I'm giving it a shot but so far I don't like it. I want to change the "speed dial" like links on the top pages system but it won't let me since it makes it up as i go.

You didn't try very hard. There's an Edit button at the bottom left. You can re-arrange the sites in Top Sites. You can pin them so they don't disappear. You can drag a url icon from a separate browser window onto Top Sites to put whatever sites you want on that window.

I just noticed this on the download page! Does this mean new unibody Macbooks can't use Safari 4 beta?

Edit: Or, re-reading it makes me think that Firewire is required only for G3, anyone can clarify?

Uh, can't comment about the G3 but I'm running Safari 4 Beta on my unibody and works like a charm, except for a few odd bugs - but its a Beta.

By who? I've never heard this before, I found 2004 is terrible.

Mine Minimizes just fine with double click actually I've yet to have any issues at all with Safari 4.

Well, by me I guess. I always thought it was highly regarded. I must be mistaken.

edit: just looking around the web (I'm not trying to say that this means truth, but you just asked whot thought of Office 2004 4 this way - just a snippet):

"Mac Office has been a fantastic product since Office 98. Each iteration has been better and better and from what I've seen 2004 will be a nice polish. But as someone who switches back and forth from Office Mac to Office for Windows all day long, I totally agree with the bashing of the windows product. "

" Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac is clearly superior to its PC counterpart for most users. Last fall Microsoft put out a bloated update of Office for Windows that focused more on collaborating with other users than on making it easier for you to get your own work done. The streamlined Office for Mac puts individuals first."

"As a user of Office 2003 for Windows, it was hard not to sit through the demo given byJessica Somer, the product manager for Office ‘04, without cringing with jealousy over what is clearly the slickest impelmentation of Office that I’ve ever seen."

"Only on a Mac? Pity!"

"I run Office 2004 for Mac and Office 2000 (jeez, I hate Office 2003: bloatware!) in my XP partition in Parallels on the same machine."

"Now that Office 2004 is coming out for Mac, it just makes Windows users feel that they might as well switch to Mac to enjoy the better version than the crappy one we have now"

Again, by who? Just you? I've used both and felt that both were very usable and effective, although 2003 overall had a larger feature set.

Look at his post above. When Office 2004 for Mac came out, it was almost universally seen as superior to Office 2003 for Windows, and I believe it had features the Windows version didn't even have.

OK I have had for around 14 - 15 hours and I am annoyed that I cannot change the order of Tabs as when I try to move them all I do is move the window for Safari :(

I'm using Opera to post this as it is my primary browser. I like how Opera saves back traking info on all tabs so if i reopen one i can go back to the previous page or further if I want but safari only lets me reopen the last page... If Opera had multi-touch support I wouldn't even try this new safari.

You can edit your top sites...

Click the upper right, where those little lines are. That allows you to move the individual tabs.

You have to drag them from the edge of the tabs like when you resize your web browser.

I have to say, I REALLY like it. I became frustrated with Safari a while ago and switched over to using FireFox almost exclusively - but Safari 4 may just win me back!

The page rendering is lightening quick on all my Macs (which range from a lowly G4 mini right up to a first-generation MacBook) and is a massive improvement on previous versions.

It also improves relations with Outlook Web Access (which I use for work). I could never send messages with older versions of Safari, only read them - which was a big part of me moving over to Firefox - but v4 seems to have rectified this curious issue.

As has been previously mentioned, it bears more than a passing resemblance to Google Chrome but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The implementation of the 'top sites' feature is nicely done, and typically Apple. I immediately liked the new tabs/title bar arrangement too - it may be somewhat Windows-esque, but it saves a little bit of screen real-estate so I really don't mind.

It's shaping up well. I'm also testing out the Windows version thanks to Boot Camp, and I think making it 'blend' more with the UI was the right thing to do. Apple are clearly pushing Safari as a platform, and the better it fits into that world, the more uptake there'll hopefully be from Windows-based iPhone users.

tabbed browsing

it doesn't seem to me there is a setting for true tabbed browsing, where it automatically goes to a new when you click on a bookmark. you have to hit the option key and then click. true tabbed browsing, which i think opera was first to have, just let you click on a bookmark or url and go to a new tab.

Command-click on any bookmark opens that link in a new tab.

if updated, there is a 3rd party addon called safaristand,

Where is the setting in SafariStand that sets up tabbed browsing, as described? I can't find it.

oh boy, it was so long ago, my memory is vague, its a checkbox that stated something like "force target opened in a new tab." somewhere in the settings.

I do not have my mac with me now, so wait and see if anybody else can help you check it out.

Found it... I think! I've had it checked so long, I didn't remember.

I think I discovered something new. Not sure though. If it is not a new feature, then forgive me. But, I don't think i saw this in Safari 3.x.

If you have more than 12 tabs, a new button will appear (next to the "plus tab" button) that will allow to see all the extra tabs.

Here's what it looks like:

It's located on the top right of the window.

it was different in Safari 3.x. I believe it was an arrow or something, and the tabs slid, but I don't remember exactly. It was similar, but i think this works better than what i remember.
