Price is very cheap, $679 AUD vs 929 for a slower iPhone 6 and par speed iPhone 6s starts from 1029, so quite a bargain if you don't mind the screen, however I can never go back to a smaller screen again

lol @ everyone afraid to try a 4.7" phone. Come on... it isn't THAT bad!
You can't use it with one hand. I don't have the extra money for the SE now, but if I had enough I'd be buying it on release day to get back down to a manageable screen size. I'm hoping they update it along with the 7, or at least next Spring if they insist on leaving it without the newest technology when the 7 first comes out.

Really disappointing. They've announced this now to make it look like the SE is current, but when the iPhone 7 is announced it'll instantly be a gen behind. I do not want a small phone that gets the tech leftovers.
Unless it's like when Apple announced mid year that the iPhone was moving to Verizon. Then the next year they updated the phones as usual. I could see that happening. They gave it the 6s guts because that's what's current but in September they could update it along with the 7

According to the compare apple page the se should have equal or better 'in use' battery life as the 6s+ wow

It should offer higher performance than the 6s and 6s+ due to the screen res too

Yes, can anyone confirm which TouchID sensor it uses? It surely isn't the 6s sensor, but is it really the first gen (iPhone 5s) TouchID or (and I hope so) the second gen TouchID from the iPhone 6?
i think iPhone 5S and 6 shared the same TouchID sensor....

I wish it looked more like the 6 models. I already have a 5S and was looking forward to getting a phone that looked a bit different.

I want to know what's the reasoning behind leaving some features off like...

LTE Advanced
Second generation fingerprint scanner
5mp facetime camera

These features seem very basic and a no brainer to add.

According to Apple's compare section the SE does not have the 2nd gen Touch ID. Which is kind of disappointing, I was hoping it would have it.
according to the same section, the SE has the same sensor the iPhone 6 used.

$579, dammit!
Someone else was asking if it has "Touch3D". It does have TouchID.
Not sure about the haptic (3D?) touch though... What's "three-axis gyro"? Maybe that's it?

Apple must be insean to charge nearly 600 dollars on this thing... Plus 13% tax, this thing is way overpriced in Canada.

For customers, I do not care about exchange rate, all I care is how much I have to pay for the thing. At 579 plus 13% tax, I will just go buy myself a Nexus 5X and some great food.

2nd generation sensor was used on 6S and 6S plus... 6 uses first generation sensor...

Exactly, I feel that since they went to all this trouble in updating the 5 to the SE that this is a clear indication the 4" iPhone is here to stay. They will update it with current specs either each year or every other year. They will keep it fresh because there is still a market for smaller form factor phones. It's a brilliant move except for the storage capacity.

Thanks Max (IT). Do you know if the speed of the Touch ID is any faster on the 6 than it was on the 5S or if there was no difference? I am just wondering if the SE's Touch ID would be the same or faster than it is in the 5S that I have now.

I wasn't talking about 3D Touch. I mean that after the 7 is announced the SE will start to be a gen behind. If they wanted a small phone with the latest features they'd just call it the 6 mini or something. Apple is really giving us the middle finger on this.
Well, if they update it in 12 months from now then it won't be too far behind. We can keep fingers crossed that it will also get a bump this Fall when the new iPhone debuts. At this size/price it seems they are trying to bring more into the fold. Keeping a respectable 4" in the line is something I'm glad they are doing. If it sells well then it might cause supply constraints if they also upgrade this alongside the flagships. All in all not a bad option and not too far behind the flagships. Def not a model for those who want the latest and greatest, biggest and best but a terrific value option for many. Way to go Apple on this one!

I'd imagine it's to keep it at a lower price (for the 5MP FaceTime HD camera and 2nd Gen Touch ID) and would the LTE-A modem impair on battery life? Or it might be because some of the markets it's aimed at don't any form of LTE-A yet?

The iPhone SE met all my expectations, and it's a steal at only $399/$499.

I still don't know if I'll be upgrading though. I didn't like the size of my iPhone 6 at first, but I've gotten used to it and even appreciate having more room. It might take some readjusting to back to 4-inches after having had 4.7-inches for the past 1 1/2 years.

I think it will be just the same, if you are using iOS 9.2.1 on your actual iPhone 5S (iOS 9 made the TouchID faster).

Something also...I've had the 6s for about 5 months now and this thing is so fast it's crazy. I can imagine it lasting for years with no problem. That's why I was happy when they said at keynote the SE will be at speeds of the 6s. That means with those specs the SE will last a long time and be super fast and I can see people keeping the SE for 3 or 4 yrs and still working perfectly.

What is with all the hysterics. Put the iPhone 5S and the iPhone SE next to each other, they are essentially the same design one with dull matte effect. It's certainly nothing to be proud of. This should be called iPhone 5S2 and come with the marketing tag "when laziness and profit focus collide".
Do you mean the same distinctive design most people still missing today ? Yeah.

I would prefer Apple make 3 sizes of phone with the same specs, but since Apple Pay is the only feature I wanted that my 5s doesn't have, this will have to do.
On that point I would say this model is as much about Apple maximizing thier investments in R&D and profits as it is about providing a tasty consumer option. Apple has not ammased one of the world's biggest money hordes by throwing prudent business decisions to the wind. No, they are EXTREMELY SHREWD.

Because Apple always leave room to add these features next year. They never give you the whole enchilada.
