At least they have a release date for the air unlike the new mini. Looks like supplies will be scarce, hence the pre-order date and release date are on the same day like the 5S. Best thing is they have the "in store pickup option" on 11/1/13. It says on apples app store

Air can't be the biggest thing for the iPad family. It sounds like a bigger iPad is on its way...

So.. iPad Air got better dimensions and weight, and that's about it. Same processor as a phone. It may be a great processor, but iPad pushes a lot more pixels. Will it even be as fast?

Better wifi is pointless. It's wifi was already faster than the internet pipe, the limiting factor. No better camera. Same crippling base storage size. No fingerprint sensor. Probably same RAM (have to wait for a tear down).

Pretty incremental upgrade overall. Hardly impressive.

Higher clock speed than iPhone bc of higher thermal limits - significantly faster. Same story as before with iPhone 5 and iPad 4.

Better wifi isn't pointless. For one, maybe its faster than YOUR pipe, but not everyone's. There are several places around the country that offer gig internet at affordable rates. Additionally, home networking can operate significantly faster with MIMO.

Just because its not necessarily better for YOU doesn't mean its not objectively better.

$400 for the iPad Mini? No Touch ID? No multi-user accounts? Hello Nexus 7.

This guy right here.. lol.. No touch ID. I don't know if you have a 5s but the touch ID is not at all a deal breaker for me and to move from an iPad to a Nexus is going backwards. How about I trade my Audi in for a toyota camry. Nothing wrong with the camry but kinda going backwards in my opinion. Multi-user would be nice but thats a software update not a hardware update.

There are two reasons they changed the name.
1) They will introduce a bigger iPad at some point.
2) They now are creating a lot of buzz. Instead of people going 'oh is that the new iPad?' They will know it is the new iPad because it now has a new name!!! People will be all 'you see that new iPad Air??'. Much more interesting than just 'hey did you see the new iPad 5th generation' lol.

iPad Pro @ WWDC 2014

Why add a sub brand? Because Apple is going to start introducing different categories of iPad like the Mac line. The Air is the consumer brand.

iPad Pro will be announced at WWDC next year with a laptop grade processor with professional apps announced alongside (i.e. Aperture for iOS with stylus support). Touch ID and probably a bigger 12" screen.

so no IGZO on either display?

i am surprised that there is no touch-id. i think jobs would have insisted (and ultimately would have won) to have it in the ipad air. maybe not mini, but definitely air. yes, poor yield, etc, etc, but he would have made them make more faster.

this "we have the technology, but we are going to hold off on it because it is going to make us richer" is getting rather transparent and kinda keeping apple appear to be behind the curve.

Simple marketing yet people just can't understand it.

Remember when the iPad was called the "New iPad"

The amount of people complaining about "no A7X" chip in here is absolutely hilarious and worrying.

You realise the chip doesn't exist? And even if it did, it would just be a name? Apple created the X chip to power the larger screen, they obviously don't need to now. The fact that people are complaining about a name for a chip that doesn't even exist is just incredible.

Apple could have called it the A7X, made exactly the same device, and these same people would be happy - ridiculous when you think about it. These people are morons.

Also complaining about the base size? Sorry what happened to options for people? Ive never needed to own a model bigger than 16gb, so its just fine for me thanks, you do have every option up to 128gb if you want more though. Its amazing people complain Apple doesn't give choices and then when they do, tell them its wrong and they should get rid of the choices.

Yep its only a minor update to fit all that extra power into a body nearly half the size of last years model...just minor engineering that haha.

My reactions...

1. Name change to iPad Air is pretty stupid.

2. Glad the mini now has a retina screen.

3. The iPad Air upgrade is pretty minimal.

A feature exactly nobody was clamoring for a few months ago is suddenly a deal breaker?

We knew it wouldn't have this - mainly because of the supply chain issues. They can't even make enough iPhones with it on, never mind two versions of the iPad as well. If they could get enough made to satisfy demand, it'd be there - in the mean time, no other device, including the Nexus 7-2, will have one either.
