For anyone wondering why BMW isn’t on that list, reason is most likely because they can’t source the chips at the moment, so they’ve been shipping cars without CarPlay and promising to upgrade the infotainment system when they can get the chips in. For those wondering, yes that is a BMW shown in the graphic, and I’m 99% sure BMW will be getting this new CarPlay too, just not yet. When the chip shortage levels out, I’m sure they’ll sign on.
It’s a rendering, it’s not a BMW or anything in the graphic.

There’s no way to know if BMW will sign on at this point and usually BMW is front and center with Apple features, going back to iPod integration when they had the 30 pin cable and controls for the iPod. This is going to be a 2 year journey until we see cars with this Carplay concept and I don’t know if the chip shortage will still continue for 2 years, but it could.

Regardless of chips though, I’m sure there’s hesitance from carmakers, potentially including BMW, of trading their, I don’t know, distinctiveness, autonomy, etc, to Apple and so they will want to stick to their own gauges and climate controls. Some of them really stuck it out to not put in Carplay at all (and Android Auto), and Tesla continues to stick it out. Toyota was really against Carplay but then added it years after others did, they claimed their apps suite was better, Entune, but it wasn’t. I bet there’s a huge concern about Apple dictating more and more of car electronics, and there are those who won’t like it. And it wouldn’t surprise me if BMW internally said this is too far for them.

Similarly there’s resistance to Android Automotive, which is Google’s full blown car OS, which has been widely praised for being a smooth system and available with Android apps, but only really GM and Volvo have adopted the full blown Google Automotive Suite version which has Play Store and Google Maps. You would think car makers would want to push straight up Google Maps in the car because it’s a user favorite, but they don’t want to give up things like data analytics.

But that’s just how things are. Excellent systems like Android Automotive or the new Carplay are getting serious pushback because both are commodifying car electronics and they don’t like that.

Apple is smarter to own the dashboard rather than build a car themselves.

The interface reminds me of the G1000 in small airplanes, which has become super popular.
Not only that: think car sharing for a minute. Having your own instrument cluster following you each time you board a different car is one very good approach to help fight climate change, considering owning a car is very wasteful (since cars owned aren’t used about 90% of the time).

That could potentially be a paradigm shift!

Overall, this looks amazing and can’t wait but there’s a hitch. Are there going to be no new changes for now, not even a simple addition of whether to the existing CarPlay anything? The changes are in late 2023 when the cars will be announced? And I’m supposed to trust Ford to keep updated given their crappy ability to update their sync system now? Anyone seeing anything new? I mean by the time these changes are scheduled to be available We will be on iOS 17.

Honestly kind of surprised BMW isn’t on their list. They are usually one of Apple’s first partners for new car related technologies.
Recently had a 3 series with wireless CarPlay and it was awful. Couldn’t use the nav in a city as it was just so laggy. Wished there had been an option to sue it wired.

This looks absolutely amazing but I wonder if it will be suitable for higher-end cars or just mid to low end. There's a lot of features in higher-end cars where being integrated to the entertainment system allows them to work correctly. This is why I mostly don't use Carplay currently. Some examples:

  • Head-up display directions / music selection
    • I've test-drove a brand new BMW where it now puts an arrow in from Carplay but that's far worse than BMW's native navigation. All other cars I've driven though you just lose this functionality from HUD when using Carplay
  • EV intelligence
    • PHEV's use your navigation to optimise when to use the engine and when to run electric, that's lost if you don't navigate using the in-build car navigation
    • Tesla's and other makes now using navigation to know when to pre-heat the battery for faster charging
  • Suspension adjustments
    • My last 7 series used the navigation data to adjust the suspension to maximise comfort / body roll
  • Eco-driving modes
    • Use your guidance to alert you when to lift off the accelerator as coming up to a corner / junction so you can coast to save fuel
  • Many screen vehicles
    • I had rear seat entertainment in my 7 series so in total there was 6 screens. Driver display, HUD, central screen, 2 x rear entertainment screens and 1 x rear tablet. Using BMW's iDrive the rear users could set the navigation, change the music, etc.
What I guess I'm getting at is it won't be good enough if Apple is only being fed data from the car like rpm's, fuel levels and so on. Carplay needs to feed back to the car also because some of the cars systems like batteries, suspension and so on are adjusted based on navigation data. For it to work in a top-end car, they also need to be able to drive 6 odd screens from Carplay. Otherwise using it you lose capabilities you don't with the cars own systems. As much as I love Carplay, it's only suitable for mid to low tier cars unless they do this right.

Never had an issue in my 7 series with this, in my Land Rover though it is a bit flakier to be honest.

My theory: what we saw here is never going to come to automakers - this was a soft reveal of Apple Car.

Apple today at WWDC 2022 announced the "next generation" of CarPlay, which will support multiple displays within a vehicle, offer built-in climate controls for adjusting the temperature of the A/C or heat within the CarPlay interface, and more.

The next-generation CarPlay experience will be able to provide content across multiple screens within a vehicle, and deeper integration with a vehicle's hardware will allow users to control the radio, adjust climate controls, and more directly within CarPlay. Apple said the new version of CarPlay will also seamlessly display a vehicle's speedometer, fuel level, temperature, and more on the instrument cluster.

Apple added that CarPlay users will be able to personalize their driving experience by choosing different gauge cluster designs, and widgets will provide at-a-glance information from the Weather and Music apps right on a vehicle's dashboard.

Apple said the first vehicles to support the new CarPlay experience will be announced in late 2023, with committed automakers including Ford, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Honda, Acura, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, Nissan, Volvo, Porsche, and more. Apple said it will share more information about the new CarPlay experience in the future.

Introduced in 2014, CarPlay is Apple's in-vehicle software platform that can be accessed through a vehicle's infotainment system when an iPhone is connected to the vehicle with a Lightning cable or wirelessly in vehicles that support wireless CarPlay.

I think this not a good thing. Now car companies will create inferior screens and expect everyone to get Apple Car Play and pay a subscription fee to maintain the operations of your car. Spend $50,000 on a car, I expect everything to be there and not require a subscription. BMW is charging for Carplay. Other will follow suit, and expect kickbacks from Apple.

Yeah if they do this it will be bad for consumers. It would be one more step towards trying to make everyone rent everything :(

Not too bad considering existing cars have regular CarPlay. And of course Tesla doesn’t but their UI is decent.

But next car will have to support this for sure! If Tesla won’t get on board, bye bye Tesla!
Considering Tesla has almost two years worth of OTA updates on their software UI to go until the new CarPlay finally sees the light of day, they have the opportunity to look every bit as good as CarPlay without supporting it. (As far as I can tell, the future CarPlay does not have any new *features* Tesla does not already support, other than ones that only apply to gas (ICE) vehicles.

No car should have this amount of information displayed while driving. This is a failure of design to mitigate risks to non-users -- in this case, other cars on the road who have to deal with the driver of this car browsing THEIR CALENDAR on a wraparound screen while driving. Extremely irresponsible and I cannot fathom why so many on this thread on applauding this

Hopefully the new wireless CarPlay has either a stronger connection or Apple purchases a licensed wireless band to eliminate the interference drop outs. It's great when it works but terrible when there's interference.

Maybe they will be adding 802.11ad to the new iPhone and will switch to it. Should be less interference in that band and it is similarly meant for short range line of site communication and much higher bandwidth which may be needed for this
