I was really hoping for a redesign. Some commenters are saying this design is from 2012 but I would go back to 2009 (since the computer is rarely viewed from the side and it's identical to the 2009 one from the front). I'm in the market for a new desktop, but I'm gonna feel dumb if the Apple Processor iMac with touchscreen comes out later this year.
There could be a smaller screen iMac coming out later this year with Apple Silicon, but it will be a lower-performing model like the current 21.5”. Rumored to be a 24”. Good luck with that touch screen though.

Why do you want fingerprints all over your iMac screen? I currently use iPads and iMacs, so have no love for that thought. The iPad has to be cleaned regularly even with hands washed often. :D

Still a significant update...hopefully this means AirPods Studio etc. Tomorrow and rest of week

This reminds me of the final late 2005 PowerBook revision before the MacBook Pro. The updates were as follows:

  • Resolution increased to 1440 x 960
  • DDR became DDR2
  • Analogue/optical digital audio in/out (admittedly this would have been nice for musicians)
Same CPU, same amount of RAM, same graphics, same hard drive. I think the base 15" may have gained an extra 64MB of video memory and a superdrive as standard. The 12" received only a superdrive as standard and none of the above updates.

I don't think we know that it'll be lower-performing. The screen being 24" is something I totally understand – if it is touchscreen, you'll be closer than you sat at the 27" ones. The dev kits Apple's giving out in anticipation are old iPad chips stuck into Mac Minis that are doing everything on Intel through emulation and even those are supposed to be comparable (kinda) to today's x86 processors. In fact, I would suspect Apple wants to make a big splash with their own silicon and would want to make the improvement dramatic. There should be an additional boost just from new applications that are being completely rewritten and shedding legacy code.

Not really, who wants to get stuck with WiFi 6? If you really care about 6 you’ll want 6E instead.

Exactly. And given the option for 10 GbE on the new iMac I'll be way happier with that than WiFi 6 (or beyond).

Hmmm... not sure. Will wait and see about RAM upgrades and internals. I'd probably go with base high end and upgrade the ram myself. Using my 2013 for work (to remote into a Windows machine using Citrix)...

The specs on the high end base 27" are plenty for what I need.

I still use a windows tower to play games, I think with this I could actually put it to rest if I got the 5700 and boot camped

The 8-core i7 will likely run cooler, at least under full load, then the 10-core i9.

As for GPU, I would go with the base 5500 since it will run the coolest and audio apps generally don't call on the GPU, I am guessing.
I wonder if the iMac Pro would run cooler?

I am definitely going to hold out for the redesigned model, which is also hopefully on the Apple chip.

Still the best looking all-in-one by far though.

I love iMac and my next main computer will be iMac (redesigned and hopefully larger, ~32").

That said - best looking all-in-one by far? You're delusional. Microsoft Surface Studio, for example, is lightyears ahead - both aesthetically and functionally (how elegantly it folds and allows pen input).

I expect Macs to be upgraded to Apple Silicon in (approx) order of their CPU requirements. MacBook Air, smaller iMac (21.5 or 24”), 13” MBP, 15” MBP, Mac mini, iMac/iMac Pro then Mac Pro.

Unknown until the 2020 iMac is out in the field and a teardown occurs. The iMac Pro does have the best cooling of any current shipping iMac, however. Also, refurb pricing on the base 8-Core model will move down a bit once they get some back in stock. Currently, it goes for $4299 on the Apple Store, but should drop another 5% when it shows back up, so $4069.00, most likely.

Yes, people like to save money in all aspects of life. This isn’t a novel concept.

People will work for a day coming up with a work around to save $10 on the price of an item. Because I guess 6-8 hours of their time isn’t worth that much money.

It should considering it is designed to dissipate significantly more heat.

A number of podcasts I follow all use 8-core iMac Pros for their editing work and they note the machine is extremely quiet even when all 8-cores are loaded up with audio filters.

If by “Just around the corner”, you mean, “Actually shipping in 6-9 months depending on yields”, then sure, by all means, wait.

October is the latest rumored release date for AMD Big Navi so that's around the corner.

Because the overwhelming majority of the applications available on the next Apple processor iMac (and going forward) will be iPhone and iPad apps designed for touch. Apple announced at WWDC that iOS apps would run natively and there aren't enough Mac apps for the experience to not feel broken if they make you use a mouse on touch apps. They also spaced things out more in Big Sur in a move that appears to allow for large touch targets. The iMac released today comes with a nano-texture glass option at the 27" size that would reduce fingerprints if brought to the touch version.

Touch is a big enough change that I would expect the shape of the next iMac to reflect that interaction – I'm thinking along the lines of the Surface Studio, but I'd be happy if they found another solution that you didn't have to stick your arms out like Frankenstein.

Yes, Core i9, 5700XT AMD nano-glass add $1500 without a second thought!

I just don't understand why people would want to buy an i9, which is possible to overclock and which runs pretty hot under load and cripple it with a chassis that is the iMac chassis. The CPU would and does throttle under load.

Because a Windows 10 sucks, but you can build yourself anything your heart desires and macOS is way better (no matter how much this crew denies it), but Apple doesn’t cater to their whims and it pisses them off, so they come here to whine about it every time Apple updates their Mac hardware. Every. Single. Time.

They’re still crying about USB-A, SD Card, MagSafe and a lighted Apple logo nearly FOUR years later at the same fevered pitch. Four years. Cannot imagine how many have restraining orders against them from ex-girlfriends/ex-wives.

Calm down and breathe, you are the only person who appears "fever pitched", you definitely qualify as 'most pissed off'.
You also win 'biggest whine' and 'most in need of a restraining order'.
No-one has mentioned any of the things you ranted about except for, well, you actually.
Finally, it is somewhat sexist to assume that all ex-partners are female.
