really lame looking though. That was the first one i found so surely they are available with the "better looking" option.

Apple should just make their own and bundle it with the macbooks and macbook pros.

(in case you dont want to click the link, its a firewire/USB to ethernet adapter)

That won't work. Sorry I posted that link. It's poorly explained on the site but it is for some cable tester so that you can connect to USB or FireWire computers, not to give the computer FireWire.

My soon to be setup:

$1249 ed price 2.0GHz MB plus $74.94 tax comes to $1323.94

Printer that I haven't decided on yet: free (up to $100)

OWC 2X2GB RAM kit 139.99 minus $15 total for the rebate on the two original DDR3 chips to send in. Comes to 124.99.

OWC Hitachi 320GB HDD 5400 RPM $94.99 minus $20 hitachi MIR and $25 rebate from OWC for sending in the original 160GB HDD. Comes to 49.99 plus 3.95 shipping and 1.00 insurance to $54.94

Grand total: $1503.87

2GHz MB, 320 GB HDD 5400 RPM, and 4GB 2X2.

... But it seems like Apple resolved that smaller screens are NOT an alternative, and that FW is NOT a priority for the MB-targeted markets. ...

So for the want of a $10 FW chipset Apple's great efforts over the years to serve the needs of its creative community came to a screeching halt?

WTF?

Migration Assistant?

I've always migrated to new Macs using the Migration Assistant over Firewire. Will the new Macbook work like the Air and do it over the network?

you know what you CAN do?

People,

I'm new, long time mac user, but have been reading for awhile. If you really want to see your complaints go to good use, and want do see change, then go here (someone else already suggested, but nothing really was done):

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html

Make an official complaint, and I can promise you that if enough of us do it, apple will listen - and HOPEFULLY change prices and problems!

Please please please do it! Complain about whatever you want - just make sure you include the crappy prices!

Thanks!

there's no mention ( that I can find ) on the Apple site anywhere of how migration will be done now , without firewire, ....there must be some adapter or something .......surely ?

Hi,

The removal of FireWire from the laptop line doesn't make sense to me. Why would I spend $2149 CND for a Macbook Pro just to run my ProTools firewire rig? That is a grand more than the base Macbook, and there is a lot of good gear I could get with that $1000, like new studio monitors.

I hope there is a way to connect firewire to the MacBook otherwise I will have to eventually buy a PC just for my recording. How depressing!

A successor to the 12" PowerBook!!!

I think you haters are crazy!

In virtually every way, the new MB is far superior to the old; 5x faster graphics, LED screen, backlit keyboard, aluminum construction, etc.

We've finally got a successor to the 12" PowerBook (my favorite Mac of all time)!

Sure, FW would have been nice, but for me it's hardly a deal breaker. If you're really using FW for video, etc, you're in the Pro league anyway. I will miss the ability to run in target mode, but I used it once in 3 years...

Just ordered my 2.4Ghz w/4GB of RAM*. PSYCHED!

* It's nice to see that Apple has repriced their memory upgrades: $150 for 4GB DDR3 is pretty reasonable.

.....and where exactly do you work?

Even the bargain PC's at Staples have Firewire for crying out loud!!!

Yes, it's easy to say that they have them NOW. They definitely didn't have them in 2002 when I bought my iBook G3. And most basic PCs used at work STILL don't have FW.

So unless you are all working in cutting-edge companies that change their IT park every 2 years, that's the REALITY for most workers out there.

could have been way better

I am pretty disappointed also. Apple could have put in a 3rd USB port, I would trade the firewire for another usb port. What makes me angry is that my wife got a $600 hp and it has 3 usb ports, firewire, serial, card reader. dvd burner.... it just seems like it would be so easy to add another usb port and leave firewire also. Dont get me wrong I love my macbook. I actually think the one I have now is better for my needs and I paid 1300 with 4gb of ram by doing the upgrade myself. I dont do any gaming so i dont need better graphics card. I have the wii for gaming. This new one is pretty but its just a pretty face. Not worth spending all that money.

Agreed...

I'd been waiting for these updates for a long time... But I am rather disappointed and decided to buy a refurbished 2.4 ghtz macbook pro for 1440 instead. Overall, a much better deal than the macbooks.

Yeah, I am in on that too. First time I've seriously considered it.

Thanks, I think you summed it up nicely...the MB is WAY BETTER in every aspect except for those few that (i) use FW devices on a daily basis WITH their notebooks; (ii) aren't "pro" enough to use a MBP; and (iii) have a lot of existing accessories based on FW, even when the majority of media devices is already offered in USB.

Thanks for the explanation

Well with all this Firewire talk I decided to email Mr. Jobs, and lo and behold I got a rather lame response.

Now I'm sure that this wasn't the man himself, after all I'm sure he can't read all the spam that gets sent his way, and by the looks of it it seems a rather generic response that's already been planned.

Well have a read and enjoy.

Most digital camcorders have switched to USB and many have already dropped Firewire.

Greetings Steve,

Well the geek in me just stopped what I was doing to check out the new notebooks, and what can I say but "Where's the Firewire"

Part of me is thinking that maybe someone made a mistake somewhere and forgot to cross that off the checklist, or maybe there's some magical device in the new notebooks that allows the use of Firewire wirelessly.

Like my subject says, no Firewire no iLife.

So here's a few reason that I think someone's been spiking Apples Kool-Aid

1. What's the point of including iMovie if the end user cannot transfer video from their DV camcorder.

2. Target Disk mode (yeah I know USB, but not as good)

3. FCP and express, read 1

4. Transferring from an old mac, like say an iBook G4, gotta do it over the slower ethernet now, or get an external drive :)

I think that with dropping Firewire part of the, well I guess old school, creative market will be alienated and frustrated after alot have invested heavily in Hard Drives, Audio interfaces, Decks, all with Firewire, and now we have to pay that extra special premium just for a few components that cost pennies.

I myself am a musician and Audio engineer, so I wouldn't touch another USB audio interface with a barge-pole, but come my next need of a notebook I'll have the choice taken from me and have to go MBP, when personally I like the form factor of the 13.3" MB.

Any way enough of my moaning, I best get back to doing some work, oh and by the way cheers for all the cool gear and software that's kept me busy.

P.S. does Applecare cover loss of hearing when previewing a processed mono file in Soundtrack Pro 2?, Yeah sorry the apps not ready for professional use yet, and it pains me to have to boot into Windows just to use a good wave editor, it's so close too :)

Yours flummoxed and bemused

look, i know everybody is freaking out about the cost of these new macbooks, but when you break it down, theyre actually a better value than pcs. look at the specs on the $1500 (with education discount) macbook:
2.4ghz processor with 1066mhz FSB
250GB HD
2-4 GB RAM (dont buy extra RAM from apple, HUGE ripoff)
NVIDA 9400M integrated graphics
high-res LED display
best OS
sturdier construction (supposedly)

go to dells website and build a laptop with those same specs and you will end up with something costing around $1600-$1800. dual 2.4ghz processors are top-notch and that 1066mhz FSB on a mac is actually a better indicator of real-world computing speed than is the ghz, and although you can get dual core 2.4ghz pcs, they dont have that same 1066mhz FSB- not for this price range, anyway. when you factor in that macs run vista faster than pcs, the resistance to viruses, and the mac reliability (im typing this on a 2003 ibook G4 that hasnt been sick a day in its life), the new macbook is hands down the best option and a great value.

-note: unless you need FW. personally, i dont own a single FW periph.

I'm interested in opinions as to which of the following new models offers the best deal for the price?

New high-end MB
Either of the new MBP's.

Not being a professional user, personally, I'm tempted to say the MacBook.
But with Snow Leopard using GPU's to boost overall performance, is the low-end MBP a more "future-proof" choice for a few hundred more than the high-end MB?

Also, what about the high end MBP double the cache from 3MB to 6MB along with a 2.53 processor and a 512 Dedicated GPU.

It's basically the Air that I always wanted. I'll buy one when my current MacBook dies. The new MacBook is really nice, but that's just my opinion.

I think it looks really nice too, Much better than the white plastic. I wonder why it's getting such neg though.

Hi,

Thanks for the link.

I sent in a note about my concern with the firewire port.

Stupid.

What makes me angry is that my wife got a $600 hp and it has 3 usb ports, firewire, serial, card reader. dvd burner....
It's like bench racing... I've got a 302 bored .030 over with a Edelbrock blah blah blah...

Unless you use it, it doesn't matter. How often do you need more than two USB ports? One for a jump drive and one for a mouse is plenty 99% of the time. Card reader? Let me reiterate that I'm glad Apple hasn't jumped on the media card du jour bandwagon. Either plug your device directly into your Mac or spend $10 on a card reader that you needn't carry with you (cuz that's what you're doing when it's built in). Serial? Please. DVD burner? Got it.

The only room for griping IMO is the lack of FW, and if you're really using FW for what FW is good for then you're in Pro, not consumer territory.

I think $1300 for a new Penryn black MacBook or $1100 for a refurb black Penryn MacBook may be right up your alley.
The old generation of MacBooks are still pretty sweet machines, and lower prices don't hurt.

: )

Hmm, yes I'm looking through the refurb store and there are some good deals in there. I'll definitely consider it, thanks for the input. :)
