No, because my workflow is set that once I have the files, I don't need much more. Have you ever done software development? Are you saying .cs files in Visual Studio will take up GB of storage? The most our codebase has increased - and it is enterprise grade millions of lines of code and dozens of projects, hundreds of classes per projects and this is a VERY low estimate. The most it has increased is 1GB. Going from 10GB to 11GB in space. WOW hold on I need to get 1TB OMG!!!!

I have never had to delete any of the files. I downloaded the repo - took 10GB of storage with all the source files. Only increased to 11GB in 3 years. *.cs files are not that large of space.

And regarding your other comment that people typically don't have a dedicated gaming computer. You do realize that most businesses will fire their employees if you install games on the computer right? So I CANNOT play on my work computer even if I wanted to.
Not talking about people with work computers. We are discussing those who will purchase these Macs.

The majority of those customers will purchase them for multiple uses and will use larger files than yourself. I downloaded Zack Snyders Justice League and its a 31GB file. I Download 2 more 4K moves and that’s another 11-30GB.

You only using it for coding are in the minority. Also if that was your only computer you’d run out of space. You must work for a rubbish company because I know plenty of people who install their own software etc on work machines.

I believe most major corporations would not allow employees to install any software other than those approved by corporate IT, and those software are pushed down to the work machines. The company I worked for don't even allow the use of external storage devices, due to the fear of data leak.

New iMac disappointing at best. Bezels and a chin wow that’s so old school Even the LG monitor Apple used to sell had better aesthetics. Very disappointed as we waited so long for a redesigned iMac

Thoughts.

This isn’t the professional iMac. Probably (most) people who hang around on forums like this shouldn’t get one.

Upgrades. Apple no doubt has data to show that the entry level iMacs are rarely upgraded. I don’t see this is as a problem. Maybe things will be different with the 27” replacement.

The marketing presentation very much focussed on this iMac being used in (I’d assume) media / marketing / PR companies as they made great show of why the back is so important ie it’s on display in open plan and receptions etc. Home offices too (from the marketing videos).

Also: they went on about continuity - which is old news - making me think that they’re aiming for long time iMac users who haven’t upgraded in 5+ years.

Bezels. Come on, they’re pretty thin. I can just see the comment threads when/if Apple ever release a bezel-less iMac about how if ever you move it you get finger prints on the screen edge 🙄.

Chin. I think only the most anally retentive person will notice this in daily use. The sort of person who fixates on their hands typing when using a laptop keyboard.

Price. Wow it’s expensive.

Because i) it's likely to be FUNCTIONAL and ii) from a product design perspective it actually make it look BETTER! Maybe a controversial opinion to those hardcore geeks that get angry in here, but most of the public and certainly I think most designers would say it looks better and gives it form. If it was just a floating screen then it would just look like a boring monitor, in the same way more phone these days all look the same. This has a commanding presence on a desk when switched on or off, I'm surprised people in these forums can't see that.

As for height adjustment... move your head, it has more adjustment than any monitor would do. I have a monitor at work that can be adjusted an infinite number of ways... I never once bother to adjust it!
You understand how height adjustment relates to ergonomics? an orthopedic physician may help you understand "move your head" is not going to cut it for most people... As for the chin: there's NO FUNCIONAL reason it can't be covered by display glass; design wise it would look way much better IMHO, just take a look at XDR Display "boring floating screen". A purposeless metal chin is just senseless and lame design.

Cooling, board, and speakers. Six speakers - the two bass pairs are as thick as the panel, so they place them under the panel. Also, speakers work best with lots of space around them. The surround sound effect needs what is basically a soundbar. I thought they might even offer a speaker bar, but less of the chin.

The choice to emphasize the sound, while keeping the system nearly silent. Moving the speakers up would at least double the thickness, maybe more, and change the audio characteristics. It managed Dolby Atmos certification.

I do remember the iMac lampshade we owned came with three speakers, two clear on the side and an optional subwoofer. I loved those little speakers. That could have been another path taken, but Apple (and other companies) want to sell all-in-one boxes.
Why can't it be covered by front glass? Sony has done it remarkably well.

This should have been called the iMac Air. Did anyone notice how there were no pro Applications shown in the presentation video or the website? Pages, Safari, Zoom, and GarageBand are not demanding. Where is the Adobe Suite? Final Cut? I don't like this overly friendly and accessible approach. Even the design is dumbed down. Something about it just does not sit right with me.
Interesting. So does this mean you can’t run Adobe stuff or Final Cut very well on the M1 MacBook Pros?

Surprised we haven’t heard more about that. Wonder why that is?

That iMac didn’t “come with” those speakers. They were third part speakers you bought separately.

I started out with "I like it".

But Face-ID would have been nice, we at least get touch-id. A redesigned Magic Mouse would've been great too. That port limitation on the less powerful one seems odd. 2 ports on a desktop? Guess I only kinda like it.

Now I‘m curious what they'll do with the bigger iMac.

The problem with Face ID might be that a lot of people would be too far from the camera. And to be fair, most people don’t tend to unlock their computers anywhere near as often as they unlock their phones.

Just because things like touch screens and Face ID were created to solve problems (admittedly first world problems) doesn’t mean that every device has the same problems.

Can someone tell me what the purpose is of having Ethernet through the power brick? Advantages/disadvantages ?

My guess is that Apple simply couldn’t fit the Ethernet port onto the back of the computer, given that it is so thin that even the audio jack had to be shifted to the side.

I am surprised Apple didn’t just tell their users to buy an Ethernet adaptor and call it a day.

This iMac, design wise, is not what I would have preferred. That said the deviation from what I would rather have seen is not great. My criticisms are really nitpicking, but then very very few things in life are perfect and exactly what we want.

- Black bezels, but I can live with white.
- I like the older pedestal shape better, but I can live with the new one. The pedestal should have been height adjustable, but my desk already has an elevated level for my current computer.
- Apple logo missing on the front seems like a real omission, but you can probably add your own to break up that swath of colour on the chin.

I think some of the vitriol expressed around here is a bit extreme, largely fuelled by unfulfilled expectations. This is a definite upgrade over the previous entry level iMacs (in Canada I am referring to the $1399 and $1699 Intel 21.5 iMacs). And coming in at $1599 CAN, $100 below the current $1699 model, does make this an appealing upgrade. The larger forthcoming new iMac remains to be seen in terms of specs, but I wouldn’t expect it to be different form from what was just introduced.

Looking at it more closely I can see the rational for their design choices which helps temper some of my nitpicking. I would likely go with silver, but I find myself liking that green. Hmm...

I loved my original G3 Indigo coloured iMac. I wasn’t crazy about the design of the eMac that replaced it, but I grew to really appreciate it. I did not really care for the sunflower iMacs or the white pizza boxes that followed. But I still like the look of my current mid 2011 21.5 in. as well as the present design being replaced.

The new iMac has a lot more that I like than what disappoints me.

Why's it got a massive ugly chin still?
Why are the bezels white and ugly?
Why are the colours bright on the back but pastel on the front?
Where are the 'normal' colours?
Why has it got so few TB3 ports?
Why is the memory so teeny AND not upgradeable?

I've been waiting for this for years and it's so disappointing. What's happened to Apple that they make something so ugly and for no reason? The tech is there to make a nice, clean product (like every render from every amateur fanboy) and yet they produced this thing.

Why's it thin? When was the last time you put an iMac in your pocket? Do you sit at your desk for 8 hours a day looking at the side of your Mac? Or the front?

Hopefully some of the issues can be solved with the bigger (pro?) model - proper ports, decent colours. But still, presumably we're stuck with the 2004-era chin for another 10 years because they couldn't be bothered to move the contents behind the screen.

Crazy. Sad times.

That’s why you get a 10 port USB hub if you need it. Or a five port USB hub if that’s enough. Or none if you don’t need it.

I hear this all the time, but there are several downfalls to this:

- a renowned German compute magazine (Ct) regular tests USB hubs, there still has not been a single one without one flaw or an other.
- I do not want to buy an expensive all in one computer with a neat design (Ok, open for discussion) to place some ugly USB hub beside it.
- most go the hub I have checked out (at least the thunderbolt ones) can not be powered by the host. This means one more power supply with cables and stand by losses. Especially as Apple always emphasizes how environmental friendly they are (just to mention, no power supply with the iPhone), they should reconsider this.

An external hub is a solution, but not a good one, at least for a one in all desktop computer

At least it's a safe iMac.

I don't mind the bezels or the chin for the reason you pointed out. You must be able to hold the iMac somewhere without levin fingerprints on the display when adjusting the tilt or inserting a plug.

But I do mind, that they are white which in my opinion is bad for ergonomics.

Initially I thought WTF, now, about 24H later they're growing on me, although I'd prefer a Space Grey option... Also miss the Apple logo or name on the chin, which looks a bit 'lost' now. Having said that we need some more good photo's in other light conditions that show the glass front better, I think they will look better in real life than the current set of images... all looks a bit artificial/rendered.... Spec wise, the M1 is good enough for now, but would have liked more RAM and Storage at these prices.. Particularly storage is my biggest issue.... 256 really doesn't cut it. 1TB would be a good size.

As someone who's actually worked for years on a white iMac with white bezels - I actually preferred those. Because they blend into the wall/surroundings, the black ones always remained a noticeable border. I don't look at enough mostly-black content for the content to disappear into the bezel like you describe.

And, the BLACK bezel but WHITE accessories have really really bugged me ever since they made that change. (so yes, naturally, I switched to black/space grey keyboard and mouse/touchpad as soon as they offered those)

You might wanna take another look at those older iMacs. You might notice they all had white bezels... all the up until 2007. There's your COMPLETE throwback.

Well said - this new design surely is a throwback to the older designs. I kind of like them, although they will stick out when you work with multiple monitors if just for the bezel.
I’d have loved to see a smaller bezel and chin though rather than work them out as such obvious design features.
