This sucks.

The Macbook has no firewire, and no expresscard slot to add one?

For those who want a smaller laptop or can't afford the MBP, this really blows. This new Macbook is worthless...

I'm utterly disappointed. I had dreamed for months of pairing a small MB with my Apogee Duet audio interface for portable recording. How could they do this?

Apple obviously doesn't give a crap about people who produce content... only those who consume it without thought.

Apple... Time to move on.

:apple:

Now I wonder if MBP still will be used for commercials/adds as we have seen it until now. This great eye catching look appealed to everyone, but now I dont think its a case anymore. Will you agree on that?

Along with many others, I am hugely disappointed by the 'update' and have actually started to consider other options...even Windows notebooks. The arrogance behind these choices is astounding. Cutting out firewire for Macbook? Mandatory glossy screens for Pros??

It's hugely contradictory to say that if your working with video you must be a 'Pro', but then slap a 'consumer' style glossy screen on the supposedly Pro laptop.

The design is absolutely vile too. I was dismayed by the iMac when it was announced and it looks ten times worse in laptop form. You only need to look at other Apple products to see how disinterested they are in the Mac these days...both the new Nano and the iPhone are beautiful looking devices. Conversely, the computer line-up looks like ass. It really does come to something when the new Dell XPS range in various colours actually looks a lot better than what Apple are pimping on us.

I really don't know what to make of all this, but I do know that it's a long long way from the clean, classy look of Apple products that first drew me in. Think back to the old white iMacs, white Macbooks (plus black), and the silver Pro range.

Now, everything looks like a *****ty mess. Does anyone feel like dropping up to £1000+ on this??

Have you ever seen a CRT monitor? Mine has practically zero reflectivity and glare. You need to shine a bare bulb directly in front of it to see anything other than 100% pure display.

--Eric

Yep. Good CRTs had good anti-reflective coatings. The mac glass facades on their latest screens, on the other hand, are friggin' mirrors.

"...STOP TELLING US that the shortcomings of the new machines are not a big deal - they most certainly ARE for those of us that actually use our gear for more than killing 3d trolls in some fake universe somewhere....."

BwaaaaHaHaHaHa!!! :D Effing GREAT answer...I think I just peed myself a little!!!

I have been waiting six months for this update and I am extremely disappointed to find that the new MBP's do not support firewire 400. Is it possible to get an adapter that converts from 400 to 800?

Yes, firewire 400 (6-pin) to firewire 800 (9-pin) cable works fine.

The issue is the loss of the 2nd port. Daisy chaining can be unreliable when working with a firewire audio interface and firewire hdd.

I also agree! Apple has gone to far this time. This Fanboy is PO'd.

Don

You can count me in too. Well, apart from matte. Not really arsed about that. Maybe the glass will stop the lid flexing so much.

Hahaha, take this, stupid fart Sony & the whole illegal MPAA/RIAA-mob and your illegal, useless crap DRestrictionM in Blu-Ray:

YESSS! Middle finger to Hollywood and the parasites!
Bwahahahaha!

Middle finger to Jobs AND Apple... after waiting more than a year for several $10,000 tricked out Mac Pros with Blu-Ray, this video and sound editing studio is going PC and taking its $30,000 with it and leaving the iCrap company and fanbois behind.

Apple... time to move on.

Why do they think that this looks good??? Isn't it blatantly obvious how annoying that reflection is. Argh.

For all the Prosumers b*tching; if you're not doing your work with at least a 24" IPS and Wacom you're missing the boat. So who gives a f*** if the display is glossy while you look at pr0n and sip lattes at Starbucks!

It's probably the most ridiculously clueless comment today; really sounds like a comment from some waiter/designer-type loser.

The bad news: Apple, as pros used to know it, is dead. Time to move on.

And where exactly do you suggest we go if we move on?

This would have to be the most horrible keynote I've ever seen. These guys are so enthusiastic they surely fell asleep just afterwards. Steve is either heavily medicated or just not a big fan of the new products he had to introduce.

I'm happy with my 17" MBP which I bought 4 months ago. There surely is no reason to sell. The only great thing I can find is the glass track.

New models but disappointing displays. There is only a 1440 x 900 panel available?

Thank God You Can Run Mac Os On Pc's

Thank God you can run Max OS on PC's.

Not that I will, mind you, I'm so pissed off my entire studio is going PC and Windows all the way. I already have to run friggin' protools in the recording bays just to be compatible.

Forcing glossy on everyone. The nerve. Knowing GD well EVERYONE will want matte in a years' time.

Apple... time to move on.

:apple:

I gotta go in-store to get my new MBP because I gotta pay with many credit card (don't have one with 5k$ cap). Anyway, do you guys think they will have the 320GB - 7200RPM in-store. That's the only thing I want to change, but it's still really important.

"...I'm also a Pro photographer and find that many clients use PCs as well as Macs and that some digital software is PC only, so certainly not designed for Macs primarily. Besides if Apple weren't so up their own fundaments, you wouldnt have the situation where if you want to run PS CS4 64bit you have to use Windows..."

Do you really wanna play that game and compare your life to mine?!!

Yeah...you got me...I live in a MAC ONLY World where every freaking one of my art directors and photo editors is on a Mac and they are usually on those Macs on my shoots, so if I'm NOT on a Mac, I'm at a disadvantage. Are there work-arounds where I could alter my life and become a PC-based doofus, sure...but why do I hafta change my workflow because Apple decides to dump a Firewire port that has become industry standard and only offer a glossy screen option when the only people who like that sorta thing are usually found in their parents basement playing video game tournaments or searching for porn!

LOL - post/visualization firm here, often done at lot higher rez than BD and we never even thought to invest into Macs, never ever, not even for a second. Mac never been a serious contender for high-end video work, middle or rather low-end (editing, motion graphics etc.)

However I really don't see what's your issue with the lack of BD drives: do you have a sw to author? If so then what you're missing? Buy a writer and that's it. Ooops, of course, you can't use it to test your final products on a real-life BD player because it's a different disc...

Blu-Ray... a failed format...

time to move on.

replaceable glass bezel????

i am wondering if the glass bezel on the new notebooks can be easily removed like the one on the iMac? and if so, the plausibility of aftermarket glass bezel with different color borders and extra anti-glare coating could be available. l don't see why not? i would chose a border that best matches the aluminum (my biggest qualm* of the new design being that black border) and the glass be a transistion glass so the glass will turn darker in the sun and blocks out the glare.

edit- also, i am wondering how thick that glass is compared to the iMacs? i know the iMac's can break. long story. i had to have it replaced. but, it's fairly thin and wobbly.

editedit - *besides no FW in the MB
