Just saw this on AppleInsider:

Panasonic and JVC sell cameras with USB ports. It seems Sony is the last hold out.

High Def on these consumer cams is highly compressed with a data rate around 25Mpbs and don't come close to 400Mbps."

And another one:

My last video camera and my current HD video camera (Sony HD SR11) uses USB 2.0 to import to a computer. Do they make FireWire video cameras anymore? Come to think of it, They haven't used firewire to tranfer to an iPod in like 500 years I think."

So, although still disappointing, the lack of FW is not the end of the world. And please...NOBODY should carry extra HDs with their notebooks...this is for desktops like my iMac.

FACT: Apple knows when to phase out technologies...and it creates a new demand for what supersedes them.
I suppose we should expect an iMovie update that enables transfers from USB soon?

EDIT: Looks like Apple does support it for some camcorders already. If you have a tape based unit you are screwed. Period. <shrug> sorry :(

Everyone shut up and get over it. Everyone complained when the new iMac's came out... people got over it. No firewire? Who cares? The price probably would've been $1399 base instead of $1299. Don't judge until you see and use it in person.

Sure does look nice. Might sell my white MacBook and pick one up.

Very disappointed. UK consumers have been completely shafted. I was ready with credit card in hand to buy a MacBook at £499. I would of still come in at £599. Heck I would of even stretched to £699. But £949?! WTF, I'm getting an Eeee PC and building a hackintosh. Will it be worth the hassle? At about £700 you better freaking believe it. If they had dropped the price of the old white MacBooks they might of just recouped some support but this takes the p***.
:mad::mad::mad:

+1 but I'm waiting for the first couple of revisions to get the kinks out

what a joke

we are still getting the education discount of $150 here in Aus but the prices are way way way to expensive!

I was considering a low-end MBP but for AUD$3,200, thats outrageous!! I'm now looking at the 2.4 MB but thats still AUD$2,399 after education discount, I mean come on, how are you supposed to entice people to buy with crazy prices like that!

Yesterday you could have bought a 2.4 Blackbook for AUD$2,099!!

I'm seriously considering hanging on to my Blackbook for a few more months now and seeing if the prices are gonna change.

Not happy at all.....

I just bought a MacBook

I got the white 2.4 for 1049 from the refurb store. I was hoping that the new releases would be compelling but for someone who really doesn't care about the video enhancements, the price to get a new Macbook 2.4 was just too high.

Good point. I just did it. Thanks Apple for helping me be frugal.

People,

I'm new, long time mac user, but have been reading for awhile. If you really want to see your complaints go to good use, and want do see change, then go here (someone else already suggested, but nothing really was done):

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html

Make an official complaint, and I can promise you that if enough of us do it, apple will listen - and HOPEFULLY change prices and problems!

Please please please do it! Complain about whatever you want - just make sure you include the crappy prices!

Thanks!

look, i know everybody is freaking out about the cost of these new macbooks, but when you break it down, theyre actually a better value than pcs. look at the specs on the $1500 (with education discount) macbook:
2.4ghz processor with 1066mhz FSB
250GB HD
2-4 GB RAM (dont buy extra RAM from apple, HUGE ripoff)
NVIDA 9400M integrated graphics
high-res LED display
best OS
sturdier construction (supposedly)

go to dells website and build a laptop with those same specs and you will end up with something costing around $1600-$1800. dual 2.4ghz processors are top-notch and that 1066mhz FSB on a mac is actually a better indicator of real-world computing speed than is the ghz, and although you can get dual core 2.4ghz pcs, they dont have that same 1066mhz FSB- not for this price range, anyway. when you factor in that macs run vista faster than pcs, the resistance to viruses, and the mac reliability (im typing this on a 2003 ibook G4 that hasnt been sick a day in its life), the new macbook is hands down the best option and a great value.

-note: unless you need FW. personally, i dont own a single FW periph.

You're missing the point. Not everyone is looking to shell out $1500 + on a notebook of that size. Some of us just need an affordable solution that at the VERY LEAST has a non glossy screen and firewire. The MB doesn't deliver this time around. And as for the Dell comment, yes, they DO have notebooks with the stuff the MB is missing for 1/3 of the price.

And it's so awesome how you don't own a single Firewire peripheral. Don't care. Lots of us DO!

Blech! Enough. I'm gonna go play with my iPod Touch now....*sulks*

And hope no one shows them the freaking price cuts on yesterday's models...
Seen the Apple Refurbs? Now thats a price cut!
The funniest thing is: we're sooooooooo spoiled. I've never seen a desktop or portable PC at work with a SINGLE FW port...go figure...
Funny, in '03, my job gave me a Presario with firewire, albeit 4 pin, and a 2.4ghz P4, that only cost $1149 at the time, still going strong though, as a backup when I need to run Windows which is not too often. Did I mention my job was repossession? Didn't even really need a computer for that. Still, I have not had a computer without firewire in this millenium.

I shut my MacBook 2.4GHz down after the announcement and took it out for a beer.

This has been the first Apple update that has made me love the older version of MacBook more than the new one.

Pure white beauty, keeps my precious FW, and it still smells terrific!

Cheers Apple, you don't get more of my money quite yet.
Praise be to my Penryn MBP. Will continue to comfort me many a night and I have no regrets even though it is no longer lastest and greatest.

See my previous post. Yes both come with backlit keyboards.
If thats is true I may pickup one once they hit the refurb. Then I can still be a true fanboy by having at least one of the current gens. Besides firewire, the Macbook updates seem pretty good, Macbook Pro seems a little of a letdown. But in all truth, the only thing I was waiting for was new products because I have an unhealthy obsession with Apple, like most here.

Life goes on, A fine update, if for nothing else because it leaves much room for what we really want, when our 07's and early 08's actually do need to be replaced, for reasons other than GPU's.

Just ordered a MacBook. 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, with AppleCare all for the low low price of $1371.74 including tax.

Sounds like quite a bargain to me.

ps - It also has firewire (BlackBook) gotta love the refurb store.

So when I go to best buy or whatever and they list a bunch of camcorders with USB and no FW, what are those?
.

They are cheap hard disk drive or dvd camcorders. No one that wants to edit video would buy one. They are sold to consumers that are not knowledgeable. They use proprietary capture software and the files have to be converted to be used in Final Cut or iMovie or any other NLE. All Video editing programs capture through firewire and no professional video program will ever offer USB capture. Firewire is the standard transfer protocol for video. As I stated before, I'm convinced apple eliminated the firewire port to keep people from being able to use all of the Final Cut Studio on the Macbook with the new graphics card. There is no other reason that makes any sense whatsoever. They want to force creative professionals to buy a MBP. What they may do is force some to look at mving to a different platform. It's ironic that Apple is removing firewire at a time when so many entry level PC laptops include it as standard equipment. And for those that say that firewire is dying, it's alive and well and in use every day.

Fool,

I'm not complaining about the new feature set, in fact there seems to be some nifty features in the new macbooks, granted the British and others have been raped by the prices. But again the lack of firewire is gonna kill so many sales to those who can't afford the MBP, and that's from consumers who've invested in FW gear, to professionals to educational markets.

All those consumers with DV gear, thinking about a cheap mac, oops can't or I'll have to get a new camera, looks like Vista, damn.

Say are all the educational facilities that teach Final Cut pro gonna upgrade their current FW decks and or Cameras, or are they gonna think about switching platform and telling all those students who don't have the money for MBPs to maybe get PCs and use some other software, same with Audio institutions.

It's stuff like this that could hurt Apple in years to come, pricing themselves out the market, especially the creative and educational markets, two of their most loyal and strongest proponents.

so does the 2ghz macbook has backlit or not? just an fyi in the us store it says it does but on the uk or de stores it doesn't. what gives

you know what it doesn't have ?

1066 FSB
DDR3 1066 memory
The better NVidia video.
Backlit LED display
Backlit keyboard.

more usbs

well, having more usb ports is always helpful. Im sitting at starbucks and updating my website. Fist usb port is using a usb wificard. But becasue the usb ports are so close to each other I cant access the second usb port. I want another usb port by the dvd drive so I could plug in my Ipod to charge and load with new movies.Usb hubs dont work with wifi cards. Anyhow, how hard is it to put in another usb port and a firewire(never use it but others do).

The new macbooks are eyecandy. That new screen looks like my ipod touch but way bigger. I can just see people coming over while your sipping your coffee and sticking their fingers on it and asking if this is a macbook touch.

backlit keyboard

anyone know if there is a mod that can be done to the older macbook to get that backlit keyboard?

this hasn't been mentioned as far as i have read. the functionality of the depressable trackpad is questionable to me. what if you want to highlight lots of text or click and drag where you have to reset your finger on the trackpad to cover the length of the screen?

The only room for griping IMO is the lack of FW, and if you're really using FW for what FW is good for then you're in Pro, not consumer territory.

So, backing up data to a firewire harddrive, using iMovie with a firewire camcorder, and using GarageBand with a firewire audio interface puts you in 'pro' category? What kool aid have you been drinking...

As a Broadcast TV teacher I will now be recommending that my students get a PC laptop and Premiere Pro. I also recommend that they buy camcorders with firewire (there are still plenty of them available. And there's no way we will capture through USB through proprietary software and then have to go through a conversion process to use it in an editor. And if iMovie offers USB capture, we wouldn't use it because we don't teach iMovie. We teach professional editing softwares. I think apple may be damaging themselves in the educational market if this is a trend.
