$20 upgrade for an Ethernet port 😂

There was a time when we had to pay for Wi-Fi, understandably, but this is just ridiculous.
It also doubles the storage.
Given that yesterday for $149 you got an Apple TV HD with 32GB of storage and an A8 from 2015, and today for $149 you get 4K with 128GB of storage and an A15 from 2021, I’d call it a win.
We’re talking about quadruple the storage and a seven year newer processor.

The ethernet model also has Thread networking support. Not sure why it's left out of the cheaper version. It's not like you need ethernet for Thread. Not sure I will upgrade from my 2021 Apple TV 4K, but I'm happy to see the remote with USB-C.

USB-C all the things.
I think the 2021 would be perfectly fine :D not a big reason to upgrade. And you charge the remote once every 3 or 6 months right?

What’s the point of the a15 there’s nothing on the Apple TV that needs a cpu update the games run on older ones fine

But this makes sense to have the HW first.

It wouldn’t make any sense at all to have a tvOS app that the HW couldn’t play it.

Maybe the A15 is for future games?
Also, there are some games on Apple Arcade that the A12 in the 2021 ATV4K2 struggle with, there are some forum posts about them. Asphalt8+ is one. The A15 shouldn’t have any issues with anything on AA.

Ironically, the A10X in the 2017 ATV4K1 doesn’t have the gaming performance issues that the A12 ATV has.

Is there any reason I would need this is I own the 2021 Apple TV? I upgraded to that one from the previous Apple TV 4K strictly for Wi-Fi 6 compatibility.

“And coming later this year, new Siri voice recognition for up to six family members lets Apple TV 4K know who’s talking and reply with custom recommendations tailored just for them.”

$129 or £149 - typical money grabbing Apple

Not sure why we have to do this every bloody time, but the UK price includes the VAT where the US price does not include applicable sales taxes. It also doesn't help the GBP's value has cratered compared to the USD.

Here in Seattle, that $129 translates to $142 after factoring in our 10% combined sales taxes.

If I upgrade to 4K how do I see the difference my phone shows 4K but does the apple model show 4K when selecting a film? Any screen shots to see comparison?

Not quite, has removed ethernet, thread and reduced space to 64GB for $129. $149 for the ATV with those.
Either way, it’s still a price reduction.
Yesterday:
$149: Apple TV HD 32 GB
$179: Apple TV 4K 32GB
$199: Apple TV 4K 64GB
Given that today, for $50 less you can get 128 GB, and it comes with a newer processor, thread, USB-C and ethernet, it’s still a price reduction.

Why the heck is ethernet optional?!

Many people have their Internet router and main TV in the same location because that's where the cable line comes in. TVs and streaming boxes should always have an ethernet port so you can plug it in if possible. This is not only faster but reduces usage of WiFi bandwidth, resulting in better performance for other devices.

Why is Apple starting to make basic wired connectivity optional on non-portable devices? They did the same with the iMac; the cheapest model lacks Ethernet.
It sounds like you should consider the upgraded version with Ethernet, huh?

I wish Apple started taking more risks and stopped increasing prices and removing features.
it’s literally cheaper, even with the ethernet port.
The old ATV4K was $179 and $199, the new ones are $129 and $149, and both double the storage of their predecessors.
Apple literally cuts prices while doubling the storage and upgrading the CPU and people *still* complain

It's still $50 less expensive than the previous 64GB Apple TV 4K was when it was introduced, $30 cheaper than the previous 32GB, and includes 128GB RAM plus Thread support. Pretty darn good deal if you ask me.
