Very odd that the M5 models only have Thunderbolt 4 vs. M4's with Thunderbolt 5. I'm not sure what the real-world impacts of this are, but curious.
I think generally the M4<nothing> machines were also Thunderbolt 4, and only the Pro and Max machines had Thunderbolt 5. So this would just be continuing that practice, not a step down for M5.

Kind of interested that Apple did not move to the N1 in the MacBook Pro, but maybe the Broadcom Wi-Fi chip has certain functions N1 is not yet able to replicate.
N1 has had some issues. One patch so far, but still a lot of people complaining about CarPlay issues with N1 devices. Maybe they just are playing it safe this year. Next year we will probably see every device with N2 and C2X modems.

Tim loves a good SKU-fest

Me too! Oh wait, you said SKU...

The 1899 euro price (VAT 25% country) does not include a charger in EU but the M5 costs 100 euros less than the M4 was. I prefer this.
Yeah, at least there's that. Good for those who already have, or don't need a charger (using a monitor to charge for example, like me).

The base M4 MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt 4. You need to upgrade to the M4 Pro to get Thunderbolt 5. So there is no change here. It would have been nice for the base M5 to support Thunderbolt 5, a significant update, but it is apparently not to be.

Ouch. I just checked here in Switzerland, and yep - if you want to use your laptop for more than a few hours before chucking it in the bin, you'll need to order a separate power supply.

They don't even let you order one with the laptop unless you decide to customise the order (e.g. add RAM, nano texture display etc.). You have to select and add the laptop, then go to accessories, find a relevant power adapter and add that to the basket.

Crazy.

(Yours, a happy M4 MBP owner.)

Why would anybody buy this over macbook air 15?
120Hz mini-LED display, up to 33% more battery life, much better graphics performance, active cooling, extra USB-C port, HDMI port, SD card slot, better speakers and microphones...

There's actually A LOT of reasons to choose the base Pro over the Air if you're not on a strict budget. But realistically, once you up the Air's storage to match the Pro's 512GB, the price difference is only $200.

I get why Apple is still skimping on starting out at the low end for Memory/RAM, but it caps out at 32GB??? If I'm going to get a pro machine, I'm going to want more than that, especially after using this M1 MBP for so long. I suppose for the price, though, doubling the memory and storage is alright.
