Bad name, but it looks great! And, on the OS not having iOS 7-style GUI... YES!!!!!! I was afraid for a moment. If it looked like iOS 6, I'd be fine, but iOS 7 is yuck.

The Maps app and iCloud keychain sync will be really cool. Also, I'm glad and surprised that the helped us dual-monitor users out. I noticed that it's a little annoying to use a second monitor with Spaces. This really brightened my day because I saw iOS 7 and threw up a little. The new features on it are good, but the design stinks.

The big question: Will Mail still suck?

What's wrong with Mail?

PLEASE support the 2008 Mac Pro. This looks nice.

Apple probably ran out of names of what to call cat of one last name for OS X.

Next update probably be Mac OS 11 and probably be names of moons , planets , sea creatures or gods or some other naming thing .

Mac OS X cats .
Mac OS 11 moons
Mac OS 12 sea creatures

What benefits will this provide? Will this mean Macs finally are equal to Windows in gaming performance?

They have been in my experience except when the games are made for Windows and have some cheap port to Mac, especially a cider port, in which case it's a little slower. Mac OS doesn't have a native DirectX. Some games use DirectX, which I want to die in a hole because it's the most annoying software in the world even if you're using a Windows machine. If everyone would just use OpenGL instead of proprietary Microsoft software, it would be great.

So, you want Apple to release an untested OS full of bugs, so you don't have to wait 5 months to use iBooks?

What if the iBooks was so buggy to use, it'd take Apple 5 months of software updates to fix it, would you be okay with this?

Think of it this way, Apple is releasing Mavricks 5 months early to let developers test it throughly for 5 months.

Nope! I was expecting it to be ready by now. I don't want buggy software or Dev release on my production MBP.
If it was a month or two away, OK I guess. But about 4 to 5 months away, I think they announced it way too soon.

Monkeys would have guaranteed a longer lasting naming list, but Ubuntu already took monkey names...
oh, wait... how about dogs?
OS X 11 Chihuahua
OS X 11.1 Chitzu
OS X 11.2 Doberman

I can't think of a potentially larger list than that! :D

No, it isn't. Cloud syncing is optional, just like everything else. You don't want it, turn it off.

If Apple forced this on you, then it is not good but they're not. Many folks want this, so they can turn it on.

From the article:
"Keychain moves to iCloud in Mavericks to enable cross-device synchronization of passwords for use within Safari and other apps. Keychain will be able to suggest strong passwords and will remember credit card information to make online shopping easier."
It says right there that Keychain is moving to the Cloud. Meaning to me it is no longer on your computer.
Scary.

You're misunderstanding the article, they're just describing the new features in Mavricks, not a list of mandated features. They're not going to say "optional" in each feature description.

I can assure you, it's optional. There's a screenshot somewhere where in the iCloud account settings, Keychain is an option there. It was off by default.

If you don't want Apple to release a buggy OS, then they have to announce it 5-6 months in advance to give it a chance to be tested properly. Apple does not release internal betas without announcing the OS first because of the potential leaks.

It's a major OS release with a lot of under the hood changes, and you want Apple to only reserve 2 months for testing? That's a major indiction it'll be buggy. Even 5 month is not enough to beta test an OS release properly.

Thank you for this clarification, MikhailT.
If what you say is true, I may have to rethink upgrading to Mavericks when it comes out.
As long as Cloud syncing of Keychain is optional and Keychain is actually left on my computer.
Thanks again!

Some things under the hood look good.....but some things show how badly Apple continues to lose it's way.

Multi-monitor support? Really? Wow. And hey, the abomination they created in putting stitching on the calendar app is now gone! I wouldn't be surprised if they market that as being a new 'feature'.

The keynote was loaded with great vaporware.

When you use terms incorrectly, it invalidates them. Use the proper term so 'vaporware' will still mean something next year.

Yes the name Sea Lion sound really nice but there is no animal in real world called Sea Lion.

There is animal in the real world called Mavericks

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maverick_(animal)

What? Is this some sort of joke? Surely if you can find a slang word for a cow in wiki, you could also look up the several actual species of sea lions.

LOL. I already spend a lot of time with my wife, probably way too much time.
And most of the time, I'm outside.
So, what's wrong with complaining about having to wait 5 months?

I need iBooks on my Mac, something that doesn't really requires a whole new OS to work.
The keynote was loaded with great vaporware. We have to wait 5 months for it to condensate and freeze to become solid.

Vaporware is something that was promised and then never released or even cancelled. It's just vapor. Want to rewrite your post now?

You forget this was a DEVELOPER conference. they hand over the new OS to developers and then they test their apps with the new OS and only get 5 months to make them work.

What you are asking for is for Apple to give the OS to all of us today. Then 3/4 of your apps stop working and NONE of the 3rd party drivers work and you complain about that.

Apple has zero choose. They pretty much are forced to offer it to developers, give them some time, then make it public. It would not work if that changed that order around

Excellent

It's nice to see Apple going back to adding genuinely useful new features and improvements to OS X instead of slapping iOS features into it at the expense of usability and functionality.

Yeah fine, I would have NO problem if they code named OS11 Mavericks, but changing your naming scheme mid, hell mid nearing end, product life? wtf?

Why do you think there will be an OS 11 anytime soon? OSX will be used for quite awhile still, it's become too important of a brand for Apple to get rid of unless they do a complete overhaul which isn't likely for a long time. They can easily do 10.10, 10.11 and so on its not like they have to go to 11 after 10.9

as i posted before:

Developer Preview System Requirements:

The OS X v10.9 Developer Preview supports the following Macs:
- iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
- MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
- MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
- Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
- Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
- Xserve (Early 2009)

That means my wife's MBP is supported. Surprised, as I would have expected Core2Duo support to be dropped in 10.9.

BTW, did anyone else notice TC's mistake in the presentation when he said "Mountain Lion" instead of "Mavericks" (when he was talking about Safari IIRC). Also, Phil Schiller(?) said that the new Mac Pro has 6 Firewire2 ports

When explaining the name, TC said that yes, they had run out of cat names and that they looked for a series of names that would take them the next 10 years so it's going to be Californian places for a while longer yet :)

Naming of cities , places or landmarks is dumbest names thing ever.

You want some thing catchy pick naming of gods , mythical creatures , sea creatures , Folklore , moon or planets.

I hate the wave wallpaper, it is so ugly. I wish they picked the iOS starry night. It looks almost like the DreamWorks trademark image.

For another glorified service pack? I'd almost hate to pay that much.

I really, really want to know what people who make these claims expected to see from Snow Leopard > Lion > Mountain Lion > Mavericks > 10.9++.

I'm among the first to get excited about new filesystems, storage pools, filesystem tagging (YAY!!) but I'm baffled what you think constitutes a 'real' upgrade. Especially as we've had a price drop from 130 down to 30 dollars over those version increases.
