i thought safari reader was going to be an rss reader, something to replace google reader/netnewswire etc..

how are people using it now? the only rss i can seem to pull up is when i see 'rss' in the title bar, but that only lets me view rss for that one site

The particular webpage must support the reader function. Just check out this webpage for example: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/08/us/08spill.html?ref=global-home. You'll see that a button appears on the right side of the address bar that enables the viewer. It's actually quite awesome.

Safari 5 vs. Chrome 5

That tool is a complete piece of crap. It still says I don't have MP3 codec support yet I have been using the HTML5 audio tag with a MP3 file for a script I have been building all day and it plays just fine.

Extensions. Extensions. AdBlock, and Gmail notifier and I'll switching back from Chrome.

Now if only I could get Zotero and Optimise Google on Chrome/Safari. Guess I'll just have to stick with Firefox and hope 4.0 turns out great.

It's not just yours. I see it. And it seems like Top Sites is loading faster, which might actually make it become useful. I NEVER used it before...

I have used it since the beginning, but i hope they fixed the problem where is would go crazy and show chunks of what i had been doing for the last hour before showing me my top sites. I also might search me history more since it has been moved to the top of the top sites window

Damn, tabs still on bottom... I want my tabs on top!

In Safari 4 there was a command that you could use to put the tabs back on top. Unfortunately, I can't remember the command or know whether it still works with 5.

No new feature.

Just downloaded it using the Mac Software Update. Seems a little quicker than the old one. Looks to be a progression bar in the URL address area as you load a page.

Is that a new feature?
No, even Safari 1.0 under Mac OS X 10.2.8 had it. This was in 2002/2003, iirc.

The "fat" progressbar is intuitive, and is something which belongs into a matured product. The progress indicator in Safari 4 looked like from the Windows world.

However, Safari has some serious memory problems (500+ MB memory usage, with just a few open tabs, all plugins & Java disabled). Firefox 3.6.3 + NoScript and AdBlock Plus are much faster & better than Safari.

Reader is a different feature than the RSS reader mode. The new Reader extracts the main content from the webpage, usually an article, and displays it in a scrollable overlay, shading out the rest of the page. Actually, a very nice feature.

See an example on this page:

I'm still using Leopard. Does anybody know if there are missing features vs those on Snow Leopard?

Anyone know how to fix the slowness? It's unbearable. It's not my download speed as downloading stuff is just as fast as usual. It seems to be the javascript engine.

The Reader is awesome, but until I can get Wikipedia search, I'm sticking with Chrome.

Mine is perfectly fast after the initial load of a web page. You may just be recaching everything for the first time.

Extensions might be intel only. The preference pane isn't there.

BTW, PPC + 1Password users: 1Password is NOT broken.

seems stable enough here. i am glad that the blue loading bar is back. so much better than the little 'loading' box. can't wait for some extensions to come out and see how they are.

reader is alright, nice for when you want to focus on something.

the only other improvement that they could make that i miss from Chrome is that the address bar also serves as a search bar there, would be sweet not to have to go over to the specific search bar. but at least we have one more option of search now. perhaps, depending on the power of extensions, we'll get more options there.
