Wish Apple would give us a flagship 4" iPhone. Hanging onto my iPhone 5 for another year. :(

This keynote...protruding camera on the iPad? Ridiculous. Starting with 15 minutes of research and health was worthy, but incredibly boring. Only Phil Schiller exuded any appreciable enthusiasm. The Apple Watch is obviously selling badly; no sales figures and a 20% price drop. The iPad has been increased in price by 20%; just what is needed in the face of 8 quarters of plummeting sales. Shares are down post-keynote.

I find the death of Apple painful to watch. All good things come to an end, I guess. I'm grateful to Steve Jobs and all who worked with him for his amazing products.
Only Apple has a massive a group of uh... "Buyers" programmed to believe every bit of hype that comes out of the mouth of this uber wealthy company. Apple chooses how much money they want, devotees pay it. Apple's power is endless.

Well it's time to say goodbye to my beloved 5s. Beside it just being a great smartphone period, it's basically the best entry level smartphone ever made. The best smartphone for anyone new to smartphones could ever get.

I bought my iPhone 6 the day it was released, upgrading from a 5. I really miss the smaller form factor and am very happy Apple is giving us this option. With that said, I'll be holding onto my 6 at least until the 2 year mark next fall, or until the next iteration of the 4" SE.

iPhone 7 SE this fall along with the 7 and 7 Plus?

What do you guys think? Should I wait?

I made the jump from a 4s to the 6 and I've hoped for a smaller updated device ever since. I think the 5s was a classic design and I'm glad they chose this phone model for the SE. I am looking forward to updating. While it doesn't have every bell and whistle as the current 6s, I'm easy to please and I'm sure the SE will serve my needs well. I'm excited about this smaller phone.

But even apps are getting larger all the time and chewing up space. A lot of people would be fine with 32GB, but if that was standard, less people would upgrade, less revenue for Apple.

On the other hand, better user-experience... user evangelism, more brand loyalty, more likely to recommend to friends, feeling you really got a premium product, etc.

Their trading their famous user-experience for cheap marketing tactics to make a quick extra few bucks. :(

Why do I need to care about how forigen currency work? I only care about price over here... And 600 dollars for a phone that uses 4 years old desgin and subpar specification is over the top.

Um, OK. Have you ever shopped both sides of the boarder? When I pay my web hosting bill (US based), it costs me a lot more than what it says in USD, because of the exchange rate. That's just how it works. Most products are priced based on some countries currency, which is then adjusted for other markets, based on the exchange rate. I'm not sure what you're not getting about that.

But, given your next statement, you don't seem so sharp at following stuff, I guess. In fact, I'd say troll, but since you asked me directly... what is 4-years old about it? Heck, a Porsche 911 still has roughly the same design as it did decades ago, and cost more money.

If you're trying to disagree with me, you're failing miserably. ... It's still a premium handset by any metric ... I know someone who bought one for 10 -- yes $10, new.

Sorry about that, I misunderstood. :) Yes, I did fail miserably, since we seem to agree. Some of us are a bit disappointed that it wasn't a true premium (as in 4" 6s) model, but you're right that it's not a budget phone.

re: $10 device - Yea, I think back in the day (maybe still?) you'd just about get Androids in cereal boxes as the toy, heh. (Which explains the market-share.) The first Android tablet I played with was one given to a friend when he helped fix a guy's PS3 as 'payment'. The guy got it for signing up for cable TV, I think. It ended up in a shoebox of junk, but at least we got to play with one for a bit early on. (Which also explains why when you look at actual web stats, or ad revenue, etc. Android is a fraction of iOS... lots o devices, many less in actual use.)

Yes and in addition to that the GPU, CPU speed is identical, so if the CPU performance is the same you would expect it to the exact same CPU and RAM and M9 chip

I sure hope so! But, if it were 1GB, would't they still claim the same speed? The RAM would impact some benchmarks, but the actual speed could be the same.

Spot on, doubt they would go back with 1GB now

That said, they're selling a 16GB storage model. One would hope everything going forward is 2GB, but this is Apple we're talking about here. I'm a bit nervous because this is one of those 'seems too good to be true' product releases... I'm waiting for the catch. :)

...but also keeping the astonishing design that originated from the legendary iPhone 4. Wow. My only complaint about Apple at the moment is iOS. Too much minimalism. The UI is almost soulless compared to the old design. They just need to add some skeuomorphism in there to make it more vivid.

Just a reminder: firing Scott Forstall and making Jony Ive the SVP (now Chief Design Officer) in UI design was probably one of the biggest mistakes at Apple since Sculley.

For sure! iOS took some steps forward in terms of features, but a few back in terms of UI/UX. Either Ive doesn't know what the *$(#@ he's doing in terms of UI, or after Forstall, they just hired a bunch of UI newbies out of design school. It's kind of a train wreck, but at least it's in better shape than OS X! The hardware is still awesome, the software needs a LOT of work.

The specs just posted for internet usage on the SE are much greater #'s, I mean come on 13 hours on LTE that is 5 hours more on the SE battery, these are amazing figures for the SE.

Remember that the A9 is quite a bit more power efficient, WHILE being far faster as well. I'm surprised it's more, though. I was expecting maybe 5-10% less batter life based on a comparison of the original battery size of the 5s (or possibly a slightly underclocked CPU, etc.).

Can you name anything that is exactly the same between the the 5s and the SE besides the two having the same screen size?

I'm assuming your eyes work cause aesthetically it looks exactly the same. I never said it was exactly the same from an internal standpoint. It is essentially the same phone with a few upgraded improvements. But it's a two year old design and if you can't see that I'd make an opthamology appointment asap!

So, if they had also bothered to upgrade the Touch ID sensor to the latest version and included 3D Touch, this might have been a good phone. 9 months ago. Now, it's just a partially updated 5S three months away from being obsolete.
This is NOT what the 4" iPhone market is waiting for! Not even a nice try on this one Tim. This is really simple - just make a 4" iPhone 7 this year, a 4" iPhone 8 next year, a 4" iPhone 9 the year after that, and so on.

well what a let down, even more embarrassing if it fails to capture the market, and if you buy one, people would still call it iPhone 5s

iPhone 6 is my first iPhone, but I don't like how tall and wide it is. I do like the thin design and curved edges. I wish I could have a hybrid of the iPhone SE and iPhone 6. Thin and curved like the 6, but smaller screen like the SE. Pocket portability is one of my #1 priorities.

I am really impressed. Apple actually did look back and thought about its 4-inch iPhone customers and it's not only adding a new 4-inch iPhone to their product line, but also keeping the astonishing design that originated from the legendary iPhone 4. Anyway, kudos to Apple for now. One step at a time.

Yep. Ive has proven that he doesn't know squat about UI design and Cook thinks a recycling robot is innovate or that anyone cares. Apple really needs to bring Forstall back and let him undo all the damage done to the UI by Ive.

I'm assuming your eyes work cause aesthetically it looks exactly the same. I never said it was exactly the same from an internal standpoint.

So, what's not to like then? Back to better industrial design. Update most of the internals to the latest and greatest. All at a significantly reduced price.

Well, no. It isn't a true 4" 6s, which is a bit of a bummer. But, it's also hundreds less in cost. So, they kind of split the difference, which is what I figured they'd do. So, given what I *thought* was going to happen, I'm impressed. And, *IF* it has 2GB or RAM, it's a perfectly acceptable 4" model, given the pricing. So, while I'm not as happy as I could be, I'm pretty pleased with it. It's not my dream, but it will do the job just fine! (I was pretty worried they might make a 6c.)

well what a let down, even more embarrassing if it fails to capture the market, and if you buy one, people would still call it iPhone 5s

It's not going to fail to capture the market, I can guarantee that. And, who cares if someone thinks it's a 5s. Seriously?

You are a drama queen.
The death of Apple...yeah sure. I read that for years now from people like you who obviously have no clue how capitalism works and which limits it sets.
Except the iPhone 4 all really good products only came out once Steve Jobs was out. He is incredibly overrated.

3D Touch sucks. Thank good they cut it.

Yeah and it would be awful. Who wants only one size of iPhone to pick from?

Some things Steve did were not good.

Remember Steve did that to save the company when Apple was about 30 days from declaring bankruptcy. Presently Apple has more loose change in there office couches than most small countries have money.

Yes, they are essentially the same phone inside...

Just with different processors.

and co-processors

...and cameras modules
...and flash units.
..
And LTE chipsets.
..
And batteries.

Curious: Are you going to post pics of your pre-release iPhone SE teardown?
I assume you have some source for this info they are the same phone inside since no one outside Apple and their suppliers has seen the inside of one yet. Or are you just making assumptions?

I'm sorry but where did I say the 5S and the SE were the same inside? I said aesthetically it looks the same! Yes it is essentially the same phone (externally) with a few upgraded improvements (internally)! My point was it looks exactly the same as the 5S, which it does! Make that opthamologist appointment soon bro!

It sounds like a fantastic phone for those of us who were holding out against larger form factors. More surprisingly, it's also a very reasonable price (in Apple terms). I think iPhone 6 and to a lesser extent 6+ sales are going to be hit hard between now and the release of the 7.

If they'd shoehorned all that A9 goodness into a 5c case and given us the 6c I'd have thought I'd died and gone to iPhone heaven.

I was hoping that Apple being the design conscious company that they are would give us something a little different than a two year old design but rather give us something more along the lines of a combo of the 5S and 6S externally. Not hey guys, remember that phone from two years ago? Well we had a surplus of front display panels from the 5S so the phone won't have force touch and the front camera will still be 1.2 megapixels.... And oh yeah the phone will look exactly the same. Don't get me wrong it was a great design for its time and I'm not attacking anyone who likes the design (SeaFox I'm looking at you lol) but to me it just seems design wise lazy to offer a phone with a design from two years ago. I liked the design when I had the phone in 2014 but where's the design innovation I'm expecting from Apple. Haters commence!!!

Well, back at post 566...

People re still going on about how this is a renamed 5/5s... I don;t even know how to respond to this...

Cause it essentially is....

A "renamed 5S" would have few differences (internal or external) with the original. And you agreed with them.

Different backplates, different Apple logo treatment, different edge styling treatments for the outside.
They are similar in that they are round-cornered rectangles with a single home button featuring Touch ID -- like every other iPhone that's been made since then.

Yes it is essentially the same phone (externally) with a few upgraded improvements (internally)!

You realize the upgraded component list is like 75% of the internals of the phone? No teardown has been done yet, but I imagine the RAM and flash chips are faster varieties, too.

Make that opthamologist appointment soon bro!

You may be right on that one. I'm looking and looking in the yellow pages, and I can't find "opthamologist" at all.
By the way, I hear the iPhone SE is going to have a great spellchecker.

Damn you got me I'm sorry "ophthalmologist".... Kudos on your perfect spelling, sorry about your eyesight though. I'm not attacking the design, just the use of the same design so you can now climb off my nuts. You wanna think it's a completely different designed phone? Go right ahead. It is to me... To me mind you, essentially the same designed phone. I never said there weren't internal changes but externally it does looks the same... You have a fine evening now.
