Insanely huge disappointment for me, really wanted to get an updated interface with new hardware. All we really got was some updated hardware with a minor facelift to the interface. I don't care about the remote or siri, there's an app on the phone that can do all that stuff anyway and control Apple TV. Play games? Nah that's why I have a console like xbox to play on. Most app based games are still years away from prime time competition with xbox/playstation.

there is an updated interface with new hardware. Baffling why you would want to use an App on the phone instead of a remote
I guess I'm the only one here without a 4K TV and mountains of 4K content to watch?

4K TVs will only drop in price and the content (which appears to be sparse at the moment) will only increase in time. Plus, we have Apple's new streaming platform to look forward to; they're not nearly finished with the Apple TV. An entire app store and developer support isn't a "minor update." Every other device with an app store is updated on a regular basis, so don't think you have to wait 3 years for the next Apple TV. This isn't Apple's hobby project anymore, so expect to see a refresh more often.

Doesn't matter what Apple does for some, there are trolls here that obviously either work for other companies or will never be happy.

I cant for the life of me understand why folks don't get this. 4k is tiny...very tiny part of the market...true 4k will come and it will surely be everywhere including ATV.

Right now you have mostly "faux-k" (pixel splitting) TVs in homes and very little 4k content. With all teh 4k whining I read I wonder how many of those folks have true 4k TVs and somehow find lots of real 4k content...
False, absolutely false. The majority of 4K tv's being produced are not "faux-k" You really need to check the specs on the tv's. 3840 x 2160 is twice as many pixels as 1920 x 1080. Yes. technically, 4K is 4096 x 2160, but the tv industry has agreed that 3840 x 2160 will be the industry standard for 4K. Secondly, 4K with HDR is amazing. Until you see it, you have no idea what you are missing. The fact that the ATV can not do 4K or HDR, is a failure. many shows are now being done with 4k cameras, even though the broadcasters are still stuck in 1080i and 720p world. That will allow those of us who stream, to actually see the shows in 4k when they reach Netflix. It will look a lot better than current HD. Fox has said from this point forward, all movies will be done in HDR. Apple missed the boat.

The sad part is that the new Apple TV will be outdated before it is even released. The next Fire TV will have 4k and its release is imminent (it just showed up on the FCC site and the old Fire TV is out of stock on Amazon).

If and only iff you define "outdated" as not supporting a smattering of 4k content, then I guess you are right.

On a similar note, MacBooks have been obsolete for the past decade because they haven't supported BluRay, and all Ferraris sold today are obsolete because they run on ground-based hydrocarbons.

If you have a 4k TV and the draw of 4k content draws you to other boxes, that's how you'll make your decision. Presupposing an eventual mass market move to 4k sets, there are still a lot of folks a lot of years away from buying a 4k TV, and that is a vast majority of the set top box marketplace.

I wish there were some easy way to watch "live" tv for channels such as NBC/CBS/ABC/FOX. They might be able to come out with individual apps to do this, but I wish there was the option to watch TV in the more "traditional" sense flipping through live channels.

To everyone complaining about 4k. 1) Do you have a 4k TV? 2) What 4k content do you currently watch?

Netflix has several shows - incl. House of Cards

Doesn't seem like many noticed this but there's two new remotes for the new Apple TV. One with Siri integration for supported countries and one without, for the countries that don't support it.

"The Apple TV Remote comes in two flavors—one with Siri built in and the other with onscreen search capabilities. The Siri Remote is available in the following countries:

  • Australia

  • Canada

  • France

  • Germany

  • Japan

  • Spain

  • United Kingdom

  • United States
Apple TVs in all other countries are packaged with the Apple TV Remote."

"We look at the tablet and think it's going to fail..."

"7 inch tablets are dead on arrival.."

"If you see a stylus or task manager, they blew it..."

You don't need 4k, like you didn't need LTE, like you didn't need 1080p etc etc.

4k will come in a couple of years when everyone else is moving on.

For those of us running a Synology NAS they have a bunch of IOS apps like DS Video, DS Audio and DS Photo. If these were available on the new Apple TV then you could play your movie music and photo files without any need for itunes or any other computer.

true,,,, I have a QNAP and run the iTunes server for my music, but still have a mac mini to handle the movies.

I was hoping they would have an antennae input. Unfortunately, no.

I have been thinking about an App with your local broadcast - considered an antenna input but even better would be an antenna with a signal that would interact with an app. and if the creator could have access to a TV listing service to populate the search...

Another nice one related would be a "TV Guide" app where you would set it up to give it all your "live" apps...including local broadcast...and it would create a guide for what is on now....

Well it's just one thing that wasn't needed. The new interface isn't much of a change, it needed to be a massive change. Just updating the internals and saying here we changed a few graphics isn't great at all. And for Tim to come out and say this is the future of tv.. ahh no. The concept is the future, the way Apple went about it with a clunky interface that's pretty much half-assed isn't! Not to mention the Apple Watch was originally said to be able to control Apple TV and use Siri so again why are they so big on adding a remote with those features? Is it for those who don't have an iphone/ipad/apple watch? Probably the only reason I can think of.

Just really wish they changed the interface, maybe next year with IOS X they'll change everything across the board, guess we shall see what happens. I'm holding off getting this apple tv as there's nothing about it that screams PURCHASE ME!

Seriously no 4k? Well looks like I may be waiting this one out.

It's not possible... yet.

1. The iPhone 6S only got 4K this year. The guts of this AppleTV is similar to the 6.
2. It has one USB-C port. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the port is likely to plug in an external hard drive a-la game console/PVR. Otherwise there isn't enough storage to store a 4K video, and streaming one isn't possible yet because "broadband" is defined as 25Mbps as of Jan 2015, and the average ISP isn't offering 25Mbps as baseline. 4K requires 25Mbps (Netflix requires 25Mbps for UHD)
3. HDMI 1.4 can't do 4K @ 60fps, and Everyone who bought a UHD television before HDMI 2.0a has this, which only came out this year (HDMI 2.0 was 2013 but TV's have a slow production pipe.) 4K@60fps requires HDMI 2.0(a) or Displayport.

Even devices like the GoPro can't do 4Kp60

So a "30fps" experience on a TV is miserable when an iPhone or iPad app/game runs at the screen's native resolution and refresh rate (60fps.) It's a poor experience to switch between 4K UHD and 1080p, and we know the ARM parts aren't really capable of rendering software at 4K. Sure you "might" playback 4K video with the existing ARM parts using the dedicated decoder/encoder, but that does nothing for the rest of the software.

Are people really surprised about lack of 4K? I've yet to meet anyone with a 4K telly, there is still loads of content thats not even HD and the internet would grind to a halt if we all started streaming 4K. I'd be happy if there was a Synology app that i could easily stream all the DVD rips that I took years to do on my NAS.

I don't know if it was already been said. but all AppleTV apps need to be 200mb and lower in size. If you want to have bigger apps, you need to stream ressources...

This might be a problem for games. Porting game might not be possible !

Cool, does your Roku play iTunes music?
why would someone wanna use their tv to play music is beyond me. plus with the roku you get a private channel like machtv and get all ppv events, HBO,DISCOVERY CH, A&E,ESPN,SKY SPORTS, ETC... and all NFL,NBA,NHL,MLB games in HD all for about 20.00a month. thanks but no thanks no apple tv for me

Agree to 4K and local media search, though an app might remedy the search thing to some extent. No 4K is a deal breaker for sure - what were they thinking?
The were thinking the same thingI'm thinking: 4K is on the horizon but not yet in many people's homes. Heck, my cable company barely has HD. Right now I don't see any 4K content available on iTunes, or anywhere else. I'm sure it's out there but I don't see it anywhere. And to be honest it takes long enough to download an HD film. 4K? I don't have the bandwidth. Oh, 4K will take over someday, but by then I'll be on the next AppleTV box, or the one after that. For most of us 4K is where HD was in the late '90s, about a decade away.
