I really hope this isn't a trend that will lead to less physical knobs. IMO, physical HVAC controls should be with a physical knob and/or button.

Too late. My 2022 Audi A6 already is all touch screen, including the HVAC controls. Dash is completely screen-based as well, including the speedometer and tachometer/RPMs. Some of the technology is really neat, but some of it is a little too much. I wouldn't have minded less screens, more buttons, and a little more storage space like my old 2013 had.

I wonder how that Multi-Display will work with polarized sunglasses 🤔.
My Audi is already all screen based (just using it's own native systems except the one screen for carplay), and the screens are all fine with polarized sunglasses. No issues at all.

How could anyone want the whole car, the entire primary interface, to be depending upon an external third party device?

What if it wigs out while driving?

Carplay does weird stuff all the time!

Oh to have a car with this setup. 😍🤤. Would be so nice to not have to worry with ****** automaker software. Apple’s implementation is gorgeous, and it’d be so convenient and useful.

what will happen to simpler design that runs on current cars; I don't see that much detailed. that's the issue for most of us I suppose.

I -so- wish that the current system gets a little bit smarter with gps and maps even at least bit it shows my current speed and also shows me speed limits, warns etc.

Let's be honest...the "normal" CarPlay is what will be relevant for like 99.5% of us

Buying an entirely new car .... and specifically buying a model that needs full buy in from the manufacturer to let Apple "take over the whole interface"... is a tiny tiny niche of folks

That is not in the interest of the car maker really at all -- and Apple and "consumers might want this!" is very little leverage on something like this.

If it wigs out it just goes back to the default car system. You’ll still have your gauges and controls, don’t worry.

They’re not going to make cars that require you to have an iPhone. Half of the US uses Android and 3/4ths of the world uses Android.

While bombing through traffic at 65 -- it's quite an interesting possible failure mode situation (possibly quite dangerous too).

Not really worried about this -- mostly for discussion.

The adoption rates on this will be pretty tiny for a long time yet (given the need for a new car, starting next year, from select manufacturers who agree to fully participate and likely only on some models)

Hopefully Toyota and Lexus are included (and not late to the party like they were with regular CarPlay support)

This strikes me as something that car manufacturers will use to ramp up the "car subscription services" concept again.

No way they are going to acquiesce to this level without getting some remuneration

It’s not dangerous. It’ll take almost no time to switch between CarPlay and the regular system. Cars will probably render but not display the gauges anyway, the CarPlay is just an overlay that goes on when enabled, but if it fails it just say “overlay off”.

Car engineers had to think about these things already when they switched to digital gauges.

Wow, I really got blown away by this feature. By far the most exciting part of the keynote. Too bad it's going to take a year and a half from now to start the deployment.

I guess it won't work with existing cars... damn, my '21 Jazz (Fit) could really use a nicer gauge cluster, the original is hideous.

This whole thing needs major regulator intervention

If it works like modern CarPlay but with deeper access to car system information, I'll bet that it'll just drop off and the car's native gauges underneath will be there. I also think this'll be more reliable than current CarPlay. They need new hardware, so they'll have opportunity to drastically improve the phone's connection. Who knows, maybe it'll require a cable to work.

taking a screenshot will produce some photos with all these displays

This looks insane. I just bought a new Kia Sportage 2023 Hybrid three weeks ago and it has one of those wrap around screens. I'm praying that this new experience will be compatible with my car.

So far, this is the one thing that has me most excited this year. New Car Play looks gorgeous.
Didn’t see KIA or Hyundai on the list from today’s announcement

For anyone wondering why BMW isn’t on that list, reason is most likely because they can’t source the chips at the moment, so they’ve been shipping cars without CarPlay and promising to upgrade the infotainment system when they can get the chips in. For those wondering, yes that is a BMW shown in the graphic, and I’m 99% sure BMW will be getting this new CarPlay too, just not yet. When the chip shortage levels out, I’m sure they’ll sign on.

What if… this is Apple Car. It could be an OS interface that plugs into your car and takes over full functionality. First roll out is this, whilst enabling the collection of data from various car manufacturers. With future updates, self-driving is enabled.

It could be akin to the Apple TV. Use an existing host for mass roll out.

In my opinion, this was the most interesting part of the entire Keynote. It’s too bad it requires full auto manufacture support, meaning most of us will either never see this or it will take years…

Unfortunately, it didn’t seem like iOS 16 provides any new features for current CarPlay users…

Maybe this was discussed but since I haven't watched the full video yet (planning on tonight), I don't know the answer. Will there be interface updates for those of us that don't have $40,000+ to spend on a new car? I have a pretty nice 8" display in my 2018 Accord Touring so some of these improvements would be nice. I would like to be able to set up iOS widgets to be displayed in the car. One in particular is my Dexcom (glucose monitor) widget so I can see my glucose numbers clearly when I am driving.
All I want is support for maps in my instrument cluster. The factory nav sucks but it it the only way to get it on my car.
