£949 for the new macbook:eek: ha ha ha ha ha whimper whimper

Sad thing is that's *only* about $80 more than the US at current rates...

(goes to see if there's any gold hidden under the sofa)

Well, looks like the tibook is going to be replaced by a dell, farewell OS X, it's been great :(

After all the recent rumours I was starting to think i'd be disappointed by the new macbooks. BUT, I love all the new features yet there is one thing I am soooo annoyed about..

The UK prices are so excessive, and now I can't afford one this instant - NOT HAPPY. Cheapest NEW model = £949 (The price of the old blackbook, the then high level macbook!

AND they INCREASE the price of the entry-level macbook by 20 quid (I know others have pointed this out already) after they were saying they had REDUCED it!

NOT IMPRESSED

So frustrated, don't know what to do now.

Help!!

I waited patiently for 6 months for THIS??? This will be my first Mac and first laptop.

I am on a tight budget and I don't use gaming or video. I don't like the new look at all. I was hoping for all alum -even the keys.

I like the backlit keyboard and trackpad, but I don't think it's worth it to upgrade just for those. 1/2 lb lighter and 1/16 of an inch thinner isn't really gonna sway me either.

I think I am gonna buy the old style white macbook with the highest specs 2.4 Ghz/2GB/250GB and save myself $400 bucks!!

Do you guys see a reason for me to upgrade to the new?? Someone suggested a refurb- but I am a little hesitant on that??

Your thoughts...

So say I know someone who bought a Macbook (low-end) about 3 weeks ago. Does she have any options to attempt to get a new one? Or is she stuck with it?

Thanks

Hey, she just needs to point out it has firewire. Instant sale to many people here.

I almost bought a 750Gb Lacie external drive for $120 at FutureShop last week, until I realised it was only USB 2.0.

$160 for 1TB. Imagine transferring 1TB over USB 2.0.

Incredibly unimpressive

WOW! This update compels me to run out and....have a beer. No matte screen, Apple continuing to say goodbye to graphic pro's imo. However, the 17" may be my saviour, assuming it will be getting a good update soon.:(

The 2 tone doesn't work for me-I'll stick with the all black case any day. The black bezel (and keyboard) look completely forced and out of place. I liked the idea of the aluminum wrist-rest with a black lid. Also, at least my black MacBook has firewire!

Refurb store!

With no backlit screens on the 2.0s, the 2.4s (both white and black) are GOOD deals on the refurb store. You sacrifice slightly better graphics, 0.5lbs and aluminum enclosure, but at the price difference, does that REALLY matter?

Plus the Blackbooks are still damn sexy. Personally I think I'll wait for the new MBPs to come up on the refurb store sometime after Christmas.

correct me if i'm wrong, but 3mb L2 and a higher end GPU will offset the reduction in cpu processing speed. especially since future programming will utilize the GPU more extensively. thoughts?

They've always got to have something to keep the Macbook Pros selling.

Before, it was the video card difference that kept the Pros going for the MBP.

Now that the cards are much closer to each other, they had to find something else to take away from the Macbook.

That something was firewire.

Kind of a lame choice. Why can't screen size and processor speed be enough to fulful that mission?

Dont trying to be rude or anything but honestly i have never anyone i know (even myself) use firewire and i'm a computer/device geek :)
Not sure perhaps in some business areas it is more common but i never across it "yet".

Think of the clinetele. People who buy Macbooks today don't use the old technology Apple used to use. Firewire is no longer compatible with iPods, and only external HDDs seem to support it. It just isn't important to have one. I'd take an extra USB port any day.

Can you help me migrate my stuff from my old machine then please?

Did it wirelessly with an Air at work... 32GB Took 18 hours... Not really an option.

Dropping Firewire means I'd need to buy a USB HD to move from my Mac (With Firewire Backup External HD) to a new one... Can I borrow yours? ;)

How about when the Migration Assistant on your new Mac tells you to use a firewire cable to transfer data from your old Mac?

Intel macs can use USB A-A cables for that fyi

Anyway, end result is: no buy for me, I'll keep my whitebook and see how it pans out

Aluminium keys don't make any sense

As far as I'm concerned, the new macbooks aren't interesting enough to switch form a nov 2006 whitebook, I'll wait for the next round.

My gut says that they were not planning to keep the plastic ones at all, but with the change in the economy it was too late to undo the new more expensive process. Too many people were clamoring for a less expensive model. At least the white ones still have firewire.

Just jumped the shark?

I was ready to jump in the car, go to the Apple store and buy a new Macbook. They are just too expensive with the price increase so I will just keep my old one. I think maybe Apple just jumped the Shark.

I'm happy to see everyone is poo-pooing the price of the new MacBook "Premiums" as I like to call them.

Apple usually puts style over substance, but this is f*ing ridiculous, and I'm a huge Apple fan. I dont care how good the case looks, a slow processor (2GHz), no FW (which is how they keep "Pros" from moving down to 13" MacBooks from 15" MBPs), and an increased price aren't winning any arguments.

Hopefully Apple realizes their mistake and poor sales by MSWF in January and cuts the price down to $1099 for the baseline model, $899 for the Plasti-Mac, and goes from there.

yes. Graphics. This might not seem like a difference to you now in Leopard but when snow leopard drops it will. The integrated intel chip in the old macbook is an enough reason to stir away.

I ordered one (2.4Ghz/4GB/320GB). Won't really miss the firewire. Like the glossy screen. I think the overall design and construction is great, however the tech specs are lackluster for this price point. I don't have the patience to wait for rev b though.

I really felt I got a good value with my last macbook 2 years ago (~$1500 versus ~$2000 today). With this macbook the apple tax is pretty significant (I wouldn't be ordering one if I didn't have a substantial apple gift card lying around).

Availible in November?

How come it says the new Macbook will be available in November? I was under the impression that the new Macbook and Macbook Pros will be in stores tomorrow. With today's updates and prices, I don't think I'll be fighting the masses to purchase a new Macbook.

So the $300 difference between the new MacBooks:
- 2.0GHz vs 2.4GHz (2.1GHz for the previous MacBook)
- 160GB vs 250GB
- plain vs backlit keyboard

So.. if I have no use for the extra 90GB, that's $300 for +400MHz and backlit?

Not sure perhaps in some business areas it is more common but i never across it "yet".

It's essential for video work. e-SATA drives are "good," firewire drives are "ok," and USB drives are "not suitable" when it comes to running video off an external drive.

Anyone working with video is now looking at a Macbook Pro, just like Apple wants them to be.

price went up
and no more firewire?

I like the aluminum
but I am keeping my PB 12". I don't think I am going to upgrade for another 2 years or until my PB dies. Thanks.

Anybody talking about the battery?

nobody seems to be talking about the battery. If the case is one solid block. does this mean the battery is inside and not accessible? I hope apple didn't do this. Can somebody confirm this?
As if no firewire and the price, and the black keys and glossy screen, weren't enough problems...

No significant difference in my opinion.. certainly "standards that don't yet exist" BS... how about standards that do exist and have not been implementnted like BluRay....
