ALL video cameras (mini-DV, hard drive based, flash memory based, and even the old Digital-8 camcorders) are firewire-only.

So when I search online for video cameras, why do I find more with USB interfaces than firewire? There only seem to be more FW format with mini DV, and even some of those are USB.

I just find it ironic that when you spec out the Macbook, you have the option to buy Final Cut Express.

I actually haven't look at new DV recorders these days but I guess with the move to non-tape media, it's not really an issue anymore?

The loss of firewire is sad on the 13" laptops. Video editing isn't really fun on a small laptop so few video people would go for the 13". But the audio guys that swear on their 12" powerbooks for stage applications and on-the-go recording with external hardware need Firewire. 15" just isn't mobile as 13". So either Apple will have to add a firewire 400 due to popular demand or introduce a 12" Macbook pro.

Your average consumer is gonna see that theres no usb and go WTF? first.

This hypothetical average consumer may not know the difference between the mini iLink and the mini USB connectors though.

BTW I'm guessing the person in question is a complete tard, cause you'd have to be one to buy the new MB

OK below the belt, but I'm mad as hell and not gonna take any more :p

Fw...

Not to be whiny bitch number 5,000,000 but... the lack of firewire on the macbook is just plain stupid. A lot of people with DV camcorders are going to be affected, though admittedly, newer, solid state camcorders are more popular. However i think it will affect enough people for it to bite apple in the ass, whether it really is an issue or just people like me whining.

Ach well, I'm sure apple will have made the right choice, they usually do. Remember no FDD?

Fun times!

Aly

I don't normally slam Apple products, but I am PISSED at the UK prices of the new ones. Haven't seen the Academic discounts yet but still not going to be worth buying one yet.

I think they look awsome machines but Apple are really going to lose a lot of sales over here with this one.

Quick trip to the States anyone???

I would have gone for a new MacBook but I'm disappointed by the lack of firewire since I have firewire hard drives, and firewire audio interfaces.

I guess I'll be hanging onto my Rev A MacBook for a while longer. :(

The real reason for me to go FW is for the HDD speed. It's much quicker in my experience, especially since the FW is on a seperate BUS from my other USB drive.

I'd not get this MB because of the missing FW.

So I will have to buy some sort of stinky card reader to get simple photos onto a mac?!

Nah just use USB or Firewire straight from the camera ,oh ,wait ......

np.

I still dont understand the "my MB is a year old, time for the new one!" thinking. The only reason I'm getting the new one is because it will be my first mac :D and I need time to save up the money. Fits my needs like a glove, better actually.

That would be the school of thought that supposes that if you sell your machine before it's a year old , it loses less money value and enables one to buy a newer model without taking to much of a hit in the wallet ;)

Anyone find decent prices for these DDR3 chips? Best I've seen is

Crucial 2X2GB for 141.99.

Apple will upgrade you from 2 to 4 for 135 in the ed store at least. I may wait for OWC and do their RAM turn in rebate when they come out with this new RAM.

yes its backlit i just checked the configuration it states backlit english keyboard :D sweet!

There should be some kind of mistake because as C6toC9 wrote, aside from U.S. Apple Store, all other stores sell 2.0GHz Macbook without backlit keyboard.

They will probably fix the U.S. Apple Store shortly, which really sucks.

Glad you and I are in agreement over what your average consumer is when it comes to technology.:p

So bring a USB cable and hook it up to the camera. The notebooks have never had the SD card readers. Why start now?

Well ive never had a apple and im now wondering if I want to get one.
But in my good old windows laptops there were cardreaders and its damn easy to get my photos into the computer in a few secs without having to bring any cables or drain my camera batteries while uploading.

Just got off the line in the UK to the apple store.

Macbook pro 2.4Ghz £1399.00 with discount £1189.10. Apple care with discount £58.75
Macbook 2.4Ghz £1149.00 with discount £988.18. Apple care with discount £47.00

Plane , boat , oh don't tell me.... I have to walk it again .

Definitely sounds like a plan to me , the prices are not what I expected at all (to say the least) is it me or are they all actually MORE expensive than they where ??

Ok so I needed at new, smaller MB for school. But this new MacBook is way too expensive!! And I wanted to have the backlit keyboard like my MBP, but we need to take the 2.4 to have it!! This is so unfair!! Isn't the 2.0 enough expensive to have the backlit keyboard!!

And now I'm learning on this forum that they decreased the student discount!!! That is so unfair!!

As of now, I REALLY HATE APPLE!!!

How could they make their products even more expensive. It's impossible!
+ I'm not sure if I like the new Design. Beautiful on the iMac, not so on notebooks. They should have keep the aluminum look around the screen and give us the option of white (like iMac) or black keyboard chicklets. Apple is just so much stuck on black this time around!!

Apple store's 4GB option is not bad at all unlike before.I would buy it with 4GB.
