Most PCs don't even know what FW is, while we are here complaining that OUR base model notebook doesn't have it now...:

Sorry to tell you but most PC laptops have firewire, it's only the real low-end that are without it.

And also an PCMCIA or Expresscard slot.

But Macs are for professionals and they do not need professional features according to Mr Jobs.

Wow!

The new 15" Actually has 2 graphics cards in it. The integrated 9400M is less powerful than the 8600M GT and it steals its memory from the main 2GB/4GB of RAM - but it is more efficient, so if you are just surfing the web, it will use this chip and get up to an hour more battery life. There is also a new 9600M GT with 256 or 512MB of its own dedicated memory in there too that will boost performance at the cost of battery life.

Syclone, you are the man! I would never have pieced that info together. I'm not up on the video card details.

That's pretty interesting that the integrated 9400M is less powerful. But I don't use the notebook for gaming anyway so it's hardly an issue.

Bit on a 15" refurb. Thanks for your comment!!! ;)

sticking with my signature, i was thinking black refurb, but i'd rather hang on to my money and wait for a decent price tag on the new macbooks, when my pb12 eventually gives up the ghost

Wish I could, but I've been holding out for a long while already, like a lot of people, and it's gotten to the point where I need to replace my computer. I'm using a 5 year old Vaio and it's starting to fall apart: speakers stopped working, no battery life, keys are starting to faulter, etc. I appreciate your advice, but waiting just isn't an option for me anymore. :(

I think $1300 for a new Penryn black MacBook or $1100 for a refurb black Penryn MacBook may be right up your alley.
The old generation of MacBooks are still pretty sweet machines, and lower prices don't hurt.

: )

I do understand it and I do use FW on my iMac and my iBook. My point was just in relation to PC users that try to compare their offerings with ours.

Most PCs don't even know what FW is, while we are here complaining that OUR base model notebook doesn't have it now...

As for the creative people targeted by Apple, the answer is MBP, not MB. It has always been like that for creative professionals that use Apple products.

Apple can't keep removing features and maintain their price point.

Creative professionals may buy the pro machines, but 'prosumers' shouldn't have to fork over the big bucks just to do a little light video/music editing.

After all, why should I spend $1200 on a laptop that's only good for web browsing and word processing when I can get a Dell running Ubuntu for half the price?

I have to say, the coolest thing is that the MacBook has a round iSight instead of the black square. I always liked that about the Air, but I didn't like how the Air was tapered and only had a few ports. Too bad the MaBook isn't as thin.

Firewire = Stranded costs?!

having to consider firewire devices as stranded costs easily motivated registration to submit this comment.

any pointers to a related petition website yet?

New mac user

So....I just went and bought myself a ridiculously overpriced entry level new macbook...

...and I just wanted to say a big thank you to you forum lot. You're completely insane, but have been a huge help over the past few months - I've been planning to move to a mac for about 4 months now and have been lurking over the forums.

I'm disappointed to be spending 200 quid more than I expected (I'm a student, was going to get the entry level macbook at ~£600, now paying ~£820) but this has been slightly offset by £95 off a spanking new 16gb black nano and a free printer that I'll sell on.

Yes we in the UK are getting shafted by the prices, but we always do...and us students do get brand new designs on the mac and nano...so it's not all bad.

I genuinely cannot wait to get my hands on the new design, and just as much on OS X. It's been a long time coming.

I'm not gonna stick around, so just wanted to say thanks before I go.

If FW is THAT important for you on a MB, go buy a refurb or assume your purportedly "pro" profile and take the plunge for a new MBP; that's what they are there for.

That's certainly what Apple wants you to believe. $500 just for FW? I don't think so. And I don't want to carry around a 15" laptop either.

As for the G3, it has served me well for almost 7 years...so your comment shows that you're either arrogant or a newbie Apple user that is not used to the longevity of Apple products.

Uh, did you look at my signature? And by the way - it was a joke, or did you miss the smilie?

_All_ of Apple's computers (except the Air) _used_ to be suitable for use by either home or professional audio/video users, the creative types who were content creators rather than content consumers.

The funniest thing is: we're sooooooooo spoiled. I've never seen a desktop or portable PC at work with a SINGLE FW port...go figure...

Every laptop at my work has a fw connector, we have over 3500 laptops spanning the last 4 years (mostly from Fujitsu Siemens and Dell).

Sorry, but to elaborate that the new MB is good only for browsing and Word is simply glib...these are powerful machines, and much more capable than the previous batch.

Again, the ONLY thing missing is FW, which sees some heavy use from digital video and photo segments, as well as the occasional target disk mode user; but for the market targeted by MBs, double USB is more than enough.

One reason why I liked the MBA was because of the "black backlit Chicklet keys" lol. So having it on the new macbooks is a plus for me. I'm going to keep it brutally honest, I'm buying one:D.

perhaps you should look outside of your work. Even the cheapo Compaq i have sitting beside me has Firewire. Go figure

the more i look at the new macbook the more i want to get macbook pro.. :( but the current design really isn't that great, it really looks like a HP laptop now.. :( on top of that, i am guessing there will be a price drop/update somewhere before/after the holiday season!

and why are they still using Core 2 Duo?? isn't centrino 2 out??

a little longer for the next update might get the snow leopard os to be pre-installed. :)

I missed BOTH...busy day at work and braindead right now, so nevermind...but I still find the new MBs very cool...

I'm surprised the price of the Apple cinema displays hasnt gone down?
the 23" at least.

Also.. is cpu type in the mbp the same?..

And.. I was hoping the mac pros (towers) would update.. any hope on that soon?

Dear Apple: You removed the firewire port from your 13" Macbook, forcing me to a 15", which is half a pound heavier, and won't fit in my bag. No thanks. You also appear to be using a screen that's more glossy than ever, when you should be making them more matte. And the price has gone up. No thanks.

Having filtered down my 1.5Ghz 12" PBG4 to my girlfriend and gotten the MacBook in my signature, I'm amazed you're holding strong with your 867Mhz 12".

I understand where you are coming from as I, too, was frustrated by the increase in size (and am still amazed at how little that 12" is, what an amazing little computer!). When the Santa Rosa MacBooks came out I was really hoping to see a small Pro replacement, but no dice. I caved.

And boy have I been happy that I did. I thought I wouldn't like the glossy screen, but I never work outside, and the color saturation is so much nicer. The MacBook doesn't feel small, but it also doesn't feel big. The extra screen real estate is nice, and the SPEED is great.

The biggy for me is running Windows at native speeds (via Boot Camp and Fusion). As a support professional, I spend 98% of my work time in Windows.

Anywho, as a former holdout for a small FOOTPRINT (non-Air like) Pro level computer from Apple, I'm thrilled I caved. I have also been happy to migrate away from metal - which dents, a lot. Maybe the new design won't dent so much, but over years of use, it's virtually impossible to not dent it (we're talking in and out of a laptop bag multiple times every day and often less than desirable workspaces, i.e-whatever small space is available on client's desk/office/etc).

Get a black MacBook. You'll love it.

It's basically the Air that I always wanted. I'll buy one when my current MacBook dies. The new MacBook is really nice, but that's just my opinion.

Just saw this on AppleInsider:

Panasonic and JVC sell cameras with USB ports. It seems Sony is the last hold out.

High Def on these consumer cams is highly compressed with a data rate around 25Mpbs and don't come close to 400Mbps."

And another one:

My last video camera and my current HD video camera (Sony HD SR11) uses USB 2.0 to import to a computer. Do they make FireWire video cameras anymore? Come to think of it, They haven't used firewire to tranfer to an iPod in like 500 years I think."

So, although still disappointing, the lack of FW is not the end of the world. And please...NOBODY should carry extra HDs with their notebooks...this is for desktops like my iMac.

FACT: Apple knows when to phase out technologies...and it creates a new demand for what supersedes them.

What do I honestly lose if I buy a refurbished 15" MBP for $1500.
I'm thinking about an unopened 15 inch MacBook Pro (MB133LL/A) for only $1588, and yesterday it cost $1999. It has everything...2,4 GHz, 200 GB hard drive, backlit keyboard, backlit display, FW 400, FW 800, GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB graphics. The only thing holding me back is the sound of the updated design has a much sturdier one-piece aluminium construction, so I may still settle on the new high end 2.4 GHz MacBook.
