What does this offer me over an m2 in real life usage day to day? Debating this vs m2 at a $200 premium.
It really depends on your upgrade cycle. A used M2 sells for about $200 more than a used M1 these days. If you continually upgrade every 2-3 years you are better off getting an M4 as future resale will be better and you enjoy a faster machine. If you keep them for 6+ years it probably doesn't matter as you are typing it into the ground at that point.. battery is short, out of date etc.

I bought an M2 last year and in checkout couldn’t decided and got starlight. When it arrived. I hated it. Basically looked like a urine stained silver. Took it to store and swapped it for actual silver.
Eeeeewwww😂. Yea not a fan of it either.

I love Space Grey…cry me a river emoji….and 32GB is AMAZING (for longevity and tabs galore).

I’m torn between a 15” MacBook Air and 14” MacBook Pro. But you can’t get base model Pro with 32. You have to go 24 (arguably enough, but why offer 32 on the Air anyways then??¿¿ OR 64 which just makes it INSANELY expensive. So…cry baby emoji I guess.

I don't understand this line of thinking. Why continue to post/frequent a site that so clearly doesn't align with what you want? Apple isn't going to make things for the vocal minority (smaller phones) etc and many billions of people enjoy Apple products and are satisfied with the direction of the company. Why not move on to something that more aligns with your needs?
And why just be complacent with whatever Apple releases instead of having some basic demands?

And billions of people? The laptop market share of Apple is 8% or something so most people actually disagree with the strategy of Apple.

Apple is doing amazing without critical customers and they don’t focus on market share but on high profit margins and that’s completely fair. No offense taken. But most people don’t understand your line of thinking and that’s also completely fair.

No disagreement here, but I want them to release products that I want to buy and will bring them more success. Nobody is asking for them to reinvent the wheel, but the competition is eating their lunch if you care about displays. I bought one of the Asus Qualcomm Snapdragon X powered laptops last fall, it is as fast or faster than my MBP, has an OLED screen, same RAM, same storage, Windows Hello, $700.
True but it has terrible graphics performance. If you don’t need it you good to go. I have to use windows on my work machine, but find macOS so much more reliable.

Explains how this is a catch, you can get the 16/512 for the same price as the older model. You can look at it that way which I don’t agree with or you can say i am getting a free upgrade to 512. Or save money and get the 256. For a lot of people this is fine they don’t need a lot of storage.
Fair enough. However, another way to put it is that the M4 price drop mainly just applies to the 256 GB model.

OTOH, with the poor exchange rate now in Canada vs. the US dollar, pricing in Canada is actually cheaper than in the US, both at retail and at the edu store. Apple chose to swallow that currency exchange hit instead of pass down the hit to Canadian consumers. Currently the conversion rate is 1 CAD = 0.696055 USD or 1 USD = 1.43667 CAD.

US$899 (CA$1292) - USA edu M4 16/256
US$1099 (CA$1579) - USA edu M4 16/512
US$1299 (CA$1866) - USA edu M4 24/512

US$999 (CA$1434) - USA retail M4 16/256
US$1199 (CA$1722) - USA retail M4 16/512
US$1399 (CA$2010) - USA retail M4 24/512

CA$1249 (US$870) - Canada edu M4 16/256
CA$1549 (US$1078) - Canada edu M4 16/512
CA$1849 (US$1287) - Canada edu M4 24/512

CA$1399 (US$974) - Canada retail M4 16/256
CA$1699 (US$1183) - Canada retail M4 16/512
CA$1999 (US$1392) - Canada retail M4 24/512

Pricing is close, but nonetheless the US pricing ranges from about 1% to 3.5% more expensive than the Canadian pricing.

Have you seen them in a store? They’re completely different breeds so I recommend doing that if you haven’t yet. I’m sure the decision will be easy to make then.

I wasn't talking about only laptops but I probably didn't make that clear. And you're right, you shouldn't be complacient but repeatedly complaining about something isn't going to change Apple's mindset. Hitting them in the pocketbook will however.

I'm very surprised you can claim "billions of people are satisfied with the direction Apple is going" yes. Did you get that from Apple Intelligence Siri?
No. I get it from their quarterly reporting and record profits.

That’s unusual, Canada usually costs more for most things. Be glad you are on this kind of position.

Well..I think it's time to finally upgrade my 2015 Intel Macbook Pro lol
Exactly my thoughts. Early 2015 MBP in almost mint condition. Trade in value $85 - wow
I bought one of those in mint condition and new battery (and top case) in 2021 for like $350 (8 GB i5) for my kid. My kid is still fine with it though. Maybe I'll wait until 2027 before replacing that with a MBA.

OTOH, I will be replacing my wife's 2017 MacBook Air this year with an M4.

That happens every few years, especially when there are significant shifts in the exchange rate.

No one is dying because of the old-fashioned displays but it’s perfectly fine to leave a comment to mention why you’re not getting the machine. It’s not to rain on anyone’s parade, it’s going to be a really sweet device for everyone not used to normal refresh rates, it’s just to signal that a lot of people would appreciate it if Apple would change their treatment of potential MBA customers and leaving a comment on a popular fan website is the easiest way to do that.
Sure, this is a discussion forum, and it's totally fair to express disappointment or disagreement with Apple's decision on the display. I'd just also suggest keeping in mind that this is a non-issue for the great majority of users, so I understand Apple's decision to keep the screen as-is. I've never heard a user complain about the Air's screen except on tech discussion forums.

I was wondering why you went 15-->13. I am trying to decide. Having become used to a (old decrepit) 27" iMac, I am trying to image using a laptop again. Was leaning towards 15, but your post caught my eye.
The majority of the time, I’m connected to a 4k 27” monitor, so I figured why spend the extra $200. Also, 13” in a lot more portable. If the laptop was my only screen, I would have stuck with the larger one.

For a chip swap and "finally something in the Studio line" that's all way overdue?

If the innovation were any slower they'd be moving in reverse

These machines don't need any innovation at all. Just gradual improvements every (other) year is enough.

Look at the MBA. It's essentially the same machine today as it was in 2008, which is a great thing. It has only had three large changes, in 2010 , 2020 and 2022.

And yet, it is the best Mac ever produced my Apple.
