Absolutely d'accord. The colors are refreshing, but an all-white option would have been just as nice as a space-gray/black (that's probably coming for a larger 'Pro'-type iMac later) one. I loved the look of the space-gray iMac Pro (I generally like black and it made that black bezel more harmonious and introduced black keyboard/mouse/trackpad, making everything just more consistent), but I kind of really have been missing the white signature look in Apple products for years.

I really don't get what everyone's raving about the black bezels. Really don't.
I still don't understand why they ditched the G4 design.

If they were going to go retro in design they should have copied the iMac G4 with the adjustable arm. Its the most ergonomic iMac to date.

Going back for any reason looks bad on the marketing slides, as if the perfect forum had been achieved already. A terrible message to send hence not going to happen I guess.

Perhaps this iMac isn't the right fit for a professional sound studio anyway.

This is the base-model, after all.

Maybe wait for the 27" replacement.

Besides... if you're running a business... the cost of the equipment is the least of your worries. You have rent/mortgage, staff salaries, insurance, etc.

Humans cost more than the equipment ever will!

:p

To those complaining. You realize that we are going to get a new iMac that is bigger more ports more powerful and more professional. This is good for most people. Lol. Not every machine is made for macrumors fanatics.
Why does a more powerful machine require a bigger screen? They should quit making all-in-one iMacs and go back to upgradable computers with separate displays. Especially now that USB-c can deliver power and 5K video to the display with one thin cable, why does anyone want an all-in-one anymore?

they should do a ticker iMac with all tech pack behind the screen, like iPad.
that chin is hideous.

They spent it on better quality mics and interface. In a few months, they will max out the RAM for more tracks and instruments.
That'd be a remarkably precise mistake to make. Worst case, they buy new Macs with the new money and sell the old. Is this a real scenario you've seen or encountered?

It's hypothetical anyway given that M1 Macs don't support enough RAM for these professionals to use. The Intel iMac goes up to 128. I'd probably want user-swappable RAM if there were a $1000 difference between base and loaded, but such large amounts of RAM would probably physically require separate memory modules that would be user-upgradable.

Think about students, office people or families. They just want a device that works out of the box. We are macrumors people. But they don’t represent the average person. Not every student is a techie nor is every business person, legal profession, accountant, etc. Now sure while it may not be hard and I may be over stereotyping all in one is pretty easy to set up. Plug and play.
Plus having upgradable components defeats the whole energy efficiency and integration that apples silicon team brings. The Mac Pro is the one exception. Sure while there is the argument of just leaving it open for PCI expansion cards (notwithstanding the Mac Pro) but limited to stuff like sound cards for instance, it creates headache people want a device that works. It’s easy and simple. From an environmental standpoint too, Apple devices have a pretty long lifespan if you take care of them get years of updates and have a great supply chain to boot. Sure while you have that display problem, they do a good job at offsetting their footprint - especially to be net 0 by 2030. All of the stuff can be recycled as well.

I fear we will never see user-swappable RAM on iMacs again. Just M series with integrated RAM.

Your point? The design harkens back to original iMac in all kinds of ways. If Porsche can milk a design and design cues for the past 57 years, Apple sure can use heritage cues in a new design for a 23 year old computer.
Well, your comparison to Porche (assuming 911 model) woud be quite embarising, but doesn’t really apply, as 911 design history is all about continuity, unlike iMac. Plus internals in 911 don’t get underpowered...

On the RAM situation:
It’s part of the SOC, it’s part of what makes the M1 fast, and it’s LPDDR, which doesn’t come on DIMMs anyway. Quit yer bellyaching.

On the storage situation:
The storage controller is on the SOC, the only hope anyone would have of removable and upgradable storage is proprietary units like on the Mac Pro. Be real, you’d all still complain.

The constant bitching over non repairable RAM and Storage is silly when the battery will likely die first. Having a glued battery is the egregious part. Not that the iMac has a battery.
Considering it has magsafe !?, maybe it should have😏

I would really love a Jony Ive-style design-video featuring the current Apple designers, arguing for the design-choices they made on this one.

I am fully behind MKBHDs reasoning and suggestions for a better design:

The many shades of the same color on each device are a mess to my eyes. And that white, rather thick white bezel. Yuk.

"An iPad on a stick"

Now that the higher-end iPad has the M1 processor, what is this thing? Just a 24" iPad on a stick with a keyboard included in the box.

I had hoped that by now Apple would have an M2 processor. So far all we have is the low-end M1 processor. The same M1 used on the Mac Air and iPad. Will Apple even have a higher-end processor?

Will the Mac Pro be moved to the M1?
I think in an alternate timeline, where there was no COVID-19 and no chip shortage, I really do think that Apple would've harnessed TSMC full power and released the iMac with an M1X SoC and the iPad Pro with the A15X CPU...Apple would never have put the M1 in all of their new products....but because they can't get TSMC to start manufacturing these new chips and maybe TSMC gave an impossible timeline to Apple of when they could start manufacturing these new chips (M1X and A15X), that Apple acquiesced and just told TSMC just to put the M1 in everything.

I really do think Apple didn't want to go down this route but was forced to do so.....Maybe TSMC told Apple, "we can't make these new chips until 2H22 and Apple looking at their roadmap, and having publicly stated as "completing the transition to Apple Silicon in 2 years in all of their Macs," Apple was left with no choice but to put the M1 in the iMac. Otherwise, they would risk failing to keep their promise and having the entire roadmap jeopardized due to the domino effect. They could've gone this route because there is just no competition with their M1 chips at the moment. They are just so superior to anything else on the market that Apple just decided to rest on their laurels. If the competition was more competitive in this space and the reviews weren't as glowing, I'm sure Apple would've found some way to release the M1X in the iMac and the A15X in the iPad Pro.

Not sure that's true, if Apple didn't want to publicly put the M1 in the iPad Pro they could easily have renamed the chip in the A series.

You've obviously never done color correction on a monitor with white bezels. Search for articles that describe the issues. It also leads to eye strain.
Never had any issue with color correction on my G5 iMac, nor any eye strain at all. Can you provide any pointers to places that describe in detail the issues you mention? I did a search and all I found is claims of bezels being "distracting"... but that's not objective (if it was objective, my eyes would be more comfortable with black bezels, and they are not).
