Defining a market segment based on merely the screen size of the device?

Nope, based on price which is a major criteria for how premium anything feels.

You know just like lots of people do around here all the time: ''Haha, people buy other stuff than Apple because they can't afford the real deal, nothing great is ever cheap!''

A cheap phone like this has nothing to do with 'premium' at all. It is trash for the masses.

What's there to be shocked at? The $399 starting price is ridiculous, only a fool would pay that for 16GB device. The real starting price is $499 for the 64GB.

You're not serious, are you? "Only a fool"? There are a ton of people that have zero use for the extra space. This is the perfect fleet phone for companies that don't want to subsidize each phone for each employee. This is the perfect phone for people that use cloud technologies a lot.

It's close enough, for me.

If you like it, then certainly a purchase to keep in mind on thursday. Realistically speaking, I didn't think a 6S Plus in a 5S body could be $399 priced since that's not how Apple's pricing margins work.

Noticeable differences between the 6S Plus and SE according to Apple's comparison page:

  • No Dual-domain pixels for wide viewing angles for SE.
  • No LTE Advanced in SE.
  • No Display Zoom and Reachability for SE.
  • No MIMO w/ Wifi in the SE.
  • No second generation Touch ID speeds for the SE.
  • No Optical Image Stabilization in the SE Camera.
  • No OIS for Video.
  • No 5 MP front facing camera. Only 1.2 for the SE.
  • Auto HDR only for photos for front facing camera of SE.
  • No Barometer in SE.
PS I won't really compare the screen size or battery. I know the SE has a 640p display, which is pitiful for a 2016 phone at that size to me. Idk about the PPI being high at that screen size. I just would want at least a 720p display for a 4" screen if I were interesting the SE.

Wait, it's a 640p display?!? Wow, I'm surprised they went that cheap. No OIS would be a major bummer for me as well.

What is with all the hysterics. Put the iPhone 5S and the iPhone SE next to each other, they are essentially the same design one with dull matte effect. It's certainly nothing to be proud of. This should be called iPhone 5S2 and come with the marketing tag "when laziness and profit focus collide".

Perhaps 80% plus of sold iPhones are 16GB models. Most people don't need extra storage with dirt cheap and ubiquitous cellular data to stream through much of the world.

Don't let someone's opinion get you riled up. People could call the S7 Edge an idiotic purchase, yet it won't make a difference to people that are extremely satisfied with theirs.

You don't think Apple would make a smaller 6S clone for $399? They had to cut some corners to make their phone seem like a 5S upgrade relative to the 6S.

Interesting. I'll bet there are a ton of consumers who are sticking to their 5/5s because they don't want to spend money on a 6/6s. This might entice less savvy consumers to upgrade.

Apple are just getting lazy now. They should have just releases a 6ish looking phone, maybe something that is transformative on the 6, as the 7 will probably be.

Whats the point in going from a 5 to a 6 to a 5 when I should be able to go from a 5 to a 6 to a 4 inch 7.

My point is that the iPhone 5S to SE has to be an upgrade to create parity and still cause people to spend $ on the newest 4" to keep them within the cycle. Apple said themselves they're still selling 4" devices, so there is still a market for them and cost conscience folks will be willing to upgrade vs going with a 6S/6S Plus.

LOL. $400 is "cheap" to you? In a world of Android phones that allow you to expand the memory to 32 GB or more and still be under $100 total price, you have a pretty skewed perceptive.

You should have strikethrough'ed the "lower end" portion for a better edit.

To be honest the 2nd gen ID touch is in a way too fast when you using an iPhone.

Ya I have no problem with the Touch ID that is in the 5S, it works quite well. It could be a little bit quicker though. Doesn't the iPhone 6 have the faster Touch ID than the 5S? If the SE had just alittle bit faster Touch ID than the 5S I would be happy with it. Hopefully it does.

Fantastic pricing in the States! Pretty terrible for us Canadians though, we're not getting a fair exchange rate here at all. 64gb should be 650, not 710 :(

Really want one of these. I have been unable to look through this thread, but is it confirmed these devices will have 2GB of ram?

How about €489 and €589 while the Euro is still 10% more worth than the dollar? This annoys me so much! When the Euro was strong they never lowered their prices, but now the Euro fell a bit in worth and they increased the prices right away. There is no reason why we should pay 20% more than the Americans for a phone with an old design that has no flagship model specs as well. Thanks Tim. I guess I am going for a way too large 4.7 inch iPhone 7 this fall... :(

Think apple have really shot them selves in the foot here just with prices, $399 and $499 compared to £359 and £439 and €489 and €589.

I have been waiting for this iPhone for a while and just because of the price difference I will not buy it!

And about the presentation of the iPhone SE... I have never seen a more boring presentation from apple, they are really going down hill on so many levels.

Looking at http://www.apple.com/iphone-se/specs/, there are two models of the iPhoneSE: Model A1662 and Model A1723. Anyone know how that’s breaking down in terms of which carriers get which models, and how that all relates to the “SIM-free” version?

I ask because my wife would like to get an SE now, but we’re hoping to switch from AT&T to Verizon once my iPhone 6 contract expires in September. I’m hoping that she might just be able to buy the SIM-free SE now, use it with her existing AT&T SIM (from her 5S), then swap her carrier over to Verizon when I get a 7+ this fall.

Any insight would be most appreciated!

I will be cross shopping this 5SE 64GB against whatever the latest iPhone model is during Fall 2016, when my handset approaches 3 years old (unless it keeps trucking along).

Yes the iPhone 6 has a better TouchID sensor than the 5s, but it was never called 2nd gen Touch ID.
So I still don't know if this is the (fairly slow) 5s TouchID sensor or the (faster) iPhone 6 TouchID.
