I wish I could trade in my current 4K Apple TVs for a discount, got 2 at home right now and paying full price for these newer ones doesn't seem worth it.

yeah Totally agree for streaming it’s overkill. I was just hoping for a “pro” model that might be a great enhancement for Apple Arcade.
Agree. Wonder if this means a more powerful one will come in the somewhat near future or if Apple just don't think we need more graphics power for the games that will be in Apple Arcade? The latter I don't agree with at all, since there is a bunch of them now that's quite demanding.

Of course, they could also just artificially cap tvOS for this new ATV to 60Hz so they have room for another gen with 120Hz support.

That’s what I’m saying. It’s an HDMI 2.1 port, so it’s able to support up to 4K 120fps. Apple has seemingly capped it to 4K 60fps for whatever reason, whether it’s because the A12 can’t handle anything higher or because of lack of content. It’s anyone’s guess. But theoretically, all that’s stopping ‘full’ HDMI 2.1 would be some future tvOS update on this device.

Boo! Hiss! I was really hoping for some crazy powerful Apple TV. Maybe they put it off because of chip shortage? Sad. At least they announced something lol.

I have an LG B6 and never noticed this. I've heard people talk about it but it's never seemed too dim to me.

Yeah it's a well documented issue. HDR/DV content from the Apple TV 4K is significantly dimmer vs the built in apps on my Android TV interface on OLED's. I believe this had to do with some TV's using player led HDR/DV processing (i.e. handing off all the processing to the external device) vs TV led processing.

I'm wondering if this a software issue and can be rectified via software or a hardware limitation on either the TV or Player side. Either way I'm going to pick up a new Apple TV 4K for testing to see if it's fixed. Also interested to know if the new calibration method is limited to the new model.

Does it support TrueHD / DTS-HD MA bit streaming? I.E. lossless audio with spacial metadata?

The current PCM output (with Atmos metadata where applicable) *is* a lossless conversion even without bitstreaming. One thing that's missing is the ability to play TrueHD/DTS-HD MA tracks with Atmos in 3rd party apps, but that's a software issue. Since Apple itself doesn't use these codecs (they use E-AC3 for their Atmos tracks), adding this is probably not a high priority for them.

From post 1:
“The addition of the A12 Bionic Chip provides a significant boost in graphics performance, video decoding, and audio processing.”

Not clear what significant boost in audio processing happened.

I guess to put another way, I have a couple of shields, fire stick 4k, some other devices, built in tv apps, etc and I don't notice a difference in HDR/DV content compared to those. It's all very similar.
Like I said, i've heard it talked about but i've never seen the issue.

Maybe they will have spacial audio for the Airpods eventually. Just decoding audio streams doesn't require much performance.

Oh good, Checking the store app, it says the new Siri Remote is compatible with the current Apple TV 4K that is out.

Also can buy the remote separately

Thank god, because i REALLY don't like the current remote.

That's nothing. I have 3 ATV3s and 1 (soon 2) ATV4s sitting in a closet that I don't use anymore after various upgrades. :p

I'm a sports fan. Current setup is LG 65CX and Apple TV 4K. I want to know exactly how the new version could improve the live sports experience, namely, on the Canadian streaming services--DAZN, SN, and TSN. Will the movement be smoother with less motion blur? Complete amateur on graphics and signal here.
