Well I ordered a new iMac. The specs:

24-inch w/ 3.06GHz
4GB RAM
1TB HDD
nVidia GT 130 (512MB)
Wired Keyboard and Mouse (don't care for wireless because it seems I'm always replacing batteries)

This is to replace my Mac Pro. These specs:

Dual 2.66GHz
nVidia 8800GT
4GB RAM
460GB HDD (two drives, one for OS X and one for Windows)
24" Cinema Display

I'm hoping to sell my Mac Pro system for $2500-$3000. Think that's possible?

I sure wish the iMacs had LED. Either way, it's not an upgrade. These options, or very similar options have been on the table for a long time.

Apple has contempt for it's cult. And who can blame them?

If you settle for less, you will always get less.

Get a large group of loyal followers, tell them what they want, and prosper.

Damn I wish OSX were freed ... but this is why it will never happen.

If OSX were allowed to run (legally) on any machine, Apple would never sell a computer.

When the OS is the ball and chain, you have to take what you can get an shut the hell up.

I guess I will do exactly that.

Don't. If you're not happy with what you're getting for your money, then don't buy it. That's exactly the problem. Look into an OS X compatible PC. You'll have to do a bit of research, but there's a quickly growing OS X PC community. http://www.osx86project.org/

2 things will change Apple. People stop buying their overpriced, outdated computers, or they get a new CEO interested in growing their market percentage beyond 10%. It was possible as XP became outdated and later when everyone hated Vista.

1. The rumours that the mini is dead are still correct
2. I'm really glad I got an iMac before this update
3. :apple:

With the Cinema display....I dont see why not.

the base line Mac Mini used to be £391 now its £499, hopefully some idiot has made some mistake using the same number as the american site.

Specs nice, Price they can go shove it!

Sorry, it's the old, old story.

Macs have almost always been too expensive compared to US prices, and much though you US guys seem to point to "Socialist" taxes (get over it, guys!) even when you take into account the difference in posted price due to our UK (and European) VAT rates, Macs (and other manufacturers) have ALWAYS been more expensive over here. the Pound to dollar parity in pricing is back.

Now Apple have basically done what the energy suppliers have been doing. when prices of raw materials go up, end user product prices go up.

When raw materials go down in price, end user prices often stay the same, or fall by a much smaller amount.

I'ts called a Rip-Off, and bang goes the Mac mini I was going to buy.

The story never changes....

I have a couple of questions:

When I configure the 2.93 imac to be same (3ghz + 1tb + remote + iworks + 4850) as the 3ghz one, it comes out to be a little bit cheaper. Why?

How come when I do it through Educational Discount page, I don't get the Apple Care option?

Does anyone have any benchmarks for the GT 130 Geforce?

Is the 4850 same as the desktop PCI-E as on PC's, or is it a mobile version?

Yet another rant

One other thing I had hoped Apple would have updated is their pathetic mouse. I have never understood why Apple can't figure out how to build a decent one. I like the idea of the scroll nib, but it's difficult to maintain. The shape's not very ergonomic; my hand cramps up holding it. And like so much else from Apple, it's overpriced. The first thing I do when I get a Mac is replace the mouse with a Logitech or Kensington or MS ... pretty much anything but Apple.

/rant

so because you have used computers as long as the rest of us you demand "respect"? If you don't want the latest product, no one is forcing you to buy it. No one is making anyone buy "ultimate"....

I don't command respect, but this is an apple forum and I dont want anyone forcing windoze down myy throat, a ok? I have dealt with this people from windoze and they are ****s.

OK people, it's time to grow up. Apple did not increase prices - your currency got worse compared to the US dollar. Too bad. There's nothing Apple can do about it. Blame your government for poor management of your economy.

Do you honestly expect Apple to take a hit because your currency value decreased? That's not really good business sense.

*sigh*

So it's good business sense to increase prices by 25% in the middle of a recession? It's good business sense to annoy the hell out of loyal customers that tend to wave the flag for apple and encourage others to try the kit? It's good business sense to have your range start where places like PC World (our sole remaining big PC retailing chain) start to finish?

Fact is, Windows 7 is coming out very shortly and even someone like me, who currently has a 17" MBP and loves OS X, is looking at these prices in the UK and seriously considering switching back and giving Vista 2.0 a try. It's a kick in the unmentionables right when we didn't need it and considering the UK has been giving Apple a healthy profit margain thanks to the 2:1 $:£ ratio in the last couple of years it would have been nice to see Apple make more of an effort to cushion the blow.

And oh goodness, I hadn't thought of that analog video thing...well..is there....bummer btw...but can't you go..ummm, does your tv have hdmi? if then cant you go, mini display, dvi, dvi to hdmi? But I guess it doesn't so...how about the base 24" imac, not all that bad...(not too good either...I hate how they are doing that whole nvdia for all their line up thing...)

If you already have an HDTV or modern monitor, you're fine. There is/will be a miniDisplayPort to HDMI cable. Both carry the digital video signal. I just have an older TV. I'm not quite well off enough to be a buying a high end monitor or HDTV plus a high end MacBook Pro.

Mini is much

These mini's are the antithesis of the new mac pros: unique form factor with a ton of bang for the buck, and priced just right to treat the consumer to an amazing product that no one else can come close to duplicating. These are out and out amazing again with the addition of more expansion and Nvidia graphics, just like the revelation of the original G4 model when it came out. Apple may have scored some sour points lately with the lack of firewire in the macbook (the only machine apple makes that doesn't support high speed drives, cameras, and audio peripherals) and the tremendously over priced mac pro, but there is still magic in cupertino and they will get back on track soon enough. The imac and mini are amazing, unique machines that are perfect fits for most users needs.

:apple:

I just noticed that the Add on Keyboard and mouse for the mac mini is a $100 upgrade!!!! FTW:eek::mad::eek:

true that .. wasn't it before optional to get either mouse or keyboard
(haven't been checking lately) now you have to take both

at least when i bought my G4 i could get just a keyboard (apple mice )

nice software update

I can not believe Apple are re-releasing Time Capsule when it is a simple firmware update that has been added. Sure I understand this is good for people who haven't got a TC yet, but people like me who have one should be given the respect to get this as an update. I've asked my masters qualified electronic engineer friend if this seems like just a firmware upgrade and he agrees. TC has two antennas, one for 2.4GHz and one for 5GHz, it has been a disgrace since it's release that it hasn't been able to use both at the same time like so many others on the market, and all Apple have done here is enable it.
The mobile me integration is brilliant, but again, I pay for mobile me, why am I not getting this already??
I could be proven wrong over the next few days when a new firmware pops up on my screen and all is well, but somehow I don't think so...

As I'm feeling lazy does Apple's website say anything about the ODD being SATA on either the new iMac or Mac Mini as the rumors said they were going to be?

Edit: with the new 2TB 3.5" HDDs you could in theory put 4TB in an iMac, pretty impressive, although not sure of the need for it, but still... and 1TB into a Mac Mini

Well back in November I predicted price rises, but the cheapest Mac mini is £500 and that's without a keyboard, mouse and 2 GBs of RAM. What on earth is Apple thinking?

Also what's with the obsession of sticking a 9400M in every single Mac? Wouldn't be surprised if they dissected a Mac Pro and found a random disconnected one in there. It was good when the MacBook upgraded to a 9400M, but now the iMac? Then they raise the price too by almost £200? What happened to more features, same price point? I hate to whine, but this is a big blow to my purchasing plans. I hope Apple gets their act together by the next revision.

Point taken pal!

years and years...

i have been listening to a great deal of whining for years and years. all the while buying and using mac's since 1991, always appreciating the superior product apple puts out. it is time for all you ingrates to either go buy a dell or hp, and suffer the consequences, or shut up and enjoy what you have; or, wait for the right product to come out of the apple think tank. i for one am always satisfied...

Is too bad Firewire 400 got phased out. Also, the new iMacs confuse me. The entry level processor is much faster but not they have integrated graphics. Is it just me or is the ATI Radeon 2600 HD is better then the nvidia integrated option? Glad to see the Mini is back on the current side (although very little changed if you think about it).

BTW Apple- I am still looking for RAW support on my Panasonic DMC-FZ8 please. Its a top selling camera, lets get going!

Ah, some public dispays of financial and business ignorance. As usual.

Right, the UK pricing is way, way off. The BBC have confirmed the pricing after contacting Apple in a "WTF are you thinking of... do you guys have business degrees?" way. Sadly, the pricing is "strategic".

Apple never rolled with the $/£ exchange when it was good for the £, so to use that as an excuse doesn't cut. And besides: what component parts of UK Macs are made in the US? So that doesn't count either.

This is pure protectionism. Saves short term profits at the expense of growth and future profitability. It makes sense to the Fanboys in the same way it made sense to Bankers of the 1930s. The rest of the world learnt the lesson and became Keynesian.

This move will stifle Apple's growth, but more significantly when the times become good again, Apple will not be in the position to expand in the marketplace.

Just when so many were switching, Apple has taken defeat from the jaws of success.

Of course, if you want more parallells, look at Apple Comp Inc circa 1986-96. Same strategy.

Still the Fanboys might think it's whining. That's ok, but let's just wait and see how the wider buying public - not fanboys - take this.

I have to point out as well, the Radeon 4850 has a TDP of 110W. Unless Apple super underclocked it, why couldn't they put quad-core processors in?

Happy with a 30% price rise on some products?

Sounds like you'd be happy even at your own funeral.
