I have addressed this several times in this thread. These are high school students. The MacBooks are a real stretch of their family budget. I have never had a parent that would spring for an MBP. Nor could I in good conscience ask them to when there is a viable alternative. A PC laptop with similar or better specs at a competing or lower price than the MB that can run CS3. I use an Asus daily that is very reliable, had same processor and greater ram specs than the MBP at the time that I bought it. Also, larger hard drive, HDMI, more USB ports and an eSATA port and was $700 less than the MBP even with my educational discount (which they have also reduced).

This is not my preference, but I will have little choice. With finances being tighter it will be harder to sell parents on getting their students a laptop at any price, let alone at the MBP prices.

Since when do highschool students carry around laptops? Wouldn't the iMac work wonderfully then? It not only has the Firewire for you but it has a bigger screen which would be better for editing purposes right? Also, then they could carry their necessary school files on an external hard drive to your class and not worry about carrying a laptop around. And, its cheaper.

Thank you. First, I should have made it clear that this was in the high school category, but they are awards presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. They started a national award program for for high school broadcasting across the US about six years ago. We won for news stories, sports stories and in the short form documentary category. Some examples of stories we have won for: A story about a soldier in Iraq whose fuel truck was hit by an IED. We sent him a cheap miniDV camcorder and he sent us back some great footage and we did an interview with him and other soldiers. Another story was about wild horses being inhumanely slaughtered and being sold for human consumption in other countries. We were able to get some undercover footage from the slaughterhouse. As a part of that story we got an interview with a US congressman who has co-sponsored legislation to put an end to it. One of the sports stories we did was about a local one-legged wrestler who was undefeated in two years of competition and won a national championship. If you would be interested that story is on youtube. I could find the link so you could see a sample of what we do.
I push my students really hard to tell a story well and to make sure it's fact-checked, fair and balanced. I have them go after stories that they don't think they can do. And in the midst of that I try to teach them all the basics and beyond of effective video production.

well still exemplary regardless :) very good work I can tell you are a great teacher for this field for the students who wish to study Video/AV and Television Broadcast :D I am a college student entering the Graphic Design and Advertising field so I don't know if a firewire is necessary for me but Apple should have kept the option

Look folks, in all thus hubbub about the missing ports and higher prices, you must understand Apple's philosophy: KISS.

Oh, I understand Apple's philosophy just fine. Adopt IEEE 1394 across the board in your product line. Develop and encourage software and peripherals that work seamlessly with it.
Drop the standard prematurely so people are forced to buy the upgraded products.

If they left in an alternative in the MB, no problem. But it's not available yet.

Sounds too much like planned obsolescence.

Folks,
All of you who are moaning about Firewire: if you haven't noticed there is a firewire over Ethernet protocol. which if apple decides to use the will only have to add something on the motherboard (i think) for all we know it could aready be in the laptops but apple may have not publicized it to differentiate the lines a bit. But if it's not included i don't see why Apple won't after this back lash add it on it's alot easier then changing the case design.

ditto, feedback sent. hopefully someone at Apple will notice.

sent from my iBook G4 that has a FIREWIRE PORT

My gosh you guys are acting like your notebooks have been Resurrected after this refresh, Hey! Apple actually made alot of people feel better about there old apple products! I don't think that has ever happened in these large numbers :D not being sarcastic think about it, every year apple refreshes their product lines ( mainly ipods and laptop specs ) and leaves you feeling kinda left out with your old last year model, but this time Apple made you feel better about your older model! Whoa!

So, after spending an extra $700 just to get a $10 port, should I really have to spend an additional $20 just to connect my camcorder?

Apparently Apple think you should.

The Macbook should have one firewire port.
The Macbook Pro should have one firewire 400, one firewire 800, and one ExpressCard.
That differentiates the lines plenty.

Correction, they HAD those ports.

Hey I actually agree with you as far as number and type of ports that I would like but everyone here can vote with their dollar and see if Apple responds.

Ah yes, the infamous FireWire S800T. Unfortunately it is more like vapourware for now. There are no devices that uses it. Will Apple be the first?

If Apple needs to add a chip to the motherboard, what happens to those that just bought one now? Recall?

Secondly, if it is just a firmware update, that is another $10 to Apple then? Sarbanes-Oxley pretty much makes sure that additional functionality cannot be given out for free. The same as enabling Wifi-N in earlier MacBooks.

Call me sad, but I decided to do a quick bit of analysis on BestBuy's website to see the state of FireWire on today's camcorders. The results were not pretty...

Bestbuy has five categories for camcorder: DVD, MiniDV, Hard drive, High Definition, and Flash. Some of these categories overlap and below I have made no allowances for this fact.

DVD
11 units listed. 9 had USB connections and amazingly 2 had no connectivity at all (must rely on the DVD). None of these had firewire.

MiniDV
9 Units listed. All but one of them had FireWire (8). One unit had FW and USB and one had USB only.

Hard Drive
22 Units listed. All cameras had USB and five included FW as well.

High Definition
32 Units listed. All but a $4000 pro camera had USB. The pro only had FW. 5 other cameras had both FW and USB.

Flash
51 Units listed. At this point I gave up. It was looking pretty dismal for FW and I figured that all Flash based cameras will be USB given the state of the market.

So totaling up, I have a 124 units (some of which are duplicated across the lists) but of that 124, 93% has USB connectivity versus only 15% with a FW option.

I still think it is incredibly bad of Apply to leave off a FW400 port from the Macbook because I am sure that there are still a lot of FW base older camcorders in peoples hands, but when you look at the current crop of camcorders available for sale today, it is apparent that FW has become increasingly irrelevant in the camcorder market.

I believe it is too soon for FW to be dropped. Yes the writing is on the wall, but I think apple should have waited another generation (or two) at least.

Yours was the best stated of about a thousand posts concerning this issue. I especially liked/agree with the last few sentences.

Hi, I posted this on another thread but received no reply yet.

Hey, does anyone know when Best Buy will be getting the new MacBook?
I noticed that MacMall and MacConnection are already selling them along with the Apple Store of course but I need to buy mine at Best Buy because I have a Best Buy credit card. Does anyone have any idea? Tomorrow? The end of the week?

disk mode without firewire?>

like some have said, the entry price point here in Australia is just BAD! $2099!! and $2549?!?! the worst part of them all, is that you can't even get educational discount for macbook anymore! after clicking educational discounts, the price remain the same?

have you seen the Aussie $ lately, at .7 you cant expect great prices

can one use disk mode without firewire?>

Ok sounds like I was told the wrong prices for UK higher education.
Just got off the phone with the UK team (I got routed to US last night).

Old White Macbook 2.1ghz = £618
New Macbook 2.0Ghz = £816
New Macbook 2.4Ghz = £988

I just realized if it may actually be possible for Apple to retrofit a FW jack into the side of the new Macbooks. Check this out.

oldnewmacbook.jpg

Would it even be possible? YIKES!
It doesn't look possible to retroactively add FireWire to the new MacBook, considering that the whole bottom half is taken up by the battery. But even if it was, Apple would never do this. A FireWire port would be hailed as a "breakthrough feature" on the next MacBook revision. The only way such a port could be added is if some of the other ports were moved to the right side, and clearly Apple does not want to do this.

FireWire is no longer going to be on future MacBook models. Like it or not, we must accept this. FireWire has long been taken out of the iPod, too, another consumer product.

The new MacBook is a drop-dead gorgerous machine! It's just so beautiful and refined!Yes, the lack of FireWire is a negative point, but I don't care! And I even have a FireWire-device hooked up to my MBP! I could easily live with USB-connection instead.

When I bought my MBP, I promised myself that I will wait for at least three years before I replace it. I have two more years to go. But I'm seriously lusting for a MacBook! What a beautiful machine!

Here's to hoping that Apple releases an aluminium-clad Netbook in the future. I might not replace my MBP for two more years, but I didn't say anything about not buying additional computers ;).

I do need firewire 400 on the road for my videocam. Also, I need a laptop with a small footprint, which is why I still use the Powerbook 12". I was hoping for Apple to put out a new model with the max. footprint of the 12" AND firewire. Target mode is a feature I use frequently, too.

So, with the new smaller models I would have to buy a new video camera, which I cannot justify to spend. The Pro's footprint is too large for me to take along. So I guess I will skip this generation.

UK being ripped off....again

I've been a mac user for about 8 years, and 6 months ago, switched back to Windows, due to the fact that higher spec'd Windows laptops can be bought for half the cost of Apple.

I'd read the various rumours on sites prior to yesterday's presentation, and was hopeful that a switch back to Apple would be viable, due to a sensible price drop and specification increase.

Post presentation, I'm very disappointed with the new range of laptops, and it seems to me that Apple are totally unaware of its competition and the economic climate.

Encouragingly, Apple announced a price drop on the white Macbook to $999, but I'm from England and this $999 price drop somehow translates into a cost of £719 ($1258 at todays exchange rate). This is actually £20 more expensive than the previous cheapest Macbook.

I think that the aluminium Macbook looks lovely, but at a price of £949 ($1660), its nowhere near well specified enough to justify buying.

Apple's presentation and new Macbook video are suggesting that we should all be excited about the all in one brick design and the new graphics chips. Personally, I don't care how its manufactured as long as its done responsibly. And at the current prices, having a new graphics chip is completely pointless. For the cheapest £719 white Macbook, you could buy a PS3, 26" LCD TV and a thin/light sub notebook with larger hard drive.

I like the fact that the Macbook is aluminium and has a glass trackpad, but I'm not prepared to pay £300 more than I did for my last Macbook.

Overall, the cost of the new Macbooks are going to restrict Apple's sales of them, in my opinion. I earn enough money to be able to buy one, and have historically been a fan of Apple's products, but I won't be buying one, unless a more realistic pricing structure is introduced.

I resent the feeling that I'm being ripped off.

the good: combo drive gone.. thank god was about time
the design ... i like it
finally real GPUs inside the macbooks
the US price drop

the bad:
no nonglare option
no firewire in the faster mac books while firewire in the cheap model .. so much for confusing lineup
price to high for at least 100 bucks across all countries
lowest macbook 1 GB of ram ? apple being cheapskates
and no bluray for the macbook pro ? why... i have no idea
no additional hdmi output ? in a macbook it's borderline "ok" to leave that out but on the macbookpro ? .. disgrace

the ugly: most confusing laptop lineup:
lowest macbook 667ddr2 with 2.1ghz and firewire then the macbooks with 2.0 no firewire but better graphics card and 1066ddr3 and then on top of that the 17" old style macpro with 800ddr2 etc. etc.
seriously crawling through specs seems to be the norm now with apple .. it gets seriously annoying
switching between 9400m and 9600 GT in the macbook pro meaning switching system preferences and log out re-login ? WTF .. you don't have to do that on the Sony laptops
adapter galore: is it just me or are those prices rising up and up over the time and with every new design you need more external stuff ?.. seriously stop it and put a normal sized display port/hdmi on the case already
and was there any word on HDCP compliance and better hardware acceleration for HD videos finally ?

A bit of a revolution...

What a conservative bunch we all are...;)

For Apple, green-causes and maybe for game'rs this is a move forward; for some of us it is un-compelling and for some the partial abandonment of what are fast becoming legacy technologies anyway [ieee1394/FW and miniDVI/miniVGA] offers a good enough reason to moan.

On the positives, usb has won the ipod-war, the hdd-war, the hobby-camcorder-war and even my g2/40gb ipod can sync using usb whilst charging from an external adapter, so I think I'll be able to get over that loss. And the move to an open standard for mini-video connectors has to be a "good thing", doesn't it?

The WTF over MB's reducing from an Intel/smoke-and-mirrors/over-clocking at 2.1/667 to a native 2.0/1066, a significant bump in L2 cache and a doubling of RAM capacity is probably misplaced; it will in all probability be a significant improvement ITRW; although it way well take the whole 4gbRAM to get the best out of the new graphics chip in the MB.

And that makes Apple's decision to reduce materially the price of BTO/full-warranty RAM, helpful.

Personally there's absolutely nothing here to make my trusty blackBook worry [or my kids expectant of another freebie coming their way] and nothing in the MBA that means I'll stop lugging a MacMini when I need something more for client presentations.

Nice one Jonathan; but no cigar!

Come on, you can these adapters for a fraction of that.
I have seen 9 to 6 pin cables for around $5 shipped.
No doubt the demand should be increasing now.
I think that will translate into lower prices and/or better availability.

Shouldn't come as a surprise at all. Blame the British Pound.

Those who have needs for such interfaces (usually pro's) can get the MBP.

I disagree. Most amateur dv-tape based videocamera require FW to transfer DV-footage. Besides, I own severyl (non-pro) periphreals which require firewire. Apart from that, it is also a question of size. For my use of the laptop (currently a PB 12", last edition), anything much larger is simply too large. I was hoping for Apple to reintroduce a smaller Pro model, such as the old 12" was....
