Really stupid name...If they were going to go for CA cities, why not just make it a real city?
While I respect the fact that you don't like the name, there seems to be a huge contingent of people on this forum that are emotionally involved with how Apple names it's products.

Take the iPhone for example... there's thread after thread arguing over how it should be named. Whether or not Apple should drop the "S" naming convention they've used for some time now, etc.

At the end of the day while I have an opinion on the name, it's meaningless since I care more about _using_ the product as opposed to getting attached to it's name.

can you please explain it to me one more time?

I'm confused by the "named after places in California" thing.

Is Mavericks still classed as OS X 10.9? If so how can there be later releases using the same theme? The next one is surely OS XI? Or will it be OS X 10.10 Compton?

Yeah, it seems, the Developer page says that, and also some Apple pages have a footnote talking about it being 10.9.

I can't really tell from the photos, but I sure hope the Dock will still display when an app is running. It seems that every OS that comes out, the little indicator light (directly below the app in the dock) gets smaller and smaller and harder to see. It's like were not supposed to care that we have an app open or not. I really hope this Mavericks (dumb name BTW) doesn't feel even more like IOS on the Mac. I have a feeling it does though.

It will be interesting to see if the new tabbed finder in Maverick will have the "Dual Window" feature of Xtra Finder. If it doesn't I think I'll stick with Xtra Finder for the tabbed browsing, dual window features.

If Maverick's has the above features of Xtra Finder, I just hope it won't be the beginning of the end for Xtra Finder.

I really don't like the name.

However, the improvements sound interesting, particularly all the many energy/performance improving features, I just hope that hiding an app won't mean that a complex render or build slows to a crawl, but slowing down other tabs in Safari is long overdue. Making plugin content static if not in focus is interesting as well, I just hope it works for pop-unders and for HTML video as well, as more and more ads are using these and it's not clear that the feature would work for those.

I'm a bit disappointed by the Finder updates though; tabs are long overdue, and tags seem useful, but I was hoping for a more drastic overhaul rather than yet more minor features being tacked onto a venerable, but not desperately efficient, core.

The additions to Notification centre ought to be great though, being able to take action from a notification could be very powerful if apps implement it wisely.

seed note says:

Just curious -- Is anyone disappointed that it doesn't seem like there will be a new interface design in OSX? Don't get me wrong -- and I'm sure the cynics will eat this up -- but does anyone feel that the color scheme and minor parts of the layout of the OS are gettting slightly stale, much like the previous versions of iOS? Something radical would be nice, considering how the desktop seems to be the little brother, as mobile continues to evolve at an incredible rate.

It would be nice to see the same focus put on the desktop.

No, the OS X already looks great and the UI changes can wait. OS X actually see subtle changes over the years, which iOS doesn't, thus the need for bigger change there.

I want Apple to focus on making the OS much faster, more efficient and so on. I don't care about the OS X design at the moment. The *Advanced Technologies* changes they made are exactly what I wanted I wanted to see.

But can we force using Timer Coalescing and App Nap also when macs are powered with magsafe??
Or we can use them only when it's on battery?
I think it could be useful also in order to get our macs cooler when using them connected to power chord for low cpu activities! :)
For example, I use my 15" retina all the day connected to power chord and to external display and i think there features would help my the mac to be cooler limiting background processes and idle cycles.
Bye :)

Andrea

It works all the time, regardless of the battery state. Remember reduced CPU work also means the OS X itself is more responsive, so it's not about battery alone.

What benefits will this provide? Will this mean Macs finally are equal to Windows in gaming performance?

No, it doesn't mean anything in terms of gaming performance. It means that the OS X support OpenGL 4 standard, the drivers and games still have to be explicitly coded to support the standard.

Certain features will be easier to add and will be more efficient/quicker to compete thanks to OpenGL but it depends on OS drivers for this.

As long as the drivers/games aren't optimized as often as they do on Windows, OS X can still suck with gaming performance even if it supports all the same standards as Windows.

Big let down for me. Was hoping for a UI overhaul like IOS 7.

Oh and TotalFinder looks better than this integrated version...

Mavericks?

You've got to be effin' kidding' me!
For all those 6+ billion people outside CA, who don't surf, that's like Homoeriodictyol.

Give me a break :apple:

Really looking forward to the battery life improvements, finder tabs, calendar, airplay to hdtv as a primary monitor, speed enhancements, tags, safari enhancements, OpenGL 4, and more. Really excited about it.
