Some takes:

  • If it has a fan, I can guarantee that you will need some kind of filter at the bottom, to minimize the amount of dust gathered, since it will be a nightmare to open it in order to properly dust it off. Ask Mac Studio owners.
That’s basically true of anything that has a fan, not a big deal
  • 256GB of storage is an insult and even borderline criminal abuse of their customers. Their "storage upgrades" prices are a slap on the face to their loyal customers and a reminder that they have us by the short ones.
Eh, it’s a desktop, if you really need a lot of bulk storage an external is not the end of the world
  • Headphone jack up front benefits only the people that constantly plug/unplug headphones, in a place like an agile office. The rest will treat this as a proper desktop computer, hence the jack should be at the back.
Most people plug this into a display and use the sound out that way, for everyone else (including me) it’s not exactly an issue to toss a USBC DAC on the back, Apple’s are pretty decent but there’s tons of others on amazon
  • Can run Linux easily.
I would expect Asahi will support the M4 shortly FWIW

I get your complaints but they’re mostly either nitpicking or easy fixes

because Jony Ive doesn't work at Apple any more - now the guys from Cupertino can be less ideology and more pragmatic driven.
but this is still a rehash of Jony's design :)

They're still ideologically driven with opting for smaller instead of more selection of ports. It's a desktop computer, it doesn't need to be this small, and one USB-A port won't hurt anyone.

USBA is (finally) dying, and adapters are cheap, removing USBA makes sense. Apple’s actually been less aggressive on this than, say, they did with legacy ports when they started using USBA.

And they added the front ports, which is a welcome update. No more need to buy, say, a satechi base just to get nice looking front ports :)

por que no los dos? remember Power Macs used to have a line out jack in the back and a headphone jack in the front? 😃

I would still opt for a PC if Linux compatibility is important because x86 PCs have more production quality Linux distributions to choose from.

Most people dont upgrade their computers every generation, this is targeted at the last gen intel and first M1 mini users, not the M2 folks. My wife has an M2 mini, she has no reason to upgrade yet
I have a 2018 mini and don't want to part with it because it's Intel based and I know I can run Linux on it when Apple decides to cut it off.

yes but was the base storage upgraded to 512 instead of the ridiculous 256??
No of course not. There's no way Apple would price it at $599 for the base model if they did.

Apple's prices to upgrade the internal storage are outrageous, but I'm happy to only pay $599 and get 256gb. 256gb is still a huge amount of space for the main system drive. Cheap external storage is ok for everything beyond that. I don't see much difference between 256gb and 512gb because 512gb isn't big enough for everything anyway, so I'm going to need external storage either way... and then might as well go for 1 or 2 TB.

Some people would want it in the back, some in the front. Everyone can't be happy. I'm assuming most people use the headphone jack for "headphones" – and then you probably want it in the front. I totally get why they went for that option. (But I've no problem seeing why someone might prefer it in the back.)

Another argument is that there isn't really much room in the back. 🤷🏻‍♂️
My current 2018 Mac Mini setup has speakers attached to the headphone jack because I was having audio drops over TB to Monitor Audio Out to Speakers. Could easily have same problem with new Mini and same monitor.

  • Power button at the bottom is not that bad actually.

I know that many of us would never consider a PC, but for the ones that do see these things as tools and hate being taken advantage off thanks to our loyalty, consider the following:

  • Mini PC's comes with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB NVME's for around US$700, with a copy of Winblows.
  • Many are expandable with external GPUs.
  • RAM and storage is expandable and user replaceable.
  • Can run Linux easily.
  • Easy to open and clean.

If Apple didnt r*aped us with the criminal overpriced upgrades, this Mac Mini like others systems, would be simply perfect, but I don't know, Apple keeps making things more difficult than they needs to be.
You forgot to add that almost all desktop "Winblows" PC's come with an audio jack on the front so not sure what your "proper desktop computer" actually is.

I'd like to have words with the specific person at Apple who signs off on that level of gouging
His name is Tim Cooks and his motto is "Don't be poor".
but none of those mini PCs have M4 and M4 Pro level chips.
Until we get real performance reviews, you are simply mislead by the marketing team.
They also have worse performance while consuming more power
Not true and we are talking about a desktop, not a laptop. Funny how the power consumption thing becomes important when it fits a narrative.
and probably have loud fans and worst of all -- external power bricks!
Also false and to some people, an external power brick means easy replacement in case of failure.
Again, this is a desktop computer, not a laptop and funny enough, all laptops comes with a external brick.
That’s basically true of anything that has a fan, not a big deal
Sorry my friend, but selective reading is not cool. I clearly stated the internal dust issue, not the fan.
Eh, it’s a desktop, if you really need a lot of bulk storage an external is not the end of the world
See the other comments in this thread where others did this and still ended with the internal drive full.

Another example of selective reading.

Its a miracle that they got so far in spite of Apple, since Apple doesnt help them at all.
So its not really running at the hardware's full potential, unlike Linux on a x64 PC.
I get your complaints but they’re mostly either nitpicking or easy fixes
Sorry my friend and do not take this as an insult, but customers like you are the reason why Apple gets away with murder.

I simply provided some points, yet you felt like it was some kind of personal attack.

Apple neither any other company, have their best interest for you, only their bottom line.

What's the use case for 10gbe? I'm curious, not trying to be smart. :D
I have my home wired for 10gbe and have a homelab and NAS in my garage, along with redundant 10gbe links from my garage to my office, having my machines in my office able to access my garage fast is nice and buying another 10gbe thunderbolt NIC is about the same price as just upgrading the internal port

Yeah but even just regular desktop speakers, now you have a wire coming out of the front.
Agreed. If it bothers you, buy a USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapter and plug in the back. So simple.

Easy there friend, you will give Tim a heart attack by mentioning such things. :-D

My part was clear and I simply stated a more common usage of a desktop computer.

90% of desktop computers that I have worked on, has external speakers.

But the same percentage can be used in Agile offices, which will then be headphones.

Pick your poison.

I own Apple stock and usually buy the maxed out version of Apple computers, phones, AppleTVs, and iPads. But I’m retired now and for home use I really just need the lower end version of the mini which would more than suit my needs for years to come. But it is interesting that with this mini you can go from basic to high end workstation In the same form factor.
