What new features were you looking for?
More storage and faster chip to justify the purchase.

While the benchmarks have the A12 a little better than the A10X, the real world GPU performance has the A10X on par or even better than the A12.

So, basically paying for a new Siri Remote.

I may be the only numnutz who is disappointed by the continued lack of support for HDR10+ (Dolby Vision’s supposed competition). Doesn’t need new hardware; I was just hoping to see it in the fine print for TVOS14.5 with this announcement 😜
Samsung TV owners out here lingering in our non-dynamic HDR world 😐

Speaking of storage, I have the 32GB 4k model and haven't come close to filling it. How are people using up so much storage?

I guess to put another way, I have a couple of shields, fire stick 4k, some other devices, built in tv apps, etc and I don't notice a difference in HDR/DV content compared to those. It's all very similar.
Like I said, i've heard it talked about but i've never seen the issue.

It's glaringly evident on my Sony A1E and I believe on LG's as well. I'm only talking about the Apple TV 4K I can't speak to the other devices you mention.

No idea what Thread support is and I can’t receive those TV channels in my location. I don’t know what I was expecting because I don’t know what the purpose of the Apple TV is anymore. I can get TV+ through an app on my smart TV.

Thread has to do with HomeKit functions:

I'm not personally into sports, but I am a subscriber to Paramount+ and Peacock, and they could offer that on other programming in the future.

Personally, I'm hoping that Apple will start offering high frame rates on the TV app, like "Gemini Man" and "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk", which was filmed in 120hz, but presented in 60hz on 4K UltraHD Blu-ray. Maybe start offering a high frame rate on nature documentaries for Apple TV+.

Also, Apple's bitrates are higher on the Apple TV versus watching Apple TV+ on any smart TV.

Mind almost blown. My rokus don't have a button on top. I have older Roku 3's.
Interesting! I didn’t know that. I have an original Roku 4, must be about 5 years old, got it when it first came out. My dad’s Roku 3 also dings when you push the button. Thought they all did. Live and learn. Still, point remains, it’s not a new idea, Apple could have incorporated it. Our kids are always losing the damned appletv remote.

Do you think it’s going to have a higher bit rate audio support for things like Tidal, Amazon music HD and for heaven sake‘s maybe apples own high resolution audio one day.

I've had no performance issues with my three current Apple TV 4Ks, and I don't watch sports, so the higher frame rate support is of little interest to me. But I will definitely pick up the new remote for our main room. And I'm happy to read the calibration feature will work with the current generation, too!

Dang! Mine are 32gb and i've never had storage issues. And I feel like I have a ton of apps downloaded. I can scroll the apps I have downloaded for days. You must have a ton of games downloaded?

Speaking of storage, I have the 32GB 4k model and haven't come close to filling it. How are people using up so much storage?
If one is just using streaming apps, and maybe a few simple one-button jump games, then I can see why 32GB would be more than enough storage.

But... If the ATV is supposed to be a gaming box for Apple Arcade, then 32GB and 64GB isn't enough.

Just downloading some of the big games along with 4K Aerials would fill the 32GB. Look on the App Store or Apple Arcade at some of the big titles' size.

Oceanhorn 2 horn alone can be almost 10% of the total 32GB ATV storage, and this isn't even close to the biggest games just on Apple Arcade.

So, a handful of some big games, aerials, with some streaming apps, all mixed with how the tvOS handles cached data could definitely take up the 32GB of data.

Start downloading a lot of the big games, then you might start seeing the out of storage messages even on the 64GB ATV.

I understand the extra cost for the unique Apple features, but $180? It gets harder and harder to justify an Apple TV when the competition is so much less. Roku just announced a 4K box for $40. If all I really want is streaming, why buy an Apple TV? (I say this as a previous Apple TV owner. I loved that box, but in the future I’ll probably go with Roku)

There's a handful of movies out there that were filmed in high frame rates, but I really expect Apple to try and push high frame rates on some of their original programming in the future... documentaries in particular.

You may not be interested in it now, but the higher frame rates might be of interest to you later. Ditto for other potential upgrades coming from the HDMI 2.1 bump in the future as you upgrade your other equipment.

I’d love to find out whether the “Adjust colour balance” feature will be available on the current Apple TV 4K. I’m guessing it won’t be but I don’t see a technical limitation to why it couldn’t be available.

The ATV is expensive, but IMO it's worth it. The UI is much better and the unit is more responsive. You also get the highest 4K bitrates for iTunes/Apple TV content. High quality apps like Infuse aren't available on Roku. And you aren't constantly tracked and bombarded with ads like on Roku ...

Looks like apple was reading comments in here for years and finally listened about the remote.
mute button. No more touch wheel. Clicks buttons. On off button. No more black so easier to not lose. Easier to find what orientation it is. fast Forward and rewind like the old click wheels was an added bonus.
Please apple silently give us passthrough audio on our own content
Seriously, I feel like Apple is (slowly) transitioning from the “we know better than you” to “let’s give customers less reasons not to buy this”. If they actually bring back HDMI and SD slot on the 16” MB Pro, that will be more solid proof.

I find the video quality to be top notch. The upscaler is very good in the ATV. I prefer the UI. Match framerate and color space. A variety of other features. I like it enough to pay the premium. But if you're happy with one of the cheaper options then by all means, go for that.
I have a bunch of different streaming devices but the ATV is what we use 99.5% of the time.
