Holding pattern for redesign it seems. I've absolutely loved my 14" M1 Pro and am more than happy to wait.
Interesting that folks "wait for redesign." Personally I think the well-evolved design of the current MBPs is superb. Redesign is way over-rated. Version 1 of some new design provides negative "redesign" attraction to me.

I still might buy a redesigned MBP to get some feature like nano-texture or whatever. But the reality of v1 redesign I see as a negative. It took years of evolution (e.g. keyboards) to get to where we are now.

The golden rule: if you need a system now, get it now. It's not worth punishing yourself for a year in hopes of getting a redesign. And while enthusiasts are willing to accept potential first-gen quirks, both pros and newcomers benefit from some predictability.

Not including a charger in the box on a “Pro” machine just smacks of cheapness. Or hubris. Maybe both.

Whenever I passed along an old laptop I always passed the charger that came with it. Why? Within a set period of time without a charger it becomes a brick. It’s a de facto necessary piece of equipment to make your over $1,000 (or Euro) purchase actually functional.

I guess I get some people don’t have a problem with it. But I would. The computer won’t run without an adapter. It’s not some sort of optional equipment.

This is Tim, at the absolute cheapest. Apple keeps this crap up and the they’ll lose customers. A lot of people will feel that way. It just smacks of cheapness.

A “Pro” laptop is a PREMIUM product. I shouldn’t have to pay à la carte for the things I need to make it work.

Why does this article say "up to 45% faster graphics, compared to the M4 chip"
... when Apple's announcement says: "up to 1.6x faster graphics than the previous generation"
????

Two years ago, people were complaining that the standard 8GB for a MacBook Pro wasn't enough. Then thanks to Apple Intelligence, we finally got 16GB standard. Now, people are complaining 16GB isn't enough for a MacBook Pro? I don't get it.

They'll complain about something else if it went to 32. Thing is most of the complaints come from people who never even used the 8GB model and now the 16GB model.

Larger display. To me the 15" Air is only really up against the 16" Pro, which is more than a grand dearer. Even with a higher resolution, the smaller display is limiting for working on the machine and juggling more than one window at a time. Ultimately party tricks like stage manager and flicking between desktops can't make up for physical area past a certain point. While this may matter more or less to various use cases, it's a very real advantage for the Air if you do need to max the physical display area, and it's a fantastic machine if you just want a solid MacBook with a nice, big display.
I agree that more display real estate is a huge issue, and that the 16" MBA is indeed "a fantastic machine if you just want a solid MacBook with a nice, big display."

However "stage manager and flicking between desktops" are not "party tricks." Use of additional displays is a huge productivity enhancer for those of us that like having more display real estate. Personally I far prefer the XDR display of the MBP that has more pixels and is twice as bright as the MBA. Then I add one or two external displays at my fixed-work locations. Palettes or different apps can live on the external displays; or my preference is for 32" external displays with the MBP.

Why no M5 Pro or M5 Ultra?
It may have to do with yields on the M5 chip process. Yields of higher level Max and Ultra chips improve over time [becoming less costly], while base level chips are abundant earlier in the process evolution. Or it may relate to Apple wisely trying to spread out product builds and deliveries over the course of a year.

IMO both of those two things are probably in play.

Available colors are silver and space black. The article makes it sound like those are two of a further selection.
Those non-colors are preferable around any color-sensitive design environment. Actual colors are more appropriate for lower end consumer grade MBA laptops, so it will not surprise me to see only silver, black and/or space gray choices for MBPs.

That's been true for many laptops for years, but is less true today. I charge via the USB-C/TB port and like most people I have many examples of chargers that can do the job. Some of those chargers will charge slower than others but they all work.

Was really hoping this would get Thunderbolt 5. I guess that will be limited to the Pro and Max for at least another generation.

Is it a rare thing for them to release an M5 type update while keeping the previous generations Pro and Max chip? I had just assumed it would be an all or nothing upgrade every 12 to 18 months for the MacBook Pros.

This looks more like a M4S than an M5. The few spec bumps are nice (though as others have pointed out there were more specs that could have been bumped) but it doesn't appear to be a generational leap (unless say heat/efficiency is measurable improved). Do a Compare on the Apple site for the MacBook Pro 14" M4 and M5 and the side-by-side are word-for-word identical other than M45.

The AI/neural acceleration will be a leap forward for some but guessing overall a fairly narrow slice of Apple users. Not against the improvements of course but I bet 99% of users wouldn't know if someone secretly replaced their M5 with an M4 without checking About This Mac.

Part of the issue may be that the M4 was pretty solid...

4TB storage without needing to upgrade to the Pro/Max chips is a pleasant surprise for users like myself who don’t need a ton of power but have decades worth of files they’d like to keep locally. 32GB RAM for this use case is also more than feasible.

I think I’ll stick with my ride-or-die M1 Air for now, but glad to see we’re moving in this direction.
With support for Macs not going past the 10 year mark, is it really worth using these for file storage vs just buying an external one?

After a very brief dalliance with idea of upgrading my 14"MBPro, I decided the cost to do so is not worth it (cost - trade in for my not quite 1 year old 14" M4 MBPro = $1000), unsurprisingly. I am not the target market for this machine. So we will see what next years version brings with the rumored redesigned case and, perhaps, an OLED display. Then it might be worth it, meanwhile my 14" MBPro serves me very well.
