Presumably with two less tweeters and improved efficiencies in manufacturing, this new HomePod is cheaper to make with margins high enough for Tim to green light it.

I always wonder when they do these ads do the actors know what they're promoting.

"Hey all, just dance around - we can't tell you what ad you're in but here's a couple of hundred to keep quiet about it!"

As for price, still too high at $399 Canadian. Come on Tim, what have you got against Canada? Did you get traumatized by a moose or beaver as a kid?

I don't even use mine as smart speakers much. Mostly use them convenient wireless tv speakers that play music usually from the iPhone that I once awhile move to a different room for a special occasion.
Makes for an interesting use case, but if it works then why not? I already have all the sound bar and sub I need (which I link to my iPhone for music), a handful of "dumb" portable speakers as well - these things (same with Alexa speakers or those from Google) really fit no need of mine.

Temperature and humidity

With its built-in sensor, HomePod can detect and tell you the temperature and humidity of the room.
And you can set it in automations so the blinds close if the temperature hits 80 degrees.
Great timing! Apple! I Just dropped 260 pounds on Netatmo Temp modules for whole apartment. Already have 4 HomePod minis. Which are apparently having their temp sensor activated! So annoying that they hide this feature since 2020 and now decide to activate it! Not too mad if honest, as bought the Netatmo for the CO2 detectors. Now need Apple to fix HomeKit as still have broken HomeKit items and had to remove my LinkSys Mesh router from HomeKit altogether as advised by LinkSys due to latest update. If anyone notices blue flashing light on child nodes and unstable internet! its due to Apples botched HomeKit update! Side note, small print says sound detection will be made available at a later date! and REQUIRES all devices to be running lasted architecture! SO there is hope that with this new product, it also means 16.3 has a HomeKit fix..

So it’s exactly the same but with an updated chip? No removable power cord? No aux input? Wut?

Did I miss something?
Did anyone ever complain the old one was too slow? Don't see why it needs an updated chip. The lack of easy integration with non-Apple music services was the killer for the old one.

Guess I'll hold out for the Homepod Pro Max

I am glad they brought this back. I have 2 originals and use them daily in a stereo pair with my Apple TV 4k. I know my originals will eventually die so there are replacements available. Price wise wait for the drop it will happen eventually. I paid the full $349 on launch day for one and I got a 2nd one for $199 for stereo pair. Still I use them all the time so they sound incredible and the cost is what it is.

2- thats the point isn’t it?

The product lines are already insanely cluttered and bloated as it is IMO.

I don't think the issue is that they have too many offerings - for example just having a HomePod mini and a regular HomePod isn't really that much clutter, it's a pretty clean offering.

I think the problem is that some of their products make sense individually but the combined product lineup makes no sense as a whole. For example the combination of MacBook Air / MacBook / MacBook Pro was very inconsistent for a long period - which product was targeted at which type of user? Same thing right now with Mac Studio / Mac Mini / Mac Pro.

They update different parts of the lineup at different times and need to be clearer in communicating which product is for which intended user. And they need somebody internally with the authority to tell product teams when they're doing something stupid, like the Magic Mouse charging upside-down or the Pencil charging.

Wild guess: the new chip probably has better audio processing capabilities meaning the quality of Siri recognition and quality of audio processing is probably better than the old one + better networking protocols (Thread, new versions of BlueTooth and wifi), and it extends the lifetime by a few years if you look ahead to supporting future software upgrades.

But if you look at the list, it claims this is on the mini too....so has this been updated also?

The original HomePod should have never been discontinued. I've never seen such a weird confusion about a product ever in my life. People were comparing it to any speaker when it's obvious competition was Sonos like products. It was weird.

"Matter" (which nothing uses), and a temperature sensor....oh and two tweeters less.....

However, spatial audio, stereo pairing and pretty much everything else is the same.

I'll wait for the hands on reviews to see if it still compares audio-wise to the original HomePod (of which I have two in a stereo pair).
