Anyone considering a 14" MacBook Pro with regular M3 for $1600 and 8/512 would be better off buying a clearance 14" MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and 16/512 for $1,450 or less just like how the 14" MacBook Pro with M1 Pro 16/512 were priced when the M2 Pro version came out.

M3 Max with 14-core CPU and 30-core GPU (300GB/s memory bandwidth) or M3 Max with 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU (400GB/s memory bandwidth)

please note that different chip configs now has different memory bus configuration (by quick glance the low-end M3 max has 384-bit vs 512-bit on the high end chip).

and also M3 Pro has probably been degraded from 256-bit bus to 192-bit bus.

Great upgrades for sure. But will most people who already own the M1 Pro even see much of a difference? I can't imagine it being much faster than what I already have for a lighter user such as myself.
For a "lighter user", probably not a huge difference. If you don't feel slowed down by the M1 Pro's performance, it's probably not all that worth the upgrade for you. For folks who do heavy software development, graphics processing, design/CAD, music production etc. – absolutely they will appreciate the speed boost. It's all down to your usage.

Based on what you said, you'd probably be fine waiting another 1-2 years for the M4 at least.

No MBA announcement makes me think their strategy is what they do with iPhones... the non-Pro model gets the older processor. If you want the new processor, then you have to spend more to get the Pro model. The MBA is a phenomenal computer and should be given the M3.

I thought we had AV1 decoding before now. So we're just getting AV1 decoding on M3? Apple, the company the leverages their GPUs within their designated applications is this late to the game...

is there a problem with the configurator or we aren’t able to get 64GB on the 30GPU cores M3 Max model lol

if that’s a limit it’s really BS

I'll take a MBP with 14" 120Hz screen for $500 less. I know that 8GB RAM is a crime in almost 2024 but at least it's not a 60Hz screen.

It probably will, just give it some time.

I just bought an M2 MBP in September because my 2017 Intel MBP was no longer supported. It’s very frustrating to see that just a month later I could have gotten an M3 MBP for the same exact price as a machine released just 9 months ago…
If it makes you feel better I’m in the return window for the m2 Pro model I just bought. But I got it about $300 off, so I’m just going to keep it rather than return for the M3 Pro. It’s still blazing fast for what I do (photo and video editing, and word processing for work) and just not worth the hassle for 10% or so more speed. The extra 2 GB RAM gave me a little pause but I haven’t had any issues with that anyway.

Well they also didn't update the Mac mini, which has the M2 Pro.

At least the memory on that is user upgradeable though. Can't do that with a Mac anymore.
Client doesn't upgrade memory after the fact. Against the companies policies as they need the exact same config for all cases. They need the ability to swap the device at any given time, so they constantly have about 15 of them ready in storage.

so I just received a new M2 Max 16 inch macbook exactly 14 days ago. It is a custom configuration (2Tb SSD, 30 Core GPU and 64GBR RAM). I need it now for work, but I'm really tempted to return and upgrade (I think I am still inside the exchange window), but I see I can no longer get 64Gb RAM. Either the M2 Pro maxes out at 36Gb or the M2 Max goes to 96Gb but then it is outside of my budget. Thoughts?
Do it today. Apple’s return window is 14-days. They haven’t extended it for Christmas yet, which would go until the end of January.

Even with the comparisons to M1 they did, I’m still not convinced it’s a worthwhile upgrade to us M1 owners. My M1 Pro is still stupid fast with great battery life, the improvements seems to be in very specific workloads and not overall general speed.

The GPU upgrades are intriguing but that’s about it
well my M1 max is far too slow.

will most likely be ordering a 14 M3 Max 128gb RAM shortly.

100% agree, I figure I will be fully satisfied with my 14" M1Pro Macbook Pro for a couple more years which means I will be interested in purchasing an M5 or M6 based Macbook Pro certainly not an M3 based. Kinda weird the memory limit on the M3Pro is only 36GB this means it has only gone up 4GB in two generations.

I feel like it is entirely component cost and margin for Apple. Memory is an insanely expensive option. The margin on the custom builds for 16 GB from 8 GB must be very profitable for them.
It's definitely a desire to push the rip-off upgrade pricing and ladder pricing dynamic (rather than spend £200 extra to upgrade to 16 GB, wouldn't you rather spend £400 extra and get 18 GB alongside more CPU and GPU cores?), but is very shortsighted to the software engineering challenges of getting the 2028/9 MacOS release to run with 8 GB RAM. Still, that's 5 years away and it's likely Tim will have checked out by then so it will some one else's problem...

I love my M1. Plenty fast and stable.
