Put that user-removable hard drive and increased graphics **** in the old macbook Pro bodies, and I'd be happy. The rest of these updates can GTFO.

Seriously, do Apple not understand the idea of target audiences and user bases? The Macbooks are now similar in power to MBPs with their discrete graphics processors, and all of them have that shît glossy screen. Would be a good time to buy a 17" MBP I guess.

I forsee this update turning off a lot of pro creative users. Makes me want even more to build a Hackintosh and just rock my current MBP as long as possible.

After some recent research you can buy 800>400 cables. That sounds pretty good. Still, doesn't excuse the fact that many pro audio users will have to buy them if they want to upgrade.

However, that also doesn't excuse the fact that you can't have a high speed bounce disk running on FW800 whilst your audio connections are running on the FW400 port. I would not expect to buy a 3/4 express card to get around this problem.

It just seems that Apple has ignored a particular market segment for this product (however big it may be). Unless they are pushing for more manufacturers to create FW800 audio devices...

It's looking more to me like they're hoping that things'll go USB and get them off the hook for FW altogether... the omission of FW in the new cinema displays is rather telling, I'm afraid :(

I'm a bit concerned about the viability of any other standard than FW for professional recording though... this marginalization of Apple's FW support has me *very* worried about what the next few years are going to look like for mobile recording :confused::confused::confused::confused:

Glossy screens only..

One useable USB port???

Since the ports are so close to each other, does that mean that if something, except the mouse, is plugged into one port, another USB port becomes unusable? WTF???

What do I honestly lose if I buy a refurbished 15" MBP for $1500.

Is this a bad deal? Seems like a steal to me...love to hear people's opinions.

Good News And Bad News

The good news: Steve is still alive, but just barely.

The bad news: Apple, as pros used to know it, is dead.

Time to move on.

:apple:

nope

Which proprietary connectors would those be? None of the connectors are proprietary, they are what is called "new". It happens, you'll survive if you try. [Sorry, that's a bit snarky; but these forums seem to be filled with people whining about pretty small things.]

I agree that the limitation of FW ports to 1 may be a bit irritating. Get a NAS is all I can say. I've no specs off the head on Gigabit NAS, but I'm sure it can't be too far off FW800 in real-world performance.

Wrong. I had a 1TB LaCie NAS drive and it was slower than FW400 let alone 800. I originally had the same thought process as you. And what's worse, is that you have to mount the hard drive like any other network drive, and when you delete things they delete immediately and don't go into the trash bin. It takes longer to connect, mount, transfer, and disconnect. The only + was that you could connect more than one computer to it at the same time, which I didnt need to do.

Apple completely lost it...

I've been reading MacRumors for years (though I registered only a few months ago). I must say that I have NEVER seen such a negative response from the Mac community to an update of Apple hardware (it's happening on other sites too).

And you know what? I AGREE!!!

To put a glossy screen on a Pro level laptop is a horrible move. This will backfire big time.

The new mini-shmini-bs video port is also a move that I cannot understand. What's wrong with DVI?!?!

But the cream of the crop (for me) is the new 24" GLOSSY ADC. WTF are these people thinking?! I would ask Mr. Schiller if I should MOVE this display on my desk if I had reflections on it! This is total BS.

Down with Apple!!!!

go for it as long as they last. i just bought one 20 min ago.:)

I will be watching to see who is the next 'king' of the pro world.
There is some potential out there if someone would just harness what is already available. ;)

As far as I'm concerned, pro will mean whoever can sell me a laptop with a non-absurd screen, and multiple FW connections. Oh yeah, and runs OS X.

Crap. I'm stuck. And I'm starting to be unhappy.

Why is being a pro who uses apple starting to feel like an abusive relationship? There was so much love... what happened?

2 things:

- 128gb SSD - who's got specs on speeds / bus type?

- I saw a report this afternoon stating the new 15" LED screens are only 16 bit color??? Any truth to that?

Erm, you do realise that FW uses a digital connection don't you? The bits either get there or they don't. It's not analogue.

Your FW audio equipment will encode/decode the audio into a stream of bits which will fly across the FW as a load of ones and zeros... As long as it meets the specification it doesn't matter how many adaptors, or indeed bits of wet string, are between the source and the destination.

Yes I realise it is a digital connection (sorry, I don't mean to be patronising), but cheap cables or connecters can lead to digital distortion.

This is a total joke! Steve has totally lost his mind! Has the cancer returned, but this time in his brain? How could they drop FW 400 on the MBP, and FW altogether on the MB? It makes no since! WTF is with the glossy screen? It's a Pro Machine! And my God, why did they have to put that bezel on the MB and MBP? It looks good on the iMac, but on the MB's it looks like crap.

Seriously Apple, get your act together!

Don

Wicked expensive... Was hoping they'd get on the "EEE PC" bandwagon and have a small very inexpensive laptop... guess not.

Apple!?!?!?!?!!? Inexpensive!?!?!?! In THIS economy!?!?!?!

How about.................. NO!!!!

:apple:

I really, really like the new trackpad. clickable anywhere? you just move your finger to get the cursor where you want, then just press. brilliant. no tapping or using the thumb to click the trackpad button. by far my favorite new feature

I also like the magnetic latch finally making it to the MBP, and the battery indicator on the side is sort of nice.

I also like the new softer curves of the MBP and overall shape, but am NOT liking the black. the black/silver looks ok on the iMac but on the MBP... i dont know. firewire 400? I know 800 is compatible, but it'd be nice to just have a 400 port for external hard drives and other peripherals that have 800 as a more expensive option

macbook is a great deal now, I think. almost all MBP features are there...including a mandatory glossy screen;)

of course, none of this is enough to make me by one. I'll be using my now-ancient core duo MBP til it dies...

Seconded. Matte + FW petition, sign me up.

Maybe they'll change their prices when their revenues take a steep decline from all the pro users who suddenly abandon the new MacBook Pro :). Then they'll update themselves for the new economy.

Can anyone in the UK using the university network do me a favour?

Could you please check the price of the base model of MBP (after HE discount) for me? (2.4 GHz)

Thanks!

I love how you guys in America and the UK think that the prices are expensive. Try being over in Australia! I'm still happy anyway :D

how you people would have survived on CRT monitors

Have you ever seen a CRT monitor? Mine has practically zero reflectivity and glare. You need to shine a bare bulb directly in front of it to see anything other than 100% pure display.
