Bump. I also cannot get links to open in a new tab in a current window. What setting am I not properly changing or enabling?
Nope, this isn't working for me either, it downloads a file without extension to my folder. Open in a new window seems fine.
Am I the only one who's having trouble with
"Open links in a new tab in the current window"?
The link that I quoted always opens a new window, but my settings are set to "open in a new tab in the current window". Is this a bug that I should report? Or am I being dumb?

ok...fix list for version 4 out of beta

1) Make tabs location a preference (top or old style)
2) allow bookmarks button to be separate and hidden
3) move refresh/stop back to toolbar option and out of the address window
4) allow toggle for cover view/list view (like itunes)
5) add feature for multiple home pages (ie..mobileme on one, news on another when launching safari)
-or- allow top sites to be the home page (can this be done already?)
6) add feature to use other search sites for those who want to use something other than google
7) add separator when viewing multiple tabs from the stoplight buttons in top left (see add tab area in top right as example)

Now for praise

Top sites - very cool feature
Search functions will be useful
Zoom - kinda cool; would be better if it zoomed into the area of the site I want to enlarge (maybe it does, I just can't get it to work)

For a beta looks real nice..I love safari and use it exclusively, however, they need to leave some old customizations in the preferences and add a few new features and it will be damn near perfect.

Is it just me or is Safari4 "not" faster than the one i just updated from?

I dont like the interface. But it might just be that it takes a little getting used to.

Oh well, we have to live with it now or just never upgrade. They should at least let us adjust the appearance.

Opening a new tab for me takes about half a second - Slow! Whereas Safari 3 opened a new tab almost immediately. Plus, I had to get rid of all my plugins in order for Safari 4 to stop crashing. SafariStand crashed Safari if three tabs were opened and also randomly when I clicked on a link.

I really want to make Safari 4 my main browser, but it is unusable to me; time to downgrade.

cmd-t

cmd-w as many times as necessary
cmd-shift-left or cmd-shift-right to get to whatever tab you want to start at if you want to keep the current one open

Agreed, that's annoying. I'm debating between switching back to the old tab style and leaving it as is; the only thing keeping me from switching back is the fact that it does look sleeker with the smaller amount of space taken up by the taskbar at the top.

You really think that I don't know about keyboard shortcuts? Besides that doesn't fix my gripe.

Had you bothered reading through this thread you would've discovered that all those things are possible... just a little digging, that's all!!

You could have just as easily restored the tabs to the previous position, as described several times in this thread.

Thanks, VSMacOne & GGJstudios... there are way too many posts in this thread... took a while to find the code to do it--- but I'm ready to give it another try.

cheers!

Best thing about it for me by far. Web Devs can now test IE6 for windows from within Safari! Overall the dev tools are simply stunning.

Out of interest, what is that you're using? I do some web design, and that would be incredibly useful.

Is it through some expensive ADC membership, or is it something more freely available?

Cheers.

i love chrome on my work PC so this is great for me. my favorite feature is if you open a new window, you can drag the tab into your other safari window and add it to the rest of your tabs.

i was having a lot of trouble with safari 3 beachballing and having to reset every week or so, i hope this takes care of it.

Safari > Preferences > Advanced > check "Show Develop menu in menu bar"

I was just ready to switch my browsing from safari to firefox because I keep getting random hang-ups in safari like every 10 minutes when I'm browsing, occasionally crashing the browser. First thing I read about when I open firefox up is safari 4 beta available, so I downloaded & installed. So far no hangups and everything seems to load a lot snappier. you win this round apple.

Wow.
The new tab design is horrible.

Breaking up the top of the window into tabs destroys the cohesiveness of the entire interface. If you have multiple windows open, it starts to look like a drawer of hanging folders and it becomes difficult to tell which tabs belong to which windows. This is something you would expect from Microsoft not Apple.

I can really notice a difference with Safari 4 on my Powerbook G4. Youtube and other hog sites now load MUCH faster. Plus I absolutely love the Top Sites, extremely useful for me and the eye candy is just gorgeous. My only gripe is tabs on the top of the bar, but perhaps that's just something to get used to.

Loading Bar?

My only gripe with the new safari is that there is no loading bar of any kind. I really like having something that shows me how close the page is to being done loading instead of a little rotating circle. Hopefully they include this in the final version. Other than that, nice job Apple.

The blue progress bar hack has 2 serious drawbacks, I just tried it....

#1: You lose the STOP/RELOAD functionality completely.
#2: Safari 4.0 seems to be running slower now too.

So, end of that experiment.

no it doesn't. you can put the button on the left of the address bar, just like in Safari 3.... and it's running slower because of visual tweaks?!? I find that hard to believe, since a LOT of people have switched to that...

Not sure if I'm digging the font they used for the titlebar, looks too Windows-like to me, feels a bit out of place.

I found a way to toggle items 1-4 of your list using Safari menu.

Hope this helps.

My main concern was the fact that JavaScript is not allowed to open new windows anymore. Only new tabs. The site I work with as part of my job relies on opening new windows. So I started diggin' Safari internals and found those options. :D

Good find! Works like a charm, but I'm keeping mine just like it is :) I like it.
But it's good to know we can tweak it so easily!!
