I'm sorry but you are definitely not living in the real world. Have you been out of your house recently?

I suggest you drive down to your nearest University or shopping mall and talk to some people about 'firewire'. 99% of the population buy a Macbook because of the design and the operating system, simple as that.

True that. Most people I know (students), aren't even sure what FW is. lol. And no, I don't know any video editors, but I do have a miniDV camcorder with FW. No big deal.

I wouldn't be too sure about that, maybe because I'm surrounded at work by audio people and IT people, part of our cooler water chat today was over the stupidity of dropping Firewire, and reading these forums, and even the forums on Apples own website (which they have been censoring, or deleting left right and centre) all lead me to think that they have made a major mistake.

There's stories of IT people for schools phoning Apple and complaining saying that they can't buy their notebooks if they don't include Firewire (target disc mode, great for sorting problems).

And I hope that more people complain vocally, and with their wallets so Apple takes note and listens to big segments of their userbase.

I have to say that you make a very clear and valid argument. BUT, professional users such as yourself make up almost no part of the Macbook market.

The new design will only enlarge the potential target market for Apple laptops.

I personally love the new design and am anxiously waiting for my new MB to arrive.

Well professional users can't make any part of the current Macbook market anymore, but I think that stating that they make up no part of yesterdays market is untrue. I personally know plenty of video editors and musicians, from hobbyists to professionals who own Macbooks, granted I live a few streets away from one of the most popular music colleges in England. And the lack of firewire will be a killer to many of these, especially the students who can't afford the Pro models.

Returns

I haven't been down to the local Apple Store yet, but probably this weekend. I'll hang out for awhile and just ease drop a bit to see what they are saying about the MacBook. I'm wondering if the employees are going to tell people that it is now lacking firewire and checking to see if they have Digital Camcorders that won't work with the new MacBooks... Also to see if they are still pushing the entry level digital recorders (like the Canon ZR's sold in the stores) or at least stating which ones work with which Macs... The good old days of "it just works" are over...

I'm betting there are going to be a bunch of angry returns if they are not forthcoming with their omission.

Has anybody figured out which 2.53 mhz cpu the new Macbook Pro uses?

Same thing with the cpu's used in the new macbook?

can anyone help us find the answer? Bootcamp windows and look at system properties and it'll tell you. T9400 or P9500 ?

As a student, I know exactly what firewire is and use it daily on my current Macbook.

firewire s800t

does anybody know about this? from what i understand the new firewire uses a connection like ethernet. can the ethernet port on a macbook then be used for both internet and this new firewire (not at the same time of course)

Apple. You almost had me. Just almost. I was ready to sell my iBook and plop down my life savings for a brand new MacBook, just because they look so gorgeous. (At first I didn't like it, but it definitely grew on me) Then, what's this I hear? No FireWire?

...So, my FW hard drive is now incompatible with a new MB? You know, the one I can't afford to replace with anything else? The one that has all of my really important info on it? Yeah, that one? What am I supposed to do with it now?!

Come on Apple, way to drop the ball....my iBook has FW, and the MacBook can't?

Geez.

If you're a family with a camcorder wouldn't it make more sense to get an iMac anyway which still has 2 FW ports?

No not necessarily. We have a desktop PC but when we decided to get a laptop I convinced my wife to get a Macbook. I now no longer video edit on the PC but do it all on the Macbook instead. I've been trying to convince my wife to dump the PC and replace it with a 24in iMac (so we'd be all mac) but she won't do it as the PC works fine for her.

Plus the I when to my nephew's wedding in England and took my macbook. The next day while relaxing in the cottage we rented, I was able to produce a wedding video in several hours (this was the first time I used iMovie in anger).

Now I would not be able to do this with the new Macbook. I'm liking my white 2.2Mhz 4GB 320GB santa rosa based Macbook more and more. If only it had a better graphics subsystem.....

I call BS, and judging by all the neg feedback it looks like many others do too, I really think that sales are gonna drop, and until they rectify the lack of firewire Apple deserve it.

If you go over to Gizmodo, Anandtech, Engadget, NotebookReview.com you'll see that the vast, vast majority of people think the new MacBook is pretty great, even without FW. Yeah, FW is EVERYTHING to some people, but it's NOTHING to most people. Both Apple aficionados who don't need FW and 1st time Apple buyers who couldn't tell you what FW is are going to buy the MacBook in droves. Mark my words.

The white MacBook was the best selling Mac ever, and I'm willing to bet at least 90% of buyers never even used it's FW capability.

wow people are still talking about firewire? seriously, get over it. buy an older mb if firewire is so important. after all, function > form right? the old mb performs just as well as the new one

Spend $30 on a new USB enclosure and swap in the old HDD. It's a pretty simple solution, and now your HDD will be readable on any computer on the planet.

I call BS, not because of the firewire, simply because there is an amazing amount of apple hate on sites like giz and engadget.

Can anyone tell me how you're supposed to use one of the new MacBooks with a video camera and iMovie without Firewire?

You're not!

Apple's mantra seems to be, "we're cool! Cool people have the latest gadgets.... Firewire is old hat and all modern high def camcorders have USB. If you have a pro camcorder ($4000+) that only has firewire out then same on you! You should be using a Macbook Pro..."

So you rather than spending $700 to get a MBP for firewire, you go out an buy a $700 High Def camcorder instead. Because like, you know, that's cool

:apple: you suck! Its a shame that OSX is so good....

My Decision

I went to the store to Carlsbad today to see if I could check out the new Macbooks. The first guy was a little snarky and said that they couldn't put them out for me to see until the "visuals" were in place. I got into a great conversation with the second fellow there and we came to the conclusion that I would be happier buying a refurb 2.5 MBP than a new 2.4 13". Better screen for my photographic work and more processing power for the same price. I bought it. I will spend many sleepless nights I am sure bemoaning the lack of a 39% larger touchpad but should be able to get over it with sufficient time and therapy.

They should really just get rid of the "Pro" line and just merge the two product lines into one. The laptops are just about the same now besides for this firewire and and crippled graphics in the non-Pro. Seems a little childish to me. Really they just just keep it simple across the board withh three different screen sizes 13-15-17. Plus they have their "Air" ...

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I've never owned a mac but have always liked the pros. It's light enough and powerful enough for me and costs $50 more then the new MB. It would be nice to have the smaller, lighter new MB but the refurb is probably the better deal.

Spy shots

I was a little skeptical when I saw those last spy shots, but, wow, It's amazing what good photography can do! These things are handsome. I Love the black keyboard, it's like the old Ti's. And for those who bemoan the gloss only screen - you could probably make a million selling non reflective screen covers... Get to it before I do!

Folks,
All of you who are moaning about Firewire: if you haven't noticed there is a firewire over Ethernet protocol. which if apple decides to use the will only have to add something on the motherboard (i think)

You think...
I did use ethernet to transfer folders and files between drives before using firewire later. The process was very similar, the firewire easier and faster. Period.
