Have you ever configured a BTO machine before? 1TB SSD’s can be bought elsewhere for cheap, but they are rarely (if ever) cheap from the OEM.

I just configured a standard Lenovo T15...it’s base is 128GB. Check the pics for the upgrade pricing 😂

Because most manufacturers have followed Apples lead by closing off the system to the user. Essentially forcing customers to upgrade at the point sale. This means they can charge over the odds.

Come on. That’s ********. I upgrade these models literally multiple times a week for work (before giving them to users). Do you even know what a thinkpad is?

The main issue (at least for me) is no video input. I'd love a nice new display, but I don't have a single-use display at the core of my setup. I suppose this isn't a prime concern for the target market, but I sure hope they address it with the more 'pro' bigger revision we'll be expecting.

How long does it take Apple to learn from past failures like the HomePod or port-deficient laptops? Just give people a bit more flexibility in use, especially with something as essential as a display. Having an input solves all kinds of issues. Someone might have a PC (especially since the M-series isn't compatible and/or they might want to game), or a gaming console, etc. they'd want to use the display for. How much would it cost to add? I'd think very little.

Same with the HomePod. I'd own a couple of them if it had aux-in. But, as a 'smart speaker' that can only stream from Apple, it just isn't that useful no matter how good it sounds.

Your parents are probably elderly and therefore make up a small percentile of Apple customers in that age group. Not the main target customer with their products. They won’t be using the computer for a lot of uses other than browsing.

1TB should be the minimum, it’s just Apple being cheap. They are not longer that expensive to include in systems. It should not raise the price.

You have just admitted not all customers would get by on 256GB those who download alot, game etc need larger drives.

Putting in a larger 1TB as standard caters for the vast majority of use cases. You can use only 256GB of that if you wish, which you seem to love. Those who do more with their computers will benefit as well.
Not everybody plays games you know. My brother, who is in his 30s, does not play games on his computer either. The general user uses XBox or Playstation for those things. NOT macs.

And you admitted that there ARE valid use cases for 256. So how about this? Get the space you need. OMG SHOCKING!!!! I NEED 8TB on my Windows PC. I only need 256 on my work laptop.

1. i'm disappointed about the colours!
2. Was hope they scratch the chin!
3. Where is the 27 inch iMac and hopefully with NO chin?
Apple you could do it better 😁😉

^^ The colours on the front are mostly the same as the iPad Air (except minus Rose Gold and Space Gray) plus a few new ones. I understand not liking the chin, but it does house the 6-speaker audio and is a signature design cue setting the iMac apart from other AIO desktops and flatscreen displays. The larger iMac (30-32 ins.) is forthcoming, most likely in September or October this year.

This new design is growing on me, but I still would have liked the Apple logo on the chin. I guess there might be a decal available.

I want to see some bench tests of the top configured iMac to see how it compares with a similarly configured current 27in. Intel iMac. That could decide whether I pop for this or wait for the larger iMac yet to be released. I presently have a 500GB SSD so 512 would still suit me. I presently have 32GB RAM and an older i7 so thats my baseline I’m starting from. Maybe I’m wrong, but the M1 with 16GB RAM and 512 to 1TB SSD should do distinctly better than what I have now. Certainly a 24in. display gives me about twenty oercent more screen than my 21.5.

For myself I don’t need an SD card slot or HDMI, but marketing wise I think it was ill advised to leave those off the redesign—a few more millimetres of thickness would have been worth it. Same with not having even one USB-A port. Forcing people to buy damned dongles is insulting to customers already shelling out this kind of money. Note they are bringing back additional ports to the MacBooks—did the designers of the iMac not get that memo?

The big misstep that I can see involves the white bezel on all models - it's a bit distracting the more you look at it. I expect the same bezel to be black on the bigger Pro models.

Absolutely d'accord. The colors are refreshing, but an all-white option would have been just as nice as a space-gray/black (that's probably coming for a larger 'Pro'-type iMac later) one. I loved the look of the space-gray iMac Pro (I generally like black and it made that black bezel more harmonious and introduced black keyboard/mouse/trackpad, making everything just more consistent), but I kind of really have been missing the white signature look in Apple products for years.

I really don't get what everyone's raving about the black bezels. Really don't.
I think the white bezels look bad when you stick a thick band of colored metal underneath. Without the chin the white would look pretty nice.

But now that I say this... those colors would look pretty terrible with a black bezel.

Ugh! 24"? Really? It's a conspiracy to exploit older Apple users' eyesight and wallets. I can survive with 27" ... prefer 32"+ but not 32"+ Apple ProDisplay pricing! ;p

Its an ugly looking laptop many businesses provide to their workers.

Upgrading a Lenovo SSD to 1TB is cheaper than Apple on their official website.

But there are people out there who use their Macs for gaming, what's your point? Just because YOU do not do something on your computer does that mean everyone else in the world doesn't?

You're taking the whole gaming thing way too seriously. I was merely saying if a £450 games console can put in a 1TB PCIe 4 SSD then Apple charging considerably more can stop trying to rip off customers and include one as well. A non gamer who is into movies would fill a 256GB easily.

How about you understand and acknowledge just because you think 256GB is enough the majority of people out there would always opt to have more built in as standard. Just because you say 256GB is enough doesn't mean you are right.

I'm pretty certain you don't need 8TB for your Windows PC and I know you're lying about 256GB being enough for your work laptop. You just can't admit to it.

Speakers, logic board and the other hardware probably wouldn't work very well as a package behind all that glass.

Works on iPad. Make it a few iPads thick, and there’s plenty space to hide the intervals without the chin.

The iPad is Apple and Oranges, though. :p I get that it could work if Apple had done this, that, and the other differently. I think from a cost point perspective, they made the best design decision given the overall consumer group this probably made for.

White is less contrasting with muted colours than black would be.
Exactly. And that actually is kind of a problem when color accuracy is important.

I guess it really comes down to what someone is doing.

Folks who watch a lot of videos or look at photos (or play games), both on a Mac and an iPad/Phone, understandably prefer black bezels.
I spend the majority of my time looking at text on white background (both on my Macs and my iPads) and as I mentioned in previous posts even after years still find the black bezels extremely distracting.

Bold accusations...

I have terrabytes of terrabytes of data. That I'm 99% processing on my desktop machines (both my iMac and Windows PCs at my office). I only have 2TB in my iMac, so obviously I don't have data *on* my iMac - preferably I would.

My (work) Macbook Pro only has 256 and it's plenty enough. Data I need to access on my Macbook live in a cloud.

Who are you arguing with? I have said MANY times I have an 8TB system and I NEED it. Where am I saying that there is NO use case to use more than 256GB of storage?

My point is, not everyone NEEDS 1TB, so why FORCE 1TB as MINIMUM for even the lowest product on Apple's store? You do realize that the iMac Pro - you know geared towards the HIGH END PRO actually STARTED with 1TB of storage? These systems are geared towards students, office workers, secretaries, general home users.

Gaming on a Mac is NOT good. I can build a MUCH better gaming PC for $500 than even my $4,500 iMac.

Again, games take up WAY more space than pretty much any other application in existence. So a PS5 and Xbox being at 1TB makes PERFECT sense being targeted as a "gaming device".

Uhhhh yes I do need that 8TB. Its obvious now that you are just a troll. That is always what happens is that it just becomes "you lying!!!!" so this will be my last on this part of the discussion as its not going anywhere. I never said 256GB is perfect for everything. So here we go, just to list a few.

Halo Master Chief Collection - 144 GB
Borderlands 3 - 138 GB
GTA5 - 98 GB
DOOM (2016) - 68 GB
DOOM Eternal - 68 GB
Horizon Zero Dawn - 68 GB
Final Fantasy XIII - 57 GB
Middle-earth: Shadow of War - 109 GB
Company of Heroes 2 - 40GB
Dragon Quest 11 - 30 GB
Tales of Vesperia - 24 GB
Tales of Berseria - 13 GB
NieR:Automata - 44 GB
Ace Combat 7 - 56 GB
Just Cause 3 - 51 GB
Sword Art Online: Fetal Bullet - 30 GB
Batman Arkham Knight - 53 GB
Star Ocean The Last Hope - 51 GB
Star Wars The Old Republic - 45 GB
Control - 42 GB
Shadow of the Tomb Raider - 32 GB

And 10 more games that are above 30GB. With 30 games 20GB or less. I will stop the list here as you get the idea. The total all games take is 3.2 TB. Oh also.

Supernatural - 548 GB
LOST - 180 GB
Everybody Loves Raymond - 177 GB
Person of Interest - 174 GB
Bull - 151 GB
Farscape - 135 GB

And many many many more shows 130 GB and less. I have about $15,000 in iTunes content since they started even offering Movies and TV shows. So I have A LOT downloaded.

So yes, I need to make use out of the 8TB. I also have a 30TB NAS that I need. 20 TB for youtube files that I create (recording lets plays, tutorials, and more).

So tell me again, that I do not need the space I need please. I can't put ANY of this on my work computer. Visual Studio COMPLETE install for my work (we don't do C++ and mobile so that space is not needed) - 9 GB.

WOW!!!! 9 GB for Visual Studio and 11 GB for our code repository, I absolutely CANNOT get that in 256GB of space! NO WAY!!!!.

I don't have a problem with 256GB being the base drive size on a low-end consumer machine but I hope they start at 512GB on the beefier "Pro" iMacs. Also, 16GB RAM should be the minimum on higher end machines with 32/64 as options. Particularly with these new iMacs probably being non upgradable.

I believe the 27"/30" whatever size they decide will be the next gen iMac Pro. This will help - iMacs are 24" and iMac Pro are 27/30. And the 2017 iMac Pro started at 1TB of storage.

Ok, I can write a list of random games and TV shows as well. You don't NEED 8TB, you WANTED to install that particular amount of storage for convenience. Like you said you have all these external devices you could have stuck 256GB on your PC and then copied and moved stuff between the drives frequently.

All that post demonstrates is that if you purchased one 256GB iMac for all those uses you listed your Supernatural at 548GB is more than double the storage already. Goes to show you could not live with a single 256GB Mac for your personal usage excluding work. Hence at least 1TB SSD should be the standard across the board on all Macs. Heck I just stated 1TB as a general remark. If you want to get serious at least 2TB should be the standard sizing in 2021. Should have been the standard years ago.

You could store more and reduce the frequency that you need to move things to external drives lessening the read/write cycles on the SSD increasing its longevity.
