Or, re-reading it makes me think that Firewire is required only for G3, anyone can clarify?

I'm writing this from Safari 4 on an old 300 mhz Wallsteet Powerbook G3. Which doesn't even have USB let alone firewire.

It runs just fine. Heck, Tiger which also supposedly requires built-in FW runs just fine (under xpostfacto)

Does anyone have problems copying and pasting text from Safari 4 Beta? I have tried to copy a few things and paste them in an email and it pastes some old stuff I copied. If I paste in the browser itself (like search field) then what I copied does paste. It seems to be a problem between safari and other apps.

Works perfectly. Be aware that due to Java scripting, some web pages may block copy functions. That's not your browser; that's the way the page is designed. I run into that a lot when updating lyrics. I don't understand why anyone would post lyrics, but not allow them to be copied. Anyway, I just exclude such sites from my lyrics searches now.

Well after the dust has settled and lots of testing I'm really enjoying the performance boost in Safari 4. It's faster than the last WebKit nightly builds I was testing too, without the annoying Javascript bugs that had crept into them. Memory leakage has vastly improved too from Safari 3, but this is also true of the WebKit nightlys.

However, after giving it a fair go, I've concluded the UI changes are mostly a fail. I've now tweaked various things and have it running more like the Safari 3 UI (it's great that this is possible to do - it'll be a big problem if in the final release Apple remove the hidden preferences).

As usual, Gruber gives a good analysis of the UI hits and misses.

Make sure you give feedback to Apple on everything you like and dislike :)

hard drive access

Does anyone else think this thing accesses the HD a bit too much. Every time I make a change to a web page, I hear that HD accessing. It doesn't do this at all with FF.

Safari 4

I've been using 4 for the past week and have seen no bugs. 3 was very stable for me and I was hesitant to switch early but I've seen slight improvements on speed and the other stated goodies add a little something. Overall, hoever, much the same as 3.

I just realized that Safari 4 BETA is the ONLY browser in the world to be able to get 100/100 for ACID3 test..

Firefox 3.0.6 : 71/100
Chrome: 79/100
Opera 9.64: 85/100

This is kind of a BIG deal since Safari 4 also happens to be the FASTEST browser out there... :)

Oh, that. Hold down the control key on your keyboard and scroll with your mouse wheel. Introduced in OS X 10.4.7, if I remember correctly.
Not the same thing. Control-Scroll will zoom the whole screen. What this does is increase the size of the contents of the browser window without increasing the size of everything else on the computer screen. Looks the same as hitting the "+" button in Preview.

Not that big of a deal to be honest and it is not the only browser:

Opera 10

You're comparing a Beta browser to release browsers. Firefox 3.1 and Opera's latest Beta also get 100/100 on Acid3.

The race is to see which one will be released first.

.... and at some point, all browsers will get 100/100, and this arbitrary ranking will be as meaningless as it is now. It won't matter who got there first. All that matters is how well a browser works for the user. Because different users have different needs, there's a place for all browsers.

Internet Explorer 8 still isn't even close, unfortunately. We'll probably have to wait for IE 9... Microsoft : keeping the web from evolving since 1995.

Run Software Update from the Apple Menu and follow the directions.

MBP running much hotter after installing 4.0

Hi,

I scrolled through many many of the responses to this thread, but didn't see anyone with a similar response. my mbp (15" - not unibody) runs much hotter now.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there an easy workaround other than reinstalling 3.0? Other than the heat / constant fan noise, i like 4.0.

cheers.

Anyone get hotmail working?

There is a workaround.

Go to Hotmail, don't log in yet. Then in the develop menu (if it's not there check it on in the preferences/advanced) go to User Agent and instead of Automatic select Firefox for Mac.

Log in. That's it.

You have to repeat this everytime you want to log in though.

Dunno if it's just me (and I don't want to search through all 55 pages to find this out) but tab-switching is buggy.

Sometimes when I click a tab it won't switch over, and when I click it again it minimizes Safari 4. I've tried to replicate this, and it usually seems as if I hover my mouse over the tab and wait a bit to click it will switch over, but if I'm casually clicking over it won't.

Anybody notice this too?

After a week or so of using Safari 4 beta, I can't say I've really taken advantage of many of the new features. The top sites is my new home page for when I open a new tab but I tend to use my bookmarks to find where I want to go. I moved the tabs back below the address bar, added the blue progress indicator to the address bar. If its faster, I'm glad, but I never complained about Safari being slow before.
