If they give us an SE2 I'll get a ipad mini 5 and ditch the plus phone.

Failing that it's a refurb 10.5 or continue to hold for the right iphone.

Anyone use the mini for comics? Is it OK or hell?

I love ComiXology on mine. Google this but the 4 had some of the best resolution because of the limitations of human eyes v pixel density blah blah. In real use the display performed better than higher density displays.

Err no. If a single person buys highly redundant products then have a problem. If buy different ones across the ecosystem then you don't. One person two 2018 era iPhones ( e.g. an XR and a XS) versus. One person and a iPhone XS and iPad Mini ( or iPhone XR and iPad Pro both 2018 or iPhone XS Max , MacbookPro , AppleTV , and iPad AIR 2019 ).

If already have an iPad Pro why do you need a mini in a single person scenario? If have way above average disposable income to buy multiple iPad that you can't use at the same time how come go Scrooge McDuck when comes to buying another pencil at a fraction of the cost of buying that second, highly redundant iPad?

It might seem redundant to you. But Hey, everyone is different. I have an ipad pro, but I also have an ipad mini for when I wanna go fast and light. I am glad the mini finally got pencil support. As an artist, it really makes a great travel size digital sketchbook. However, i do wish it had Apple pencil 2 support. It’s not a money thing. Yes, i can afford to buy a first gen pencil in addition to the #2 i already own. It’s more a convenience thing. Would be nice to be able to share my apple pencil 2 between devices. Plus i will miss the pencil 2 charging method when using the new mini. But what can ya do. It is what it is. For now.

A price cut would have been nice, but I can’t complain too much. iPad Mini w/Pencil suppport is what I wished for.

Yes Apple now consider themselves beyond having to do any actual work to get people to buy their products.

then it would increase the price of the product even more which no one would buy and cause this product line to fail.

need to minimize the amount of R&D for this product to keep prices low.

Believe it or not, there ARE people out there who want newer generations of devices to look different so that they don't get confused with the older ones. (I'm not one of those people)

One of the greatest criticisms of the iPhone SE when it was first released was that it physically looked identical to the iPhone 5S and they were concerned that others would think they owned the older 5S rather than a brand new SE.
Which tells me it's all about STATUS. SMH.

Odd/disappointing that it doesn’t support Pencil 2, though.
It's not odd at all. The Pencil 2 uses a magnetic connector to charge it. The new 2018 iPad Pro chassis is designed for that. The iPad Mini 4 chassis does not. In order to support the Pencil 2 in the new Mini, Apple would have needed to redesign the chassis and retool the manufacturing line to build this new chassis. That would've added to the cost. It would also have to include ProMotion which would add even more to the cost.

Why wouldn't it?
Because other companies figured out how to update their stores without shutting the site down more than 20 years down. Apparently Apple is OK with inconveniencing their customers. They probably believe that the customers need to endure a little bit of abuse otherwise they stop respecting you.

2. Owning multiple iPads by a single person probably is not fairly common. Families owning multiple iPads isn't probably fairly common either across full income demographics, but if have two people using iPads concurrently then one pencil isn't going to work most of the time either.

Is that true? I would be curious to know why you say it's uncommon for a single person to own multiple iPads, especially since they come in different sizes. I have three personally, and there are nine in my household of four. We're probably outliers in that regard, but I would expect there to be a fair number of people who would be interested both in the mini and the pro.

Wow! I thought I had read every whine, complaint, and gripe under the sun, and I didn’t think I was going to see a new one today......thanks!!

It's not a new complain. Apple has been doing it as long as they had their store. Perhaps it made sense 10 years ago when iPhone was still a big thing (to create some hype during product release) but when they update a CPU in an outdated model and shut down a store for it this is just comical.

Of course it’s not a new thing Apple does..... I’ve just never seen anyone complain about it before, ever. And I LOVE surprises, so thanks again!

This seems like an odd take. Different sized iPads naturally excel at different purposes. The large iPad Pro is an outstanding professional tool for graphic design, but hardly something you'll pick up for a quick read on the train. The iPad mini is great for one-handed book reading and a nice graphic remote control for TVs, but not what most people would choose for photo editing. That's why lots of people I know have multiple iPads -- they grab the one that fits what they are planning to do with it at that moment.

no sale unless apple does some trade in deal. Trade in mini 4 for $200 off this.

They do have a trade in program here in the US....got $76 for an old Mini 2 I’m not using, but since they were offering only $125 for my 64gb Mini 4 Cellular I decided to keep it as a backup.

Eh, If it had the same design with faceid as the 2018 pro and support for the 2nd gen pencil i'd have bought one just to keep around the house as a companion to my 12.9" pro but im not interested in this.

I sold my iPad Mini 4 a few months ago. I used to use it to read the news at work in the office but now use the 11” Pro. I’m not sure I’ll go back to the mini but if they’d get rid of the bezels I’d be back like a shot. Also, I’m kind of used to the 11 Pro now so there’s that too.

Between the inevitable upcoming sale and current trade-in values, you should be able to easily get $200 off. I'm expecting to be able to trade my Mini 4 in and get the Mini 5 on sale for a net of $175 out of pocket.

The even larger number of pre 2018 iPad Pro owners can make exactly opposite argument since many of them already have a Pencil 1 and do not have a Pencil 2. A mini with a Pencil 2 would have to make them buy a new Pencil device.

What is substantially bigger at this point: the previous 3 years of iPad Pro sales or the ones sold over last 6 months?

If want to make the "I bought a Pencil I'm now anchored" argument, then Pencil 2 is smaller. Much smaller ( probably on the order of magnitude if factor in the regular iPad sales over the last year or so. )

Plus i will miss the pencil 2 charging method when using the new mini. But what can ya do. It is what it is. For now.

There are going to be lots folks who buy a new Mini and don't buy a Pencil. There is complaints in this thread about how the storage capacity dropped in the new Mini ( versus the revised baseline Apple had set up over last couple of years). Pencils 2 infrastructure costs pushed onto folks who aren't going to use it is in the same "everyone is different" category. In the price zone that the Mini is in, the Pencil 1 is dominant right now and probably for the immediate future.

Who are the bigger block of folks who will be buy what matters (everybody is also not 100% different). Not the narrowest of corner cases. Multiple iPad single owners with Pencil 2 is a corner case.

If Pencil 2 infrastructure was cheaper and smaller internal iPad volume than Pencil 1 then sure it could be fast tracked with minimal interactions. It isn't; actually opposite on both fronts. More internal volume and more expensive. Pushing the iPad Mini further up against the iPad Air prince point isn't going to help the Mini. Pencil support is a feature of the Mini. It isn't the primary broad spectrum driver.

It is more convenient, but that connivence has substantive side effect right now. It isn't purely about segmentation. More than a few folks don't want to pay more. Cost isn't 'spin' or an immaterial factor.

Bestuby right now it only offering $110 for my 128gb cellular mini4, which is the top spec.

Im hoping they will offer atleast 175 soon, while also dropping mini5 $75-100. That’ll be worth the trade in for me.

It's actually a very SANE take...compared to most of the whining here and elsewhere about people complaining about products they don't have a use for. This new mini will very much fit into a role I can use it in...

When I log into Best Buy, they're currently offering me $110 for my 32GB Mini 4 in Space Gray. $75 off on a sale is easily going to happen. Keep regularly checking those trade-in values! When they tweak them, they don't last long. :)
