If the team which lives in California decided to call the OS by the nice places around where they live, the places which inspire them, that is super fine by me. Why the hell not?.. I mean.. I can buy that.

Just don't, ever, let them go to the same places where the group from iOS7 went...

Yeah fine, I would have NO problem if they code named OS11 Mavericks, but changing your naming scheme mid, hell mid nearing end, product life? wtf?

OSX is not near the end of it's product life.

OSX has become the software name. ie. Windows, Linux and OSX.

As usual, I'll wait until iteration .6. Should be about right by then.

If your a pro user absolutely.

All looks lovely, but: "Mavericks"? I was expecting fish next. Or dinosaur names! How cool would that be: OSX Paracephalosaurus...

Maybe part of the deal for building their new UFO HQ is to promote California tourism?

Good, my MacBook 2010 will still get it. I see no reason to buy a new Mac in the future until this one quits working. It still fits my needs in every way. In fact, I typed this on a 2008 black MB.

OH THANK THE GODS. Mine will still run.

I like what I see so far. I really like the full dual display idea using airplay. Now what are the hardware requirements for 10.9?

EDIT: Did not see the answer posted above me. Looks like all my current hardware will be able to run 10.9. Of course the hardware requirements could change before the official release.

No, the OS X already looks great and the UI changes can wait. OS X actually see subtle changes over the years, which iOS doesn't, thus the need for bigger change there.

I want Apple to focus on making the OS much faster, more efficient and so on. I don't care about the OS X design at the moment. The *Advanced Technologies* changes they made are exactly what I wanted I wanted to see.

It works all the time, regardless of the battery state. Remember reduced CPU work also means the OS X itself is more responsive, so it's not about battery alone.

No, it doesn't mean anything in terms of gaming performance. It means that the OS X support OpenGL 4 standard, the drivers and games still have to be explicitly coded to support the standard.

Certain features will be easier to add and will be more efficient/quicker to compete thanks to OpenGL but it depends on OS drivers for this.

As long as the drivers/games aren't optimized as often as they do on Windows, OS X can still suck with gaming performance even if it supports all the same standards as Windows.

Mchale -- You have the "I" down pat. Unfortunately, the majority of what drives Apple's growth are not the "power" users, like yourself. Take the iPhone for instance. What features, besides the "it"/"cool" feature drives sales (hint: teenagers and "it" people) I worked for Apple for two years, in a capacity that I won't disclose. There is, indeed, a need for a "wow" factor, much like the iPhone. Regardless of what you think, a mix of the occasional user, and a user like yourself, is a healthy mix to acheive both objectives. OSX is extremely impressive, and the continued polishing will hopefully continue that, but it will not drive new consumers if they can't walk into an Apple Store and say "WOW!". It's not like the average consumer is like:

Think about it.

And what happens to existing open meta tagging? How is Apple implementing this?

BTW wasn't Maverick the name of an Ubuntu release? Or Mighty Maverick or something?

I do think about it. You said it yourself, now focus on the OS X's market itself, not the iOS market. OS X does not drive majority of the Apple's growth. OS X is still mostly used by power users and/or hardcore users, so yes, those are the features a lot of OS X users want.

My entire family and friends all have iPhones, iPads and so on but other than myself, none of them uses OS X. They just don't care and wants something that works and is cheap. They are never going to buy Apple laptops until it is within 300-500$ price point and works with anything they have. They won't care if it is pretty.

Ah I thought he meant a system wide copy/paste replacement that works on text and other highlightable media. I mustve mis-understood.

Ah, or maybe I misunderstood. Good question, I wonder if XtraFinder supports it, I don't use cut/copy/past much outside of using it for files/folders.

This is gonna be an exciting release. Feels like they actually got it all together properly this time. So many features that I always thought should be there all along...
Can't wait to get my hands on a new Macbook with Mavericks in the fall.

Well, shoot, I just bought 1Password because it was on sale. (I wonder if they knew or suspected?)

I did get the Mac/Win bundle, which this won't do, but I don't really use Windows that much. And I suppose this is limited to Safari, but I'm 50/50 Safari vs. Chrome anyway... now it'll be more in Safari's favor.

This is a good lesson to myself to always diligently procrastinate.

Help me out here. Isn't the downside of this auto-password fill-in the fact that if someone accesses your phone or laptop, they can log into every site automatically?

Technically yes, but people that will use Keychain Sync (like me) are the ones who have the autofill data stored in their Keychain. Keychain Sync allows users to sync the autofill data already stored on their devices.

Assuming you have a passcode lock, then it should be fine. Find My iPhone will probably erase it if a phone is declared 'lost'.

Nice incremental (and long overdue) improvements. OS X is still using the creaky old HFS+ file system though.

So now they're going to give the OS releases place names from California? Hmm, they seem to be taking a page out of Intel with their place names for their chipsets.

What is wrong with the file system they are using?

What is HFS+ ?

For me, it's bad. I have no iDevices, so syncing is not necessary. With Keychain on my computer I can be assured it won't be compromised. In the Cloud, who knows?
Call me paranoid. :)

iCloud is secure! It uses industrial-standard state of the art cutting edge XXXX bits of encryption, your data and password won't be compromised to anyone (except the big brother) ;)
