So when I search online for video cameras, why do I find more with USB interfaces than firewire? There only seem to be more FW format with mini DV, and even some of those are USB.

Because, for most camcorders with USB, the USB connection is for transferring stills. Or, they are the stupid consumer hard drive cameras (and only consumers with no video knowledge would buy them) that only work with their proprietary capture software. No professional Non Linear Editor, such as Final Cut,can, or likely ever will, have the ability to capture through USB. Nor can iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. Firewire and firewire only

on first impression... it looks less like a mac and more like everything else. It very specifically reminds me of a Vaio.

Hm..disappointed, but...doesnt mean I still wont buy one!!!

Just curious for those mac owners right now...How useful/much do you like the backlit keyboard? I am picky about certain features...meaning the more the better. And while I'd go for the $1299 because I dont need the 0.2Ghz or 90GB more HD in the $1599 models, I'm considering it because of the darn backlit keyboard!!!!

I am using this laptop basically only for moving around and moderate design. I have a BEAST, 9 pound-dell that stays at home :)

Thanks! Any help would be great!

Everyone knows a 17" MBP with the new design is coming, but I also strongly suspect that a new smaller MBM (Macbook Mini?) is also in the works for the $1000-1200 and cheaper pricepoint. This would be just like the MB but offer 10" screen and smaller size, and maybe drop the ethernet port also.

Just called the apple store the lady told me they don't have the new Macbooks nor do they know when they will be getting them :(

I spoke to multiple other apple stores that said they were shipping today, and they would be in the store tomorrow or the next few days...But I am still confused...Why does this article state that they aren't shipping until october??? ANYONE KNOW?

I think the new MB got an awesome update.

The new screen alone is a biggie as the old MB's screen sucked.

Throw in the aluminum body, glass trackpad, 1/2 lb less weight and backlight keyboard, faster gpu and its a nobrainer.

Likely looking refurb

-The removal of FW in MacBooks is huge. Major performance hit, USB 2.0 is a major step down.
All my external hard drives are at least dual, and the USB 2.0 option, when used, is just horrible compared to the FW400. Only reason I am stuck using USB 2.0 now is because my Seagate FreeAgent's FW module just died, so I swapped in the USB module.

I was in the market because my 2007 MB has liquid damage to the screen. Tolerable, but annoying. So I was thinking, $300 for new screen, or another 700 for a newer laptop to boot, and just retire the MB to be an iTunes server or something.

If anything now, i am either back to replacing the screen....or looking at an MBP from the refurb section shortly.

If there was firewire on the new macbooks (new, not the white one), then I'd be more inclined.

I will still look forward to benchmarks done by some independent sites, to see what kind of benefit the new chipset actually yields. I could see how, theoretically, the new design with a "slower" CPU will do better....but then why not just leave in the current speeds, for even better gains.

I was honestly sorta thinking the lower speeds could indicate quad core.

It's actually a 0.4 GHz difference. I'm only getting the higher end because you save 100 rather than 50 on the lower end MB with the ed pricing. Plus, I don't have to upgrade the HDD as 250 is sufficient for me standard rather than 160. The backlight is a nice touch when I will use the thing in bed.

Though this will be my first notebook so I don't know how useful the backlight is.

What the ****

That's ridiculous. They were saying the prices would be going down.
UK store, the OLD macbook has been put up £20!
The new ones start at £949. The American rate when converted is £743.
Why is it £200 more? I know prices in the UK are normally a little higher, but it seems to me these macs are £100 too much, anyone else agree?\

I also can't get to the education discount screen, there's no continue button after I choose my uni!

why is the online store still down? And why wont my local apple store give me an idea of when these will be in stock?

Ok, Design looks cool but guess what?

Australians get screwed by the US again

PLastic Fantastic is 200 more
Other models 400 to 600 more

To mirror what a previous poster said
'is it news to apple that there is a global recession?'

Actually, the trend with the new camcorders is that USB can transfer video. Especially with the HDD and AVCHD ones.

Joshua.

EDIT: But you pretty much said that. I agree. Prosumer/Pro cameras = FW.

Don't hold your breath for such a mini Macbook. It would seriously cannibalize sales for the Macbook Air, so, unfortunately, I highly doubt Apple will come out with a smaller form factor for the Macbook.

This is atrocious.

I can't believe how scandalous Apple can be here in the UK! The pricing is ridiculous.

As a 14 year old with a single mum, I think www.dell.com is my answer, as much as I really don't want another Windows computer. What can I do? It's just too expensive.

I am really impressed with this new update, it has everything I wanted. I'm sold. When will they be available? I want to order online, but want to play with one in the store first of course.

Anyone care to break it to Digidesign that their Firewire interfaces will be obsolete soon? Considering the headache they had getting Pro Tools LE up to speed with Leopard, I'm sure there are people at the Digi HQ wishing slow, painful death on Apple.

I want to say to the people complaining about USB:

Don't buy cheap equipment. USB 2.0 speed is dictated by the quality of the controller chips in the device. If you buy quality equipment then there is no reason it will be slower. In fact, it SHOULD be faster.

Now on to more important things.

I'm sitting here just laughing at the prices. Seriously. $1299 for a 2GHz Core 2 Duo? What happened to all of those arguments that Apple never skimps on the processor speed? rofl $1299 for INTEGRATED GRAPHICS STILL!? And its a "system on a chip" so on top of the usual northbridge functionality the IGP has, it has to deal with all of the other functions WHILE dealing with graphics! Hilarious!

My now 1 year old and $500 cheaper after taxes HP is not only STILL faster than the current MacBook, but it includes Firewire! And more connectivity options.

Seriously Apple, if you're going to drop Firewire than drop that stupid mini-display port too and just use HDMI.

The MacBooks and MacBook Pros look like they took HP's LCDs they've had for over a year now and glued them on to their systems.

Well ive never had a apple and im now wondering if I want to get one.
But in my good old windows laptops there were cardreaders and its damn easy to get my photos into the computer in a few secs without having to bring any cables or drain my camera batteries while uploading.

Reading what card format? there are too many of them, I know that some laptops have multi-card reading capabilities, but I don't know many people using them. Get an external card reader, cost close to nothing. Franky, your problem is a no problem, there are way more serious flaws with the new macbooks.

But maybe Apple is trying to help people in these tough times, tempt less people to go buy a new laptop.

I was about to get a MB but with no FW, I'm not interested. Which laptops are good candidates for a hackingtosh treatment?

Apple's spec pages say the MacBook 2.4 has backlit but not the 2.0. But, the store says they both have it.

Also, does anyone know if the 2.0 MB is faster than the previous 2.2? Like is it a better processor? And is the 2.4 GHZ processor in the 1599 MB better than the processor in the previous cheaper 2.4 MBs. Are these Montevina?

I want you to show me all these USB camcorders. They don't exist.

So when I go to best buy or whatever and they list a bunch of camcorders with USB and no FW, what are those?

funny how the stock price declined as the event progressed.

Graphic2.png

Except that the dow and many other stocks followed the same pattern, makes it hard to blame apple.

So I will have to buy some sort of stinky card reader to get simple photos onto a mac?!

Or just hook up your camera. I've never understood why anyone would want a card reader for photos.
