The constant bitching over non repairable RAM and Storage is silly when the battery will likely die first. Having a glued battery is the egregious part. Not that the iMac has a battery.

As an IT professional. IT manager. and 30+ years working directly with computer hardware.

This is nonsen se and there are very VERY Valid reasons for wanting and needing removable storage.

Simply put: I like what the hardware has. But I will never EVER buy a laptop or bigger device with soldered storage, especially on the re-sale market. Its a horrible decision with planned obsolescence in mind.

There's a valid time and place where soldered storage makes sense. Your phone for example. Where size is absolutely a premium.

But a desktop computer doesn't and SSHOULD NEVER Make that compromise. doing so is intentionally limiting the lifespan, resale value and future upgrade paths for no other reason but to pad financials on rebuys.

this is a cute computer. I think it's ugly, but that's irrelevant from a technical perspective and subjective. But what isn't subjective is years (decades) of computer knowledge and history evidencing the reason why removable storage is prefereable.

Anybody else thinks the front view of the new iMac looks like some kind of HP or Lenovo all-in-one? It's one 'fabric texture' on the chin away from being indistinguishable.

I know it'll be stellar quality. It's impressively thin. And it will scream in use with the M1. But I don't know if the colours would suit me... I like the deep rich colours on the back but the front washed out colours ... and the white bezel.. Meh. Looks good in the marketing. In anything but a sterile white setting though, idk how it would look :S

Why this obsession with getting rid of the chin? It serves a purpose

did you see the teardown / internals? There literally isn't a purpose. they put all the PC components in the chin and only half filled the rest of it.

make the device 20mm thick instead of 11mm thick and be smarter with design. Going the current route makes me beleive the choice was purely aesthetics and nothing to do with technology.

I'm willing to bet the 27" doesn't look like an iPad wiht a chin on a stand, but actually a real All in one computer with a far more reasonable internal layout.

This device honestly feels like it's aimed at children and someones "first pc" than a real attempt at a real future redesign.

Great point there for sure. What’s the appeal here?
the MagSafe socket seems deeper than the old style MagSafe so imagine it’s a stronger connection. But I don’t have a current iMac so I can’t tell you how easy it is to unplug the cord from it.

Or...rather than be unhappy for another 10 years, take a look at Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, etc and find happiness.
He just likes showing up every so often to right the same tired old comments and try to stir things up. He has not said anything new or of any actual value on this forum in the past 3 years that I’ve been actively posting.

Apple has announced a new, redesigned 24-inch iMac, featuring an M1 chip, a 4.5K display, and a range of color options, as well as an improved cooling system, front-facing camera, speaker system, microphones, power connector, and peripherals.

m1-imac-colors.jpg

The new iMac features a completely new compact design, and comes in a range of seven striking colors, including green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. Brighter colors feature a more muted front with an intensely saturated rear. The iMac's overall volume has been reduced by over 50 percent and is now just 11.5mm thin.

m1-imac-front.jpg

The iMac features a new 24-inch 4.5K display with slimmer bezels and 11.3 million pixels, in a design that is only slightly larger than the previous 21.5-inch model, and offers 500 nits of brightness, True Tone, P3 wide color, and an antireflective coating.

The 24-inch iMac is the first iMac to feature Apple's own custom silicon processor for the Mac, the M1 chip, after years of using Intel chips, allowing for a completely redesigned cooling system containing just two small fans.

m1-imac-orange.jpg

Compared to the previous Intel-based 21.5-inch iMac, the new iMac with the M1 chip features 85 percent faster CPU performance, up to 2x faster GPU performance for certain apps like Affinity Photo and Photoshop, and up to 50 percent faster performance than the most powerful discrete graphics in the fastest 21.5-inch iMac.

m1-imac-ports.jpg

The new iMac is able to take advantage of the image signal processor in the M1 chip and the Neural Engine to enhance the image quality of the 1080p camera with better noise reduction, greater dynamic range, and improved auto exposure and white balance.

The iMac contains a "studio quality" beamforming three-microphone array, as well as a more powerful six-speaker system that supports spatial audio with Dolby Atmos.

The iMac offers two Thunderbolt ports, and the 8-core configuration also adds two additional USB-C ports and a 1Gbps Ethernet port in the power adapter. The iMac also features a magnetic, two-meter long rear power connector, supports Wi-Fi 6, and external displays with up to 6K resolutions, such as the Pro Display XDR.

m1-imac-touch-id.jpg

The new iMac comes alongside new peripherals, including a color-matched Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad, as well as an all-new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID for the first time.

The 24-inch iMac with 7-core GPU starts at $1,299, featuring an 8-core CPU, 8GB of unified memory, a 256GB SSD, two Thunderbolt ports, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Mouse, while the 24-inch iMac with 8-core GPU starts at $1,499 features an 8-core CPU, 8GB of unified memory, a 256GB SSD, two Thunderbolt ports, two additional USB 3 ports, Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Mouse, and Ethernet.

The new iMac comes in green, pink, purple, blue, and silver, with the yellow and orange color options being exclusive to the 8-core model.

Orders begin on April 30, with devices arriving in the second half of May.

The chin is likely there due to the components. I don't think it's that bad and certainly wouldn't be a make/break issue for purchase. Coming from Windows, I am very much looking forward to diving into the ecosystem.

Students - which won't be able to install anything as schools typically lock down their devices
Teachers - employees of a school
Some businesses will have these and they will also be locked down
Parents - I don't think my mom or dad is wanting to play Cyberpunk 2077 thank you.

Gamers are NOT the target for these systems. NOT AT ALL. What gamers need are the RTX 30xxs. Do these even have an NVIDIA GPU?

You downloaded the Justice League movie? It's on HBO Max as streaming only, are you saying you got it illegally? I watched it, it didn't take up 30 GB on my device as its streaming.
Not all student get given their computer by schools. Have you ever heard of the Back to School promotion from Apple? So they are free to download whatever they wish.

Teacher again don’t generally get given laptops so again they will purchase their own and install whatever they like.

I’m a parent and I play games, I have both Xbox Series X and PS5 and I bootcamp my iMac to run Windows 10 games. You don’t need the latest Nvidia card to play games.

You have totally misunderstood my point. I have never said gaming was the primary use of the machines. It an example of one scenario where a Mac can be used and a 256GB hard drive would not be enough.

Not everyone enjoys streaming. I personally dislike it. I prefer actually owning things I pay money for. My iTunes music collection on its own is 180GB that’s your 256GB SSD finished. I keep the full library of music on every Mac I purchase.

I am in the UK and HBO Max does not exist here. We have Sky TV which allows you to download movies to watch offline later on without the need for an internet connection, for instance when you are travelling.

Trouble is it doesn't really matter if the base is 512GB then - whatever they set as base config has always got potential to be little more than a drop in the bucket versus the open ended (and never ending) storage requirements of multiple games and 4K videos

In that scenario biting the bullet on day one and springing for an external storage solution (in conjunction with least costly internal storage option) could well be the best way to go
This is true but having a larger internal drive initially allows you to store some things for longer before needing to move them on.

Another example would that I have a 180GB music collection which I like to keep at all times in my Mac. A 256GB would not be enough to hold it once apps and system files are accounted for.

It is absolutely mind-boggling that in 2021 a new computer comes with the same amount of storage as my current phone. . .
Both bad design (white bezels, etc) and extremely poor entry specs, truly show how greedy Apple has become.
It seems that they are in the business of selling RAM and SSD upgrades rather than computers.

Whomever decided to pair pink and red needs to turn in their designer credentials, like right now.

All of the pale colours look terrible paired with the full-saturation backs, but pink + red is especially bad. They’d look so much better monochromatic.

Bold move omitting the Apple logo from the chin.
Cost cutting by Tim Apple. You have no idea how much an Apple logo costs.

Well my wife has >7 years out of her totally non-serviceable rMBP and counting. Components don't fail the way they used to. Did your 2012 MBP have its HDD die and you put an SSD in?
Really? Do you have a reference for failure rates? What happened to cause components to fail less?

And this has a poor environmental impact. It is a well known fact that the longer a machine can be used, the better it’s environmental impact is. Lack of repariablity and ugradbality limits the lifespan of computers. A 4/5 year old upgradable and repairable machine has a far greater chance of being useful than a non upgradable/repairable machine.

Having to buy a new machine because one’s ram or storage requirements increase 3/4 years into ownership is wasteful of resources, when the same machine with an upgrade could have cointnued to be serviceable.
But Tim Apple has told you that these new iMacs are the most environmentally friendly iMacs that Apple has EVER made. You clearly do not know what you are talking about. ;)

What in the world are you doing that your RAM requirements suddenly increase? This is a nonsensical argument. Buy what you need from day one.

I deployed machines (windows and Mac) at ESPN for two years. You know how many times I upgraded RAM on any device? Zero.
So why does Tim Apple allow upgradable RAM in the Intel iMacs? You know the ones used for video editing.

They omitted the logo on the chin to make it less distracting while viewing full screen content. They’re advertising the new iMac as a TV replacement and a lot of TVs have/had a chin on them. This makes it easy for the iMac to fit into any decor in the room it goes into. The muted color of the chin is meant to be less distracting than the vibrant back colors while still being discernible as a color, not as an accent.
What TV has a chin? I have not seen an LCD or OLED TV with a chin.

"An iPad on a stick"

Now that the higher-end iPad has the M1 processor, what is this thing? Just a 24" iPad on a stick with a keyboard included in the box.

I had hoped that by now Apple would have an M2 processor. So far all we have is the low-end M1 processor. The same M1 used on the Mac Air and iPad. Will Apple even have a higher-end processor?

Will the Mac Pro be moved to the M1?
LOL. "iPad on a stick" could be a whole Apple marketing series. Brilliant!

No. It's a 24" downgraded chined iPad Pro on a stand.
If only it was chinned iPad Pro on a stand. iPad has a battery. iMac has no battery, so not only can't you use it on the patio, but if there is a power outage or the (magnetic?!?!) power cord is disconnected, it crashes. In 2021.

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Most-Reliable-PC-Hardware-of-2018-1322/ for what it's worth. Hard to get a good realistic idea of failure rates, but this was about personal anecdotes to begin with. At least I have 12 still-functioning 2012 rMBP corporate laptops to look at. I could leaf through my employer's datacenter machine repair records, but those are confidential, so actually I can't.

It’s actually targeted for the whole Apple ecosystem.
Yeah, but they don't care. Even their own promotional site about it only mentions "Mac" somewhere small near the bottom after a huge, laggy display of iPhones and iPads running games. The Mac gaming ecosystem is desolate, while the iPhone's is the most successful in the world in most ways.

I did find the omission of the logo odd. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm curious if the iMacs would look more interesting if the chin was the same colour as the back….
Considering the new design, the omission must be in respect to steve’s and jony’s work.

Love the chin, it's an iMac not some generic LCD monitor - what don't you people understand?
Wondering why the chinless XDR pro Display doesn’t seem generic minimalist LCD...
