford signed up with Android Auto … I mean they probably secured a revenue stream from google that would exceed what apple allows … but I wouldn’t feel comfortable with anything google in the background on my car (given their propensity for spying on users and crappy long term support of initiatives).

This is interesting. I am in the market for a new car right now in fact, and in looking at Volvos, I can see that in 2023 their entire infotainment system will be run on Android. I understand this is not just that it supports Android Auto, but that is the underpinning of the entire interface. And yet their logo was there at this announcement. This will be interesting to see play out.

(Meanwhile Mini, which supports only Apple Car Play and not Android Auto, was not listed).

Apple is smarter to own the dashboard rather than build a car themselves.

The interface reminds me of the G1000 in small airplanes, which has become super popular.

I travel for business and rent cars at airports roughly 50 to 70 times a year. Fortunately, these days most cars/SUVs have wired CarPlay.(occasionally some have wireless CarPlay) My dream is that one day, I can get into a rental car, fire up CarPlay and the car will immediately set my preferred temperature, favorite local radio stations, and possibly even my own power seat and mirror settings....

This is pretty cool actually. However existing cars are out of luck. However for radio and climate controls, hard buttons are always better.

Not necessarily.

My truck is a 2014 and I have an aftermarket CarPlay receiver in it.

Granted on some cars it can be expensive to integrate an aftermarket system (but it IS possible, even with fancy displays in existing cars). There are even integration kits that will essentially bypass your infotainment computer and output from a new computer into your cars existing displays.

If you’re willing to pay for it, you absolutely can upgrade CarPlay in at least some fashion. Granted you wouldn’t get the gauge cluster features but, personally I would love to have CarPlay include my HVAC and more car-related control systems.

Apple today announced significant enhancements coming to CarPlay, including support for multiple displays in a vehicle, built-in climate controls for adjusting the A/C or heat temperature without leaving the CarPlay interface, and more.

The next-generation CarPlay experience will support a wide variety of displays and digital gauge clusters in vehicles, with the interface able to display a vehicle's speedometer, RPM, and more alongside Apple Maps navigation.

Does seem a lot like a Mercedes EQS interior, yeah?
