Really don't understand 8 GB entry level RAM. Assuming Apple maintains OS support for 5 years, it means Apple will need to ensure the 2028 MacOS update run with 8 GB RAM to continue supporting all the M3 MBP/iMac buyers. This could easily be 2030 if support is for 6 years and the M3 MBA doesn't launch until deep into next year...
I feel like it is entirely component cost and margin for Apple. Memory is an insanely expensive option. The margin on the custom builds for 16 GB from 8 GB must be very profitable for them.

I think it’s because anyone on an M chip isn’t going to be the target audience for this refresh cycle. The audience is going to be Intel upgrades and outright new purchases. Computers weren’t ever meant to have the same upgrade cycle as a phone. They are bigger investments.

Lol. bigger investments… My iPhone costs 2x of my Mac mini

I think when we look back in history years from now, the M3 is where we'll say was the pivot point where Apple set the gold standard.

The M1 was the revolutionary starting point, the M2 was a bit lackluster and now the M3 is where Apple took it to a whole new level.

You’ll say the same thing again in 5 years time. lol.

As for gold standard, I’d say apples products generally have always been the gold standard.

I reckon give Apple a few years to mature their gpu further and then we will have a game changer.

They sold out on opening week really fast. I put in an order for a black M3 Max 14” MBP with 48GB RAM/2TB storage and it pushed out 8 days in shipping in the time it took me to check out using Apple Pay.

This is the question I have. I would prefer to have a 13” version and not sure if Apple will introduce one later that I should hold off for
The 14" is just a bigger screen in a similar sized unit (the display borders are much smaller). I wouldn't expect a smaller Pro machine. Your other choice would be a 13" MacBook Air, but you'll get less performance and a less good display, etc.

so I just received a new M2 Max 16 inch macbook exactly 14 days ago. It is a custom configuration (2Tb SSD, 30 Core GPU and 64GBR RAM). I need it now for work, but I'm really tempted to return and upgrade (I think I am still inside the exchange window), but I see I can no longer get 64Gb RAM. Either the M2 Pro maxes out at 36Gb or the M2 Max goes to 96Gb but then it is outside of my budget. Thoughts?

I knew they had something planned for the 13" Pro. And they did just what I wanted - replace it with the 14.

Would have been a slam dunk, but of course, they had to go and put the base RAM at 8 GB. What a joke.

EDIT: Could be mistaken but think its also a huge jump in price from what the 13" was in Canada.

It felt weird presentation never seen so much comparison vs an Intel-Mac and they kept going on about how fast vs Intel-mac.. of course its going to be 11x faster.. there must be a lot of users still using Intel.

Not much gaming demo that people expected so not sure why the change of event time..
Yes, I thought they’d mention Resident Evil 4 to keep to the Halloween theme

You can still configure the M3 Max for 36GB, 48GB, 64GB, or 96GB of RAM – you don't need to get 96GB if you don't want to. Yes, exchange it, you'll have a better machine for the same price.

Great upgrades for sure. But will most people who already own the M1 Pro even see much of a difference? I can't imagine it being much faster than what I already have for a lighter user such as myself.

14” M3 MacBook Pro at £1,699 comes with just 8GB of memory, compared to the 16GB on the M2. There’s your price cut folks. You give it all back upgrading 😂
Can some explain the 8 gig! In the lab was he trying to say ram is faster than the traditional 8 gig. I get memory pressure in yellow on my m1 air whole running basic office apps.
