While there are plenty of Apple customers who are capable of, for example, replacing the display on their iPhone, I also foresee quite a number of people who think they are and end up doing more damage to the phone by trying repairs themselves.
But we can take those official parts and get our friendly repair shop to do the hard work. This is great.

I’m sure the planet wouldnt damage chucking a phone away, it just makes people feel self gaining, in the real world it doesn’t make any difference
I am not sure I agree.

If I can use a phone (and others do) for longer, less are needed to be manufactured. Those older phones are also not thrown away.

Net gain is less eco waste.

I respect your views but I honestly don’t buy it, phones are still gonna be made no matter what I do with mine etc, and eco waste in my honest view isn’t a thing; it doesn’t damage the planet or world in any way, but I respect your views

I have been saying this is what Apple will do for a while. I wonder how the folks at iFixit are taking this news.

Good. Even if The launch is far from perfect this is good. It is a step in the right direction. I've done numerous repairs on macs for years all without good manuals and sometimes proper tools. This is awesome.

How will that help the environment lol

A couple of ways, @Kylo83

1) Apple: "Following the repair, customers who return their used part for recycling will receive credit toward their purchase." – more reuse & recycling is always a good thing for the finite resources on our planet

2) Fewer individual journeys to Apple stores/authorised service centres (to take items in for repair, to collect repaired items) meaning less emissions – from predominantly fossil-fuel based vehicles – going into our planet's atmosphere. The sending of parts direct to customers likely has a lower carbon footprint, as multiple small parcels can be distributed by a single delivery truck, for example.

lol

Respectfully I too disagree.

Where would be the $$ in Apple, or others producing phones that people don't buy?

Eco waste is a thing. I personally don't want lead, or other plastics, VOC, and carcinogens in my water or food being leached from discarded electronic devices. But that is my opinion.

I couldn't believe what I am seeing...

What if the customer tried to repair himself and broke something along the way? Will it avoid the warranty?

Prolly a combination of shock and excitement. This has long been their mission so they can see this as a step in that direction. But it's different. The heart of ifixit will still be their guidance which will compliment a manual. The repair manual won't replace them.
