The chip is temporary as the Air will get it as well eventually (right now the M4 air can be bought easily for 900 and as low as 800 - I did not even consider these discounts).

Do the other specs enable you to do more? No. 120hz is the only thing nice on that list.
Ayo so you will always plug your camera with a cable to get your photos...

Anyways just to give you an idea... if we compare this MacBook Pro to the 512gb MacBook Air... The difference is only 400 USD so like 350 euros AND NOT 700 !!!

seems less extreme in the US but here the 10core/10core 512GB Air is 1350 Eur, so the difference is still 450 Eur or 520 USD. It just seems so off considering what else you could get for that but I get it, the pricing isn't designed for consistency but for extracting the max willingness to pay.

I get why Apple is still skimping on starting out at the low end for Memory/RAM, but it caps out at 32GB??? If I'm going to get a pro machine, I'm going to want more than that, especially after using this M1 MBP for so long. I suppose for the price, though, doubling the memory and storage is alright.

M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations will offer more memory when they release early next year.

Who is not confused by the chip line up available right now? M2 Ultra 192 GB RAM to M5 with 32gb RAM max...

Different SoCs for different markets with different memory needs. M5 Pro and M5 Max will offer more memory than M5.

Why no M5 Pro or M5 Ultra?

Why is Apple so bad at releasing higher end chips are they stuck?

The M5 Pro and M5 Max are using a new multi-chiplet design that TSMC is currently working to scale production to the levels Apple needs for the MBP. Expectation is Pro and Max configurations will be available in Q1 2026 when TSMC gets the yields to the required levels.

why no 16in version? - as it starts at 'Mx Pro' level?

The 16" models are only offered in Pro and Max configurations so it will ship when those SoCs are ready early next year.

I don't get it. What's the point of this update? Why not wait until they have the whole M5 line up and do it right? The M4 Pro is better than the M5. The 16" gets nothing. That's ridiculous.

Pulls buyers forward in the cycle when they stagger like this.

Good for Apple -- mostly sucks for everyone else.

Apple is a financial engineering company, above all else, at this point.

This is not an accident.
This is Tim Cook.

M5 is ready now and the holidays are coming so they want it out there for people looking to upgrade older Apple Silicon Pro SoC model MBPs or buying their first one.

M5 Pro and M5 Max are a new design compared to the previous families and TSMC is still getting up to speed on meeting the necessary yields for Apple's needs.

It is very interesting that it comes with a Thunderbolt 4 port, given it is said to run a 5k or 6K screen with a faster refresh rate then 60HZ needs a faster port like Thunderbolt 5. So I guess this may not work with Apples new displays that are rumoured? Or the new displays won't have 120hz?

Perhaps they will use Display Stream Compression.

why does my macbook pro intel i7 2012 outperform my macbook airs 2020 M1 TODAY?
Depends very much what you’re doing with it? My m2 Air absolutely smoked my top of the range maxxed out Macbook pro i9 at pretty much everything (*well, everything I threw at it and that included heavy ML workloads, Logic pro, Video editing). Perhaps there is some floating point specific stuff that doesn’t run on the GPU that would have been close 🤷?

1350 euros? YO it's like 1030 euro in usa... + I think there is less taxes to pay in usa than Europe !

Personally, I think that Apple should limit the base chips, like the M5 here, to Mac Minis, MacBook Air and perhaps iMacs.

MacBook Pros should start with at the very least, a Mx Pro chip.

That said, I wonder if they will update the Mac Mini soon or we will have to wait another 6 months.

Off topic, but any idea how is this done on a Mac (red screen)?

When I bought my 14" MacBook Pro, I bought the M1 Pro model because that was the cheapest Apple offered. I did not need the extra CPU or GPU cores, but I had no choice to pay for them because I wanted the MiniLED ProMotion display.

If I bought a 14" MacBook Pro today, I would be happy with the M5 and saving $400 over the M5 Pro.

Considering that the base version is now available with up to 4 TB SSD storage, I hope that the MacBook Air M5 will get 4 TB as an option as well.

Ouch. I just checked here in Switzerland, and yep - if you want to use your laptop for more than a few hours before chucking it in the bin, you'll need to order a separate power supply.

They don't even let you order one with the laptop unless you decide to customise the order (e.g. add RAM, nano texture display etc.). You have to select and add the laptop, then go to accessories, find a relevant power adapter and add that to the basket.

Crazy.

(Yours, a happy M4 MBP owner.)
This post implies choosing a charger is part of the standard purchase process...no need to add RAM nano etc.

I think this is a good move by Apple, I have so many chargers I would be glad not to get another one (providing the price reflects that!) same with phones.

probably user error.
no really, my base M1 13" smoked 2018 Mini Hex i7. I still have a retina 2012 15" i7 and although it's a great laptop, it doesn't outperform any M1 under any circumstances
Nope, me is smart!
M1 is just overacted, the log in is slower, Music is garbage i cant see the light-grey type on Tahoe as a human should, the safari launch is slower, the unified memory is off by 10GB just using the computer, the top menu is transparent as that overlaps the program's menu thanks to Liquor Glass and the laptop gets hot since Tims decided not to place a fan inside these M1 MBA.
so not user error..

Super disappointed in the lack of a modem. Was what I was looking most forward too. Hopefully the pro max get it or the redesign.
