And a better price as well. And an option for a larger display. You can find far better pc laptops in terms of hardware with $700 only, with great design.

Macusers need better prices and flexibility. I dont understand why a 15" or 17" laptop should be a privilege of a "pro" or a rich user. Pro can be anyone, not the digital video pro.

Enough is enough with Apple. I think they are not addressed to serious users anymore but to barbie girls.

And where exactly do you suggest we go if we move on?

This would have to be the most horrible keynote I've ever seen. These guys are so enthusiastic they surely fell asleep just afterwards. Steve is either heavily medicated or just not a big fan of the new products he had to introduce.

I'm happy with my 17" MBP which I bought 4 months ago. There surely is no reason to sell. The only great thing I can find is the glass track.

Once again, I'm in agreement. I honestly can never go back to windoze. I have 3 options:

1) Stop using computers
2) Get a Refurb or used MBP
3) Get a "redesigned" MBP

I honestly can't believe that Apple crippled the MBP like this. This is total BS!

i am wondering if the glass bezel on the new notebooks can be easily removed like the one on the iMac? and if so, the plausibility of aftermarket glass bezel with different color borders and extra anti-glare coating could be available. l don't see why not? i would chose a border that best matches the aluminum (my biggest qualm of the new design being that black border) and the glass be a transistion glass so the glass will turn darker in the sun and blocks out the glare.

You don't get it. The whole point is to sell tons of crap that looks shiny and cool when you buy it, but drives you so crazy you can't wait to replace it once the "new" matte screens come out.

It takes planned obsolescence to the next level; planned uselessness.

:apple:

Perhaps I'm alone here but I was really hoping for a blu ray drive.

Possibly to just give me some excuse to buy one because I can't see much else that's 'new' about it. The specs are more or less the same and only apple could remove a button and call it a feature.

LOL - post/visualization firm here, often done at lot higher rez than BD and we never even thought to invest into Macs, never ever, not even for a second. Mac never been a serious contender for high-end video work, middle or rather low-end (editing, motion graphics etc.)

How the hell are you defining 'high-end'? I've worked in a number of post environments that were producing HD television content, and Macs/Final Cut have been pretty much de-facto. I don't know about film studios, but for TV work, they're ubiquitous. And don't try to tell me that the TV production industry is smaller than film... I've already laughed too many sad sad laughs today...

no. i don't get it. please, explain.

How exactly would you make glass matte? Isn't smooth and fully transparent glass always glossy?

Glass isn't just Silicon. It's a combination of elastic, lightweight polymer plastics fused with silicon. You can make the glass as bumpy or as fine as you so choose.

They could have easily made an extremely fine matte glass surface that doesn't have any light diffusion issues.

It's cheaper to mold without it.

Yes, in one year macbooks will be the only notebooks without blueray

How, pray tell, can they have a matte screen without putting plastic in the MacBook/MacBookPro line?

I think a few reflections from the glass are worth saving our planet.

Go Apple! Go Green!

I'm sorry, but for $1999 the earth can deal w/ some plastic. It's time to kick Gore off of the board. It's his fault that we're stuck w/ glossy screens!

Can't recall time when I was more disappointed with new Apple product releases. Even with impending laptops, I bought a black MacBook last month with plan that I'd sell it (my 1ghz Tibook wasn't cutting it anymore) when the new laptops came out. Now, I'm not so sure. I'll have to see 'em up close before making final decision. I'm stunned that there's no Firewire on the new MacBook. I thought they compensate us by adding an USB port but they didn't even do that. It also appears backlit keyboard is not even available on low end MacBook. To get that it will cost close to $2000 grand here in Canada. I can live with the cosmetics (love black keyboard but hate iMac like black display border) but fact that they have dropped matte display has got me miffed. I'm sure they will sell well but somehow I feel Apple has alienated many of their customers today.

Go Apple! Go Green!

And glass cracks SO much easier than plastic, ESPECIALLY in a jostled-around portable product, don't you know, and INSTANTLY renders your display (and most probably, the entire computer) useless.

Go Apple! Go Green $$$$$$$.

Indeed.

im baffled - this update has left apple with a ridiculously mismatched line up

new macbooks - but still an old white one

new macbook pro's - but a 15" less useful to pros (glossy only, no fw 400)

but still an old 17"

for the pros i guess - except its specs are worse than the 15", and its more expensive

then an LCD display - for who exactly ?

doesnt work with anything else apart from a brand new 13" macbook or 15" macbook pro

wtf, i am truly baffled

Well I'm safe for another six months or so. I thought for sure that I was going to want to upgrade, but after seeing the new MBP's, I think I'll be OK for a while.

I use my Macbook Pro primarily for generic home use and a bit of coding and development. Hence the lack of FW does not really bother me, however, the lack of matte really does. I specifically bought my two-generations-ago Macbook Pro because it had a matte screen when others didn't. For those who say that non-matte is fine, try using your laptop in a plane or car with the sun shining in - it's annoying as heck.

Plus, I was also observing the specifications and was wondering what I would get for my money if I upgraded from my Merom Macbook Pro:

1) 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo versus my 2.2 GHz C2D. Now, granted, I'm sure there have been architectural improvements, but the actual speed difference is not that exciting. Most definitely it doesn't sound like a $2,000 worthy upgrade.

2) 256 MB 9600M GT versus 256 MB 8600M GT. Well, according to this review, http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4610, the laptop with the 9600M GT scored 4,127 3DMarks while the 8600M GT scored 3,775 3DMarks on 3DMark06 - or a 9% increase. Still not sounding $2,000 worthy yet.

3) 250 GB vs. 120 GB hard drive. OK, this would be nice, but I could also upgrade the HD on my own, at a far less cost. Once again, the full cost of the MBP does not justify the doubling of hard drive size.

4) Matte screen vs. glossy. Well, I chose my MBP for the matte screen, so I don't think I'll change my mind and want to go back to glossy.

5) Longer battery life. Once again, this is nice, but how many of us really *need* five hours of battery life. If I was this desperate for the time, I would buy a second battery.

The problem is that recently Apple seems to only care about attracting new customers rather than significantly improving upon their products to make older customers like me want to upgrade. These are little more than style upgrades in effect. As I just showed above, my two-generation-old MBP can hold its own against the new top-of-the-line MBP. I have very little desire now to upgrade.

But they're shiny... And the hordes in the malls will love them for this Christmas season.

Can anyone explain how much of an overall performance increase the faster ram/fs bus isgoing to make in rough % terms?

I'm not too fussed about matte/do blacks look alot better on glossy or is that a myth?

I'm annoyed at the lack of FW ports.

I would have gone for a macbook pro had they been awesome. The disapointment has made me want to get a MB but I can't because it has no firewire. Hmmmmmmmmmm Stay Pc??

Is firewire technology dead then?

Yup. Or you can coat it. There are anti-reflective coatings they could have employed.

Well I just pulled the trigger on a new MacBook Pro...

I got the MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 15" 2.5Ghz 2GB 250GB SuperDrive Matte Screen for $1649 (w/ $150 rebate) and a free copy of VMware (w/ rebates).

I'm sorry, but the glossy only screen, 1 FW port, and all ports being on the left side just made step back and go in a different direction.

I'm happy. I got a great price, and the screen I NEED.:D
