Use a ethernet cable. It is the same idea, you just need to connect to the other machine. Sorry if it is harder for you guys, really. I think the firewire port isn't DEAD it just isn't a strong force in the market anymore.

Does migration work over ethernet?

-Mini DisplayPort - This is no difference in function from on the old Macbook DVI video ports. Now the old cables don't work on the new Macbook.
There's a huge one actually: the 13" MacBook now supports 30" screens (Dell's 3008 or Apple's 30" ACD).
AND THERE NOW CHARGING £15 FOR THE APPLE REMOTE!
Welcome to 6 months ago at least, that one's not new.
Anyone else notice that the Macbook 2.0ghz says it has a backlit keyboard, but the Macbook page says it doesn't and only the 2.4 does ???
Doesn't on the french apple store.
well of course there will be, that way the millions of people who don't have this connector on their laptops will now have to pay even more to use this thing.
Wat? We're in the AL macbooks thread here, not the screen thread, all laptops have mini-displayport by definition.
DisplayPort is supposed to be an alternative to HDMI....however seeing as everything uses HDMI these days and few if any use displayport at this point...I question this move by apple...
HDMI IS NOT ABLE TO DRIVE THE 30" CINEMA DISPLAY FOR HELL'S SAKE
And it's a piece of **** connector and standard too, DisplayPort is far superior to it. And you can already find DisplayPort -> HDMI adaptors.

....whats wrong with your blackbook?

Not anything right now, I was thinking of the better graphics for Snow Leopard, but nothing more...I will have had this for two years this Christmas and it is going strong, I have replaced the hard drive once with a bigger model, and I might do that again...I will be using this one for at least another year...to be honest, I just got caught up in the hype of an impending redesign. I don't need a new computer yet and honestly, I am really not that upset, because I still love this one...thanks for this question...you made me think;)

Same goes with people who want to use the new display, they too will either have to buy a new macbook or buy the adapter. Well Displayport doesnt cost anything to license, so expect to see EVERYONE jumping on it. Just give it time and I guarentee it will be huge.

Can you upgrade the RAM yourself?
Since it was easy as pie to upgrade the RAM on the previous models, i sure hope it still is. Just wait for iFixit taking them apart and you'll know for sure ;)

It already has a lot of industry support:
AMD, Analogix, Apple, ASRock, ASUSTeK,Dell, Genesis Microchip, Hewlett-Packard, Hosiden Corporation, Intel, Integrated Device Technology, JAE, Lenovo, Luxtera, Molex, NVIDIA, NXP Semiconductors, Palit Microsystems Palit, Parade Technologies, Philips, Quantum Data, Samsung, Sparkle, Texas Instruments, and Tyco Electronics.
and both 24" and 30" Dell models for 2008 accept it as an input already. So I'd also expect it to become very popular very fast.

I hope you guys realize that inventing a whole new way to build laptops and milling them out of a solid block of aluminum and glass for the display actually costs money. You are paying extra for the durability and the materials.

np.

I still dont understand the "my MB is a year old, time for the new one!" thinking. The only reason I'm getting the new one is because it will be my first mac :D and I need time to save up the money. Fits my needs like a glove, better actually.

How does that not make sense. Average consumer, doesnt know FW, why bother putting it there to please the few when the many wont care. Its not trying to gain usb users (i wasnt aware that was a classification of person). Its simply getting rid of a component your average consumer doesnt care about. For anyone that cares enough to actually need FW , the Pro is for you. That means more money for apple.

What part doesnt make sense? Oh you werent talking business sense?;)

Except these 'Average consumers' would be the ones most hurt when they try to plug in any FW, iLink, call it what you will camcorder that they got on sale at some electronics store, thinking it will work seamlessly with iMovie, only to realise
"Sh*t it just don't work"

No one cares when their products are built well, they only seem to give a damn when there NOT built well.

Obviously no one has a clear idea of availability of illuminated keyboard in $1299 Macbook.

On product information page it says;

"... An illuminated keyboard, a popular feature of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, now comes standard on the 2.4GHz MacBook model. So when you’re in low-light settings such as airports or lecture halls, you can always see what you’re typing. It’s a luminous feature for anyone on the go."

However when I attempt to purchase 2.0GHz Macbook at online store, it says;

Keyboard and Documentation
Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide

So, is illimunated keyboard something different than backlit keyboard, or are they same and available in both Macbook models?

Anyone has any idea?

Your average consumer is gonna see that theres no usb and go WTF? first.

when you go to the apple store you have the option to add a backlit keyboard to the 2.0ghz version

Editguy, I may have to learn Premiere Pro. I've been Mac for a long time, I really love it, but my 2001 tiPb is dying now. And I can't edit HD on it. So I've been waiting for today for a MBPro

But with the glossy only screen... and lo-res, I'm not jumping. And I had hoped for blu-ray.

So as much as I love FCP, I may be having to learn Premiere Pro. I like having a laptop instead of a tower as it's less space and I can travel with it.

It's an easy transition. PP is very similar to Final cut, so if you've used it it's not a very steep learning curve. One of the advantages to Premiere is that it integrates so well with Photoshop and After Effects. I use the CS3 programs on an Asus laptop with Vista and it's a nice setup. I was ready to upgrade my Mac, but since I only use Final Cut for teaching there's no way I can justify the expense.

only in the US store is that true. in every other country, keyboard is either not even an option (no language selection for manual) or it is just labeled as "keyboard" (not "backlit keyboard"). i'm guessing it's a bug that will be changed soon. sucks.

The prospect of a lower priced MacBook actually had me interested in switching to a Mac... Even if the new redesigned MacBooks were still the same price of $1099, I would consider it and save up for it.

But $1299? No, thank you. I can get a much better Dell for that price.

And the EDU discount lowered to $50? What were they thinking?

There is no way I'll switch to Mac now.

$1299 laptop and only 160 GB harddrive, no backlit keyboard, etc?

What is Apple thinking? People have LESS money now.. not more.

Just watched the video on the apple site. They really are beautiful. I think they are overpriced but the are really pretty.

So I will have to buy some sort of stinky card reader to get simple photos onto a mac?!

Not really. Why don't you get your free printer with the computer that contains a card reader? You do get that $100 rebate for a reason.

Then why do it in a time of economic downturn? And, come on, glossy glass displays are common on cheap PC laptops, so they can't be very expensive.
