+1 was a bit worried when i didn't see a "computers" app... maybe we will know when the SDK is released later.

was there a podcasts App shown? my guess is these things are now integrated into other Apps. Home sharing is the only way i can access local content, Plex does not work for me, never finds all my files and takes forever to scan folders

I'm pretty satisfied with the new aTV. It should have had an app store for YEARS!

But I'm not sold on voice search. Perhaps I'm an old goat at 33 years old, but I'm not ready to start talking to devices.. I know it will be faster than typing, but I would still like an alternative..

Monoprice makes a HDMI switch that has TOSlink out for audio.
not the most elegant solution (needing to have an extra device) but it works pretty well.

I will need this to, as tos link gone. But I switch around hdmi input AND a tos switcher to. I read one on Amazon is good, but some say you had to unplug it to get to get it to work, as in can't leave the switcher on? What do you use?

I hope the home sharing is there, if not, NO buy. I got Apple TV for home sharing first and foremost. If you look here : http://www.apple.com/tv/specs/ the tech specs mention home sharing, I hope it is stays.

Disappointing. Overhyped. Expanded storage and an App Store.

Unless all of that can be overlaid against live TV, or have the ability to display live TV (by an app) without having to switch inputs back and forth, it won't revolutionize TV.

Agreed completely. Maybe I'm in the minority but one of my favorite features of the Xbox One is the HDMI pass-through allowing me to move in and out of live tv, apps, and games and to 'snap' that content off to the side when needed. I only switch inputs when it's time to AirPlay content to my older AppleTV. Would have loved to daisy-chain these devices (if lag wasn't an issue, of course). To me this truly feels like 'the future of television' (and believe me I always have to do a double-take saying that in reference to a Microsoft product)

I get that they want to prepare the market for the subscription service down the line, but still bummed nonetheless.

Seriously though, there is no content that I am aware of that is 4K not to mention only a small percentage of users will even have a 4K TV. Add to that the enormous bandwidth needed to stream it and it's no wonder it doesn't have it.

Another of the same kind of excuses from back in the "720p is good enough days". 4K needs 4K-playing hardware for the masses. Sell millions of 4K players and 4K content owners will bend over backwards to try to cash in on that opportunity. As is right now, why bother making much available at 4K when there's hardly any easy (mainstream) way for the masses to play it?

Visit Best Buy or similar. There's a LOT of 4K TVs for sale. Prices are lower than what those who haven't shopped lately think.

And there IS 4K content available. Do a search and you'll find it. Youtube has some. Netflix. Camcorders and cameras have been able to shoot 4K for a couple of years now. It's out there. And soon tens of millions of us that buy new iPhones will be shooting videos in 4K and the segment that has- or now buys- a 4K TV is going to desire an Apple way to play that 4K at 4K on their 4K TV that does not involve hooking their phones to their TVs.

Apple has the best interface in choosing the music from my library with the Remote App, at least from what I've seen from other products. I look forward to using Siri to choose music, if it would be able to correctly identify the artists I listen to. Japanese names may not be as easy to identify as English names, but I hope it can do it.

Now if I ask Siri to play "Erina Mano" it looks for 'Arena Mano' or something...
I wonder how it will do with "Kyary Pamyu Pamyu" if it will match with "Carrie Pamyu Pamyu"
and what will it do with "Leo Ieiri" and some other names!

I will keep my fingers crossed that this will work as it would be very cool!

HDMI 1.4 makes the hardware maximum 1080p with no chance of 4K even with a firmware upgrade - what a shame, a lovely interface crippled with backwards spec

Great question! They spent a great deal of time telling us how great the A9 is for CPU and Graphics. Given the increased price point as well as the focus on gaming for the AppleTV this sure seems like a no-brainer. That said, there could be a lot of non-technical reasons - such as A9 production capacity - that made the A8 a better choice. We've been bitching for years about an update and I don't really think they could survive another miss. This at least sets them up for additional future upgrades.

Ummmm... all that new shiz is great, but how do I access the content I already, you know, own?!

I feel like with the new music app, and now the disappearance of home sharing and iTunes library integration on the AppleTV, Apple is nothing more than a shill, and their interfaces are nothing more than a tool to get me to buy new crap and burn my data cap.

Maybe they have a way to handle it that will surface as more details become available, but I just scimmed all of apple ATV promo pages and didn't see a single mention of viewing content from your local iTunes library. Houston, we may have a problem.

UPDATE: OK, this makes me a little less worried, maybe cautiously optimistic... http://www.apple.com/tv/specs/ "System Requirements - iTunes purchasing and renting and Home Sharing require iTunes Store account"

I want one but I didn't see a "Computers" app so I can watch the dvd sets that took forever to rip. That's a bit concerning.

I thought I saw a brief screen flash and a mention of the current menu options still being there. The current Apple TV will still be available.

I could care less about 4k. Apple gave me an App Store. That's what matters. A game controller would have been nice. But there are other options in that area. I'll be getting the new one.

I have to agree with those that are a bit disappointed. I was hoping for something a bit more... My overall impression was that this seemed to just be an update to mimic the functionality of the Amazon Fire TV (just replace Prime with iTunes). I will buy one because i like ATV's and i'm in the Apple eco system but as a piece of tech this doesn't progress the market any further than it's current state and in some cases doesn't even match specs from other devices (4k is an obvious one). If they allow Siri search for all apps including Plex then i'll be happy but i'm not 100% sure this is on the cards; they couldn't make it work on Fire TV and it seems to me Siri works in the same way so i don't think it will be on this either. Not to mention the fact there is no confirmation yet of iTunes home sharing, but i'm hoping this is just an oversight and it's built into one of the other apps...... (forever an optimist!)

This is nothing new. The first Apple TV only supported 720p when everyone else was doing 1080p.

I think the important issue here is that you cannot view 4K content within the Apple ecosystem on a large screen but you can generate the content with the new iPhone 6s. So, that leaves a big gap since the place you really need 4K content is on big screens. Thus, you have to leave the Apple ecosystem to view content you created in the Apple ecosystem.

This suggests poor planning and execution by the Apple TV team.

You can watch and listen to your content. I am doing that now without plex, on my Apple TV. You do need another computer running though, just like you do with plex running plex server.

Computer running iTunes
Apple tv
Home sharing turned on

Your content is now available on your apple tv.

Ah, gotcha. I too hope they don't take that away. I don't see them doing that, but one never knows. Heck I would equate them doing that to the music side. Sorry you can only play stuff you purchased from Apple.... Oh boy.....

For those of us running a Synology NAS they have a bunch of IOS apps like DS Video, DS Audio and DS Photo. If these were available on the new Apple TV then you could play your movie music and photo files without any need for itunes or any other computer.
