Will be interesting how they will handle the Studio update as a "full" M2Pro with 32GB costs more than base Studio.
(Which is the reason why I was so sure the Mini wouldn't get the Pro SoC).

Sometimes it is kinda nice to be wrong, and I don't even have buyer's remorse as I would have gone 32GB anyways.....

$500 for the base model Mac Mini with education pricing is the best price, adjusting for inflation, Apple has ever had for a computer. That's one benefit of Apple Silicon. It's also likely something of a loss-leader -- not likely losing Apple money but it almost certainly a low margin device. They make up the margins in upgrades and services.

The original base model Mac Mini launched in 2005 for $500. That's $750 now with inflation. The non-education price is $600, which is 20% cheaper than the original "cheapest Mac ever".

From the press release: “up to two displays on the M2 model, and up to three displays on the M2 Pro model.”
The old M1 mini also supported 2 displays, but only with one DP and one HDMI.

The tech spec page is worded terribly. "One display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K resolution at 60Hz over HDMI". I think this means either (1 TB 6K and 1 TB 5K) OR (1 TB 6K and 1 HDMI 4K).

On a personal note: kind of annoying I just got an M1 to replace my aging 10yo laptop with the Xmas deals. I knew it was due for an update some time 2023, but had pretty much reached my limit on the old machine so not regretting it.

Comparatively I'm guess I'm out the $200 price drop and the support for a simultaneous second TB display. The only other challenge (and probably the most important one) I have had so far has been the limited number of ports, which is unchanged on the base model.

I got a mac mini m1 currently, and actually built a cheap windows Ryzen 5 5600G with 32 gigs of ram. The board did not have UBC C so I added a 3.2 USBC 4x4 card in it. I think I will upgrade my Mac mini m1. The windows desktop is for fun, still like to dabble building. The new price point will make this a no brainer. The Mac mini has been solid.

Hmm … which would you choose?

I dunno if this is a glitch but I’m seeing the M1 Mac mini for $549, not the M2

Which would make sense to me, keep M1 as entry level (it’s plenty fast) and M2 as the high end model.

about to buy. Is 8GB enough RAM for future proofing with M chips? I don’t do any heavy lifting with my daily computing—web, email, word processing, etc.

Dropping the price down to $600 for the base model is nice, the jump for the M2 Pro is a bit high, but strange they didn't offer the M2 Max as well in the Mini?

Don't really understand how people are surprised by this.

Mac Mini = Mx, Mx Pro
Mac Studio = Mx Max, Mx Ultra

That's exactly what I was hoping for, not sure how people are complaining!

Who is upgrading the Pro model to the 19 core GPU?

Would it be better to get 24 core GPU studio at that point?

Appreciate any advice!
